  • Once again, here's another re-upload of a video that's already been on this channel- but with improved audio quality. Chopin's Etude, Op. 25, nº8, arguably the hardest of all of Chopin's etudes to play (at least at this speed!)

    Imagine playing Revolutionary Etude in octaves, this and Op.10 No 2 as encore in a concert.

    As we all know speed doesn't tell us anything about the quality of music. This video is the perfect prove!

      ......it's just as fast, and I absolutely love it.

      @mitom80 I'm a retired PhD in music. I played for 30 years in an American philharmonic. I make and own some of the finest musical instruments in the world. Your statement is partially correct. I LOVE, love, love, the first half (grammar aside). We should almost ALWAYS be looking for QUALITY music. Pop is poison, a dress made out of meat, costumes, pretty hair is NOT even music at all. Showmanship is not quality music. Bravo. BUT, this was not intended to be a heart-felt performance or an authentic recreation. Even originally it is doubtful that Chopin intended it to put children to sleep. Like with a typist or video gamer, this is a speed run. Not pretty, not fun. Get out your stopwatch and a clicker to count the mistakes. Your have a bit more to learn about musicians and I hope you keep looking for QUALITY in your music. But we all have our own practice drills, scales and arpeggios to keep us in top form. This video proves Antonio is in the top 1%. It's AMAZING.

      @@TheUprightLuthier-1959 Thanks for speaking up for me! Although I don't agree that ALL pop music is trash, I stand to uphold the best renditions of great music, whether classical or not; and if possible, to help those who are among the very greatest classical performers, but don't have a voice in today's half-fake world.

    I would say the hardest etude is the G# minor. Horowitz considered the first one in C major the most difficult to play. He's on film saying it. It's a documentary all about him

    • @extremepianochannel
      @extremepianochannel  3 года назад

      Oh, it's not the hardest....... I even find it strange that he would say that....... for me the hardest Chopin etudes are, in order of difficulty:
      Op.10,#2
      Op.25,#6
      Op.25,#12
      Op.25,#10
      Op.25,#8 (if played at 90+ bpm)

    I've been learning this etude lately and was thinking it's not so bad, until I tried to approach Chopin's metronome marking (69). Even at 60, the left hand alone feels unmanageable. I was suspecting it's downright impossible and maybe Chopin's metronome must've been off, but then I checked with Cziffra and was proven wrong. And now this.... I find the first 2 rises (at ~3sec and ~9sec in this video) so impossibly hard for my left hand, especially the thumb has to hit consecutive notes so quickly and travel quite a distance. I wonder if those were the hard parts for you too? Subscribed!

    • @Chopin-Etudes-Cosplay
      @Chopin-Etudes-Cosplay 2 года назад

      btw practicing this gets fatiguing on the left shoulder too (so much back-and-forth)!

    • @extremepianochannel
      @extremepianochannel  2 года назад

      I don't know what Chopin's tempo marking for this etude was (if he provided any at all); but in any case, it almost certainly would have been nowhere near this tempo........

    I wonder how far can you span your hands on the keyboard.

    • @extremepianochannel
      @extremepianochannel  4 года назад +6

      I can span most tenths, but the only kinds of tenths I can easily take in are minor tenths on keys of different color. I have great difficulty playing tenths on white keys, and cannot span major tenths on keys of different color, except D-F# in the left hand and F#-A# in both hands.

      I loathe Liszt's version of it. Busoni's reworking of it is really cool, though. I might even play it in the future. I find the Liszt version to be anaemic and overly pompous at the end.... kind of like a deformed morphing porcelain doll, initially pitiful, then suddenly grotesque.

      As far as I know, it was not Liszt, but Henselt, who played the black key etude adding some octaves, but NOT ENTIRELY in octaves. I don't know exactly where he added them.
