I thought they were so cool that I bought two about a month ago. Thanks for the instructionals. I intended to expose one to abuse and the elements and keep the other one untouched. You have changed my mind. I'm gonna pimp one!
Not to say most of us couldn't figure this stuff out on our own... But reassurance is always nice. Well done! The video was a nice pace--not too redundant, and flowed from topic to topic without becoming boring.
Regardless of whether you agree with the accessories added to this Shockwave, the explanation on how to add each item was excellent. Kudos to Hammer Striker.
Great tutorial. I appreciate the emphasis on safety - checking for empty before tear down, not loading it in the house before heading to the range, and the trigger issues with the scabbard. Those are small details, but people need to hear them all the damn time
01:30 - At OUR indoor shooting range, if you want to shoot anything "from the hip", you MUST have an attached laser...and the 12Ga Shockwave is definitely a gun you want to practice shooting before making it your dedicated home defense weapon. So this really is a very useful mod. Thanks for uploading
Im thinking about getting one and thought 20 ga would be a better option for less recoil. But those mini shells look pretty cool too. Adds a lot to your capacity and light recoil. I would go with that but i have a crap load of 20ga ammo i have accumulated over the years since my home defense gun has always been a 20ga.
For those interested, Talon now has grip wraps custom fit for the Shockwave. No more trying to cut/wrap from a large blank piece, they're a perfect fit. Around $17. Check out their website. I found mine on eBay- free shipping
I wish they had made the custom fit version for this gun when I first got it. When this one wears out, it will be replaced with the custom fit version.
Hockey stick tape works extremely well to wrap the grips and give good grip . As well you can get a pellet gun laser that you can mount on the rail that had a pressure switch you can mount to the grips and run the hockey tape over works very well . Also highly recommend running the mini shells they recently came out with some of the pdx flat disc with shot ones grabed some at the last gun show and they worked out amazing during the range test .
Nice video, thanks for sharing. I went the way of the Tru-Point (TruGlo) Laser/Light combo because of the flashlight which I have to tell you is incredible and makes the shockwave a great defensive weapon in dark tight areas. Really happy with this gun..........................
I actually caught your video 2 months after purchasing my SHOCKWAVE. I like your video because you consolidate many upgrades that just make good sense. From that perspective you sure did help me and I thank you very much : )
I got an offset laser and reflex sight cause i knew the laser would prevent me from seeing the bead. I guess you could a high profile front sight too but if you get a high quality reflex that can keep zero with a sbs thats fine. I dont even use it though. This thing is meant to be fired from the hip, Ash.@nhrebels5849
That's a pretty sweet setup! I can't wait until these are legal in Texas (Sep 1st); I will absolutely be getting one, and may even use this video as inspiration for some of my own mods.
Affordable Armory they are legal to buy in TX right now but wait until September 1 to consider it for self defense. Until 9/1 you can use it as club to protect yourself -- but you can currently buy them, transport, and shoot them. I'm not a lawyer so take what I write as just a point of view from an owner of the Shockwave in TX.
I own a 12 gauge Shockwave , shoot mini shells out of it. Absolutely awesome and what a difference going from 2 3/4 shells to the 1 3/4 shells now I’m thinking the laser. Thanks for the video, great video 😁👍💯🇺🇸
Glad that I watched this video! I have the Shockwave, and never noticed that I could put a rail on it. I do have the OPSol Mini Clip, everyone should have one for the Shockwave. Also, great idea on the aluminum trigger group, I'll check into that. I have the same scabbard, it doesn't bother me that the trigger is exposed, I think it will work good.
~I did what you are doing, but I also added a steel safety switch with the short tang on top to aid in using the switch. I highly recommend you add one to your Shockwave if you haven't done so already.
I put mine on with out field trip it And the screws already had locked tight on them from factory. So that's what I used and I haven't had not one problem the rail was a Weaver mount $12 at sportsman's Warehouse.
Very informative video. Based on it I went out and purchased the Truglow Mico-Tac laser. Works great! I also added a Mesa Tactical Sureshell Shotshell Ammunition Carrier.
Well done, I haven't put the add on's on mine as of yet and my gun will look pretty much like yours when done, I did add a shell carrier to the left side, and you're right that Voodo sheath isn't going to work, I might end up adding enough leather to the top to cover the trigger up completely, the mini shell option is awesome, thanks for the review...
