I do kinda of the cheap plot also, I have a compact tractor & I found an old disc in the woods where I live.
I spread the corn like you, then pull the 10ft disc on the corn, so I disc the ground from last year, then I throw the corn down & disc again. works pretty good for me too. I use about 10lbs of RR corn per half acre from E-Bay..

lbs per acre depends on kernals per lb. It varies among varieties. Also, unless too wet always pack the soil after disking and that will lock in the moisture. In most cases a lawn roller works better than most cultipackers.

Yes packing it is a great step to add in there

Very nice video, it is great to see content promoting techniques that do not require a ton of investment in equipment. Keep up the great work.

Great video.. been looking into doing same thing. How will you deal with leftover corn thatch and corn stock?

I have a pull behind mower for my atv that I will pull through all these stocks next spring. If you didn’t have an atv, you could use a rising lawn mower. I may even try the little disk I have for my atv as well and just till in all the old plant matter

I've been thinking about doing a corn plot on my farm it's near a lot of agriculture, but It's all hay ground /alfalfa. I have 80 acres around 40 is alfalfa. I could probably get an acre or two on field edges.
Think corn would be my best bet or anything else come to mind?

Yeah I think corn would be a good option. I would suggest rotating the crops from time to time. But if you went with beans I would try to get more than 2 acres. There’s a chance they will wipe out the beans quick.

What kind of corn did you plant

    • @huntinglandmike

It was a mixture of all kinds of field corn from a local farmers seed tests. And most of it was at least a couple years old.
