The "anthems" in Rollerball were written for the movie by distinguished composer Andre Previn, and played by the famous classical organist Simon Preston. So these pieces of music are really something! You don't get that quality of music in movies, these days ...
I remember seeing this with my dad. Frightening but cool at the same time. I told my friends about this and we re-enacted the sport scenes in our bikes. We made gauntlets from large juice cans and duct tape. Crazy times in the 1970s.
Whenever I hear this melancholic music and see the unspoken silent thoughts of the participants in this frozen in time moment I feel just one thing which it conveys - ‘WE ARE FOOLS TO WAGE WAR ON OUR BROTHERS IN ARMS’ Whatever our ethnic differences. 😔 (Paul)
Contrast Blue and Moon Pie before their demise during this match, one solemn, deeply contemplative and the other cocky and dismissive of his opponents. Rollerball has a lot more substance than what most movie critics thought.
Possibly Moonpie was still relishing the spectacle & the violence of the 'game' .....Whereas Blue had moved beyond that stage & was beginning to realize that the 'game' was morally wrong & inside his head he was affected by this. (Paul)
@@walterevans2118 I got the impression Blue had an intuition this game was his end. He clearly had a lot going on inside his head during the corporate anthem.
Crazy thing is this was a futuristic movie that takes place in the late 2010s. They tried...but were way off with what reality ended up being like by then.

wish i could find sheet music for the tokyo corporate anthem
didn't know Previn wrote them - they are my favorite moments in the movie

Watched Rollerball again recently and never appreciated just what a beautiful piece of music this is,also very melancholic and sad

1:28 I love how Moonpie, when he notices a Japanese player staring at him, makes subtile gestures with his head like: "the F**k you looking at?"
Tokyo had the best anthem 😊

The best of the corporate anthems
Nice observation I was thinking the same thing
New York's was too funky for me.
absolutely - moving yet melancholic
best part of the whole film for me this song has me in tears, it's so moving
Move to Tokyo and you can keep crying all you like without the rest of us looking at you like a weirdo
I thought I was the only one - totally agree
An anthem that is moving to listen to! The corporate anthem for Energy is an actual tune, as well. "The Star Spangled Banner" is poetry set to music.
When the lecture about the Tokyo team is taking place Blue is the first one to mouth off!!! Same speech every year he should have listened!!
Love that TOKIO NATIONAL ANTHEM.
Corporate Anthem!
Tokyo Olympics 2021
I would love to get the sheet music for this
Beautiful anthem .
so much is said without a single word of dialogue during this scene..
They don't make them like this anymore
I like how in the end, they took the Kamakzee bow
The two Houston players they got a reaction from ended up dead (well, comatose and burned up) during the game.
Honestly, it was hard to watch the New York game without Moonpie(#9) and Blue(#1). That’s why we had a #11 there.
Foreshadowing of there downfall
Okay, so Tokyo made the playoffs, but how in hell did they get home field advantage!

Does anyone know what the music is or if it was written for the actual film?
That's the good question. For decades havr tried to figure it out, and still have no clue is it Previn's work or someone's else.
End credits?
Nothing on the end credits sadly.
It was written for the film by the same guy who did the others. However, it is based on the actual Japanese National Anthem.
Written by Andre Previn.
What are the Tokyo fans chanting at the end?
Tokyo hip hooray! Tokyo hip hooray!
@@anthonyR13That or "Tokyo! Victory!"
I think “Tokyo GANBARE”
(JAPANESE WORD. means “Cheers!”
Tokyo, Victory
That anthem sounds too gloomy
Fitting considering two Houston players died.
It pretty much summed up what was to come and the fact that the corporation’s sole motivation was to force retire Jonathan from the game……or kill him.
This music sucks, it sounds like funeral music 😂
It has a Japanese quality about it. I think it is moving and high quality.