Took mine to the range, after firing it, went home and filled out the ATFE Form 1 to SBS the damn thing. Now when the tax stamp comes in I'll order the Butt Stock and try it again. Good video
Great job. 1st time viewer - new subscriber. :) They have this gun in 20 GA and 410 now. The 410 is all that I need for home defense or a truck gun, and the recoil is much, much less. Still plenty of firepower to take down a rabid animal regardless of how many legs they walk on. :) The laser is a must have for a gun that is shot from the hip 90% of the time. The mini shells are a good addition for home defense especially... More ammo loaded, less recoil, less over penetration at home defense ranges, and still effective. They had a reputation for jamming when they 1st came out, but it looks like the little adapter fixes that problem nicely. Again, great video - concise but thorough... going to check your other vids now.
Picked one up at local gun show last wknd so here I am. Got every mod you mentioned besides mini clip. Going to change the stick on grip I purchased because it’s not that good. Forgot about talon grips 🤦🏻♂️
When installing a rail you should torque from inside out so that it lays flat and is not bowed up due to squeezing it to the center. Kind of like torquing a cylinder head down, inside to outside.
My CCW instructor explained to my class people who can't shoot kill people. He said the time you take watching that little red dot move around is all the time it takes for the attacker to put a bullet in you. If I were you, I would ditch the laser, just point that thing and shoot. Good video and I enjoyed the details, but if it were mine, the laser would have to go.
FYI every wound I have ever cleaned got infected. Whether I used water, peroxide, or alcohol. However, every wound I never cleaned never got infected. Including a wound so bad I could see the tendons in my finger. A "Long term wound care nurse" echoed the same thing. She said with almost any wound, including bad wounds, the best thing to do is cover the wound with a bandage and do NOT touch it for 3 days. Let the body take care of itself... When we interfere we can screw things up. I was amazed at terrible wounds I got, how the body would expel dirt, grease, grains of sand and toxins when I just left it alone to heal.
Last point: Mount and sight your laser to the FRONT of the rail, not the rear, so you can also mount a light behind it. The advantages of being able to trigger the laser on a millionth of a second faster don’t come anywhere near the advantages of also having that light at your disposal.
I put a rail on my moss500. I never thought about cleaning the screw holes. My rail threaded fine but I can see where it may possibly be a problem. Good info brother.
What I did to make a firmer, softer grip is take my rubber Pachmayr finger groove slip-on off my CW45 and slipped it onto the Shockwave rear grip. Works great.
A clarification - dissimilar metals will exhibit galvanic corrosion and not galling. Galling is more of a mechanical reaction and is usually exhibited when a stainless steel nut and bolt are overtightened, or exposed to high temperature when threaded together.
I got the bare bones version thinking i could just get a heat shield but seems it's not the case sadly. Makes it look so cool, next best thing is an aimtech rail system or black aces tactical rail system, not exactly a heat shield but looks like it and looks cool
@@jordanfreeland8768 I know what you mean, but I was very fortunate. I ended paying $440 for it by going to fleet farm and adding my name to a list. 4 weeks later, they called me to pick it up.
On the scabard, my cousin in canine squad was crawling up on a bust with a safteied shotgun on a sling over his back and a stick from brush caught in his trigger and wounded his dog, which recovered ok, but agree with you a scabard that doesn't cover the trigger would be useless.
I also have the TRUGLO Micro Tac red microlasers and the OPSOL Mini Clip on my Shockwave, but I installed the CDS Tactical Products Rubber Grip Wrap for the Shockwave. I love my setup as I'm sure you love yours. I will soon be installing an extended Steel Safety Lever with the Lip and a S&J Type 3 DuPont Delrin Magazine Follower (the Best on the market). I have my Mossberg 590A1 setup the same way except it has the green Truglo Micro Tac and has no tape on it's Hogue shotgun stock and forearm. I Love my Mossbergs. The Darn Best Bang for your Dollars.
I have an extended steel Safety Switch from Brownells on both my Shockwave and 590A1. I've had neither bite me...yet. On the 590A1 I have the Lip forward towards the muzzle but on my Shockwave I have it back towards the grip. Those setups work great for me. I think you'll like your Shockwave setup the same way. Because the lip is what allows you to easily operate the switch, I think you can lightly file and edges that may continue to bite. Before you begin on the safety switch be sure the forend is all the way back. Plus, you will reuse the ball, spring and the detent plate. Also, be sure to change your safety switch over a towel because the detent ball and spring are easy to lose, because I know from experience. The plate will likely be stuck to the bottom of the stock switch.
I cut the bottom open, and the shotty slides in just enough to cover the trigger and can still be drawn from the back (if the off hand holds the bottom or you have it strapped very tight).
I tried the aluminum trigger housing but it was an entirely different shade than the shockwave. Really looked bad imho. Slapping on some wood furniture really makes it look good. The best thing I did was putting on mine was a RMR on a scalarworks mount. I can throw slugs and buck out to 50 yards without much issue. Much more effective than a laser which you're affected by lighting conditions and are always having to search for it. Put some wood furniture and a leather sling which made it look real nice. Currently trying out a side saddle. I'm on the fence about it since it adds quite a bit of bulk along with a bit of wonkiness to a gun that really isn't balanced all that well. The upside is that you do get several more rounds.
Great video. Thanks for the heads up on the voodoo tactical breacher scabbard. I also didn't know there was an aluminum option for the cheap plastic trigger group.
An OD scabbard came with my Shockwave: but was too tight and definitely will not handle a Sidesaddle. FWIW, GG&G modifies a Magpul MLOK forend to work on SW, like Rem Tac 14. I put short rail sections at 3 and 9 so I could mount a light/laser to rails. If under the stress of actual self defense situation, you will lose 50% of your fine motor skills and good luck with trying to get your hand under that rinky dink strap, would get you killed if you attempted to do so! Instead I installed a MagPul "handstop" at 6 to perform same function: but more more useful. There is one large and one small "hook" at each end of fore end. Aesthetically it looks better to have the big hook to rear, closest to receiver and smaller one at muzzle end: but decided that is not safest thing to do if you are pumping the gun in rapid fire, the large hook at muzzle end will probably keep your hand from slipping in front of the muzzle! GG&G also makes a 5rd sidesaddle to mount to receiver and one version has a single point sling attachment point mounted to sidesaddle. Video guy is correct when he says Voodoo scabbard is a bad idea! Someone needs to manufacture one that can handle a shockwave with 3 and 9 rails with light/laser attached, handstop at 6 and also a sidesaddle mounted to scabbard!
Never mind the Nay sayers ! Your adaptations are spot on ! Aim with laser, good idea! No stock to really judge by. Mine, from the hip, no laser, I undershoot, shoot low. I learned to shoot higher than what I think I need. Aim slightly higher. Will look into this. The Talon grips, are , well, slippery. Agreed. If functional, even if ugly, wrap them. These are designed to be functional, not cute. Some wrap with Hockey stick tape, etc. If functional, who care about looks. I own 500, 590 Mossberg, and , 870 Remington. I have never had trouble with polymer, cracks, issues, any. Both are solid gun platforms! I am right handed, Remington safety, affords me no problems. I can use ambidextrous safety on Mossberg's with ease also. The 1 extra shell, in the shockwave, made my decision,. With addition, of adapter, for mini shells, I was aware of, helped me make the call . Good legal information! Well stated. People dismiss birdshot, small shells, for home defense. Buckshot will travel through walls, go outside, and to neighbors house. Same as slugs! If someone does not think birdshot is A deterrent, well, find out the hard way. , LOL. If someone was wearing body armor, they would go down, solid! Few people who home invade, wear helmet, or face shield. Birdshot will, obliterate exposed areas. No damage to family, or Neighbors. To each, their own. Well constructed review, and video sir. Sidesaddle, for extra ammo next. My sling, can hold 25 rounds, also possible option. Thank you for video sir. Peace, John.
My Preference is Mossberg vs Remington.I have Winchesters and Remingtons but Mossberg has Tapped Screws on top of the receiver to mount the rails.and 1 extra round mag tube and the tang safety is my main preference to get it off fast and on the trigger faster verses a cross bolt safety on the back of the trigger guard.
I have the same laser and it sucks...I was hoping it was going to work but when you mount this upside down such as what is shown and how I did it the elevation is difficult to adjust. There just isn't enough movement to get it all the way down.
Everything but laser I put a 6 round holder on receiver, a breacher that screws on tube still makes it non nfa :), better safety the pro mag, talon grips of course, and glow sight :) yes the mini shell loader is a necessity.
What you need now is: A 6 shell side saddle, an extended action release lever and a red dot site (moving your laser forward on the rail) for additional aiming capability.
Great video. Here's a tip though. Use a blow drier or heat gun on that grip material. Then you can form it without any bubbles to just about any shape you'd run into on a firearm. Cheers sir and now I need a Shockwave. Lol
Thank you. I wasn't sure if that would make the adhesive gooey so I hadn't tried it, good to know that it won't ruin it. I believe that they now make an actual cutout for this gun which makes it even easier.
VFG is legal on this gun, I put one on my 870 TAC-14. It's only illegal to put a VFG on a sub-26 inch pistol. This is over 26 inches and is classified only as a firearm not a pistol.
Everyone I watch says the same thing about the polymer trigger assembly. "They have a potential to break". Is that really true? I have a 590 w/ poly trigger assembly that was a Police trade in and it's flawless!
In general on the 500 series, the polymer triggers are just fine and will hold up perfectly well. On shotguns with a stock or pistol-grip, the recoil energy is not on the trigger/trigger guard but on the stock or grip. On these, you have a tendency to squeeze them harder to keep them in your hand which is why I chose to put the upgraded FCG in.
If you don't want an overlap on the grips, you could use a bit of super glue down the seem to seal it shut, just be careful not to get it on the grip. It's not a big deal but if you ever want to sell it, it would just look nicer, you could always buy a new grip, but no one wants to put money into something they are selling.
You do not need grip tape if you are using mini-shells, just dont as the recoil is rather mild. Nor a laser or red dot, its really a short range weapon. I put I fiber optic front sight and the mini shell adapter, done, works great. Try it before adding all the mods, you will likely find few to none are needed. .
Yeah that's cool. A little less time with the screws bullshit, some good tips,but...Time better spent on dropping and replacing the trigger group and the accuracy and little review of the laser and trigger.also ballpark prices for the add ons. Thanks .
I often use self adhesive sandpaper on knives and some pistol grips. It's inexpensive, easily replacable and lasts for years. The talon grip came off my Kahr polymer grip and the sandpaper worked better.
You can successfully aim it with the bead sight and hit what you are shooting at, if you want to hold it out in front of your face. This gun is most useful from the hip or side, hence the laser.
As long as you don't replace the grip or alter the overall length there is not an issue with adding accessories. The big one is that grip, do not change it to a pistol grip or a stock. Adding lasers, sandpaper and other things has no effect whatsoever on it's legal status.
No probs. Enjoyed the video. Been using clip and shells for over a year now. My wife and daughters take to shotgunning now. Being in Texas, have to wait for the Shockwave though.
Great video. Thank you for all the information. I've been debating about getting one of these for quite some time. I think I'm going to hop on Palmetto State armory.com and purchase one. I think with the mini shotshells my wife would be able to enjoy this shotgun as much as I will with some two and three quarter inch loads

This shotgun design is a challenge like throwing a knife or a tomahawk, once mastered it's a beautiful thing to see.

Just seen Pacmayr now offering a sleeve for the birdheads grip. Definitely gonna check it out for my shockwave.
Or just get skateboard tape cheaper and more of it

I just bought the CT version with the integrated Crimson Trace built in. Extra $100, done.
Great video. Thanks for the heads up on the voodoo tactical breacher scabbard. I also didn't know there was an aluminum option for the cheap plastic trigger group.
Thank-you. That metal trigger group is hard to get your hands on.
+sibco96 Thank you.
Thanks for the great ideas...nice video!
Thank you.
Pretty cool video 😎👍
Thank you.
@@HammerStriker no problem man....those are nice guns...I'm just not a fan of the pidgeon head handle lol
I got the slip on rubber grip. Like a sock. I truly like it.
Don't ask me the name of it, I don't know, but the Google does
Never mind the Nay sayers !
Nice video!
Just a fyi talon grips makes a grip cut for the raptor pistol grip just do a search on there website and it will come up
My Preference is Mossberg vs Remington.I have Winchesters and Remingtons but Mossberg has Tapped Screws on top of the receiver to mount the rails.and 1 extra round mag tube and the tang safety is my main preference to get it off fast and on the trigger faster verses a cross bolt safety on the back of the trigger guard.
Good video and info FYI keep your locktite in the fridge it creates an easy to deal with not messy consistency 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you.
Should have went with the UTG Bulldot laser sight for that gun, it's way better then that little dot laser sight on a shotgun...
Great job. Will have to get the laser. I have a flash light but ur idea is better
Thank-you.
I have the same laser and it sucks...I was hoping it was going to work but when you mount this upside down such as what is shown and how I did it the elevation is difficult to adjust. There just isn't enough movement to get it all the way down.
Great video👍
Thank you.
Everything but laser I put a 6 round holder on receiver, a breacher that screws on tube still makes it non nfa :), better safety the pro mag, talon grips of course, and glow sight :) yes the mini shell loader is a necessity.
We'll done with good instructions and accompanying video.
Thank-you.
What you need now is: A 6 shell side saddle, an extended action release lever and a red dot site (moving your laser forward on the rail) for additional aiming capability.
Well done!
Thank you.
I just added the rubber grip for my mossy 590 shockwave from Talon Grips and it's a perfect fit and feels great.
VFG is legal on this gun, I put one on my 870 TAC-14. It's only illegal to put a VFG on a sub-26 inch pistol. This is over 26 inches and is classified only as a firearm not a pistol.
Garrett - reeeeaaalllyyyy.
nice job on the grip
Thank you.
On these, you have a tendency to squeeze them harder to keep them in your hand which is why I chose to put the upgraded FCG in.
good tip on the grip.
Thank you.
Great video, info. Thank you
Thank you.
Hammer,
Very helpful video.
Does your laser hold zero?
Thanks.
I have not had any problem with it holding zero, though I am not checking it at a "bullseye accuracy" level given the nature of the gun.
If you don't want an overlap on the grips, you could use a bit of super glue down the seem to seal it shut, just be careful not to get it on the grip. It's not a big deal but if you ever want to sell it, it would just look nicer, you could always buy a new grip, but no one wants to put money into something they are selling.
thanks for making this video
Great video...very informative ....thanks so much...
Thank you.
Great vid, thanks!
Thank you.
You do not need grip tape if you are using mini-shells, just dont as the recoil is rather mild. Nor a laser or red dot, its really a short range weapon. I put I fiber optic front sight and the mini shell adapter, done, works great. Try it before adding all the mods, you will likely find few to none are needed.
.
The advantage of a laser light is being able to shoot it from the hip.
I wonder if stippling the grip would work.
It likely would, just a lot more work but the same end result - better grip surface.
Good review, thanks!
Thank you.
Thanks for the tutorial really helpful
Your awesome
Thank you.
Just copied your set up. perfect and actually makes a great home defense gun. Well executed.
Thank-you. It turns a cool novelty into a useful defensive firearm.
Add a SB Tactical arm brace and have barrel threaded for screw in chokes and it makes it a really versatile weapon...
Have you had a problem with your safety switch, & if you do , do you plan to replace it?
Other than it hitting the web of my hand by the thumb if I don't grip it correctly, I have had not problems with it.
@@HammerStriker Thank you for your response, great video.
The bead sight is plenty useful. Hickcock 45 is making 100 yard shots with a slug with it.
You can successfully aim it with the bead sight and hit what you are shooting at, if you want to hold it out in front of your face. This gun is most useful from the hip or side, hence the laser.
They make a brace for them now
I hope you got an ATF stamp. The Mossberg 590 is legal, only because it is 'unmodified'. Once you modify it, you have a short-barrel shotgun.
As long as you don't replace the grip or alter the overall length there is not an issue with adding accessories. The big one is that grip, do not change it to a pistol grip or a stock. Adding lasers, sandpaper and other things has no effect whatsoever on it's legal status.
Hammer,
Install the Opsol mini clip with the bolt closed, not open. It is easier with bolt in, and allows the proper placement without much effort.
Thanks for that tip, it does make it easier.
Thank-you. The mini-shells (if you can find them) make this a lot of fun to shoot. It can be a handful with full power loads (though still quite fun).
Now put a non-folding arm brace on and it'll completely transform it.
