    "Forced eSport" is honestly the biggest issue with games as sports in general, you don't get to simply decide something is going to be competitive on that level, you must foster an environment that allows it to happen and do your best not to get in the way. You can't make people interested in something against their will.

    I really like his realistic outlook on esports and esports coverage. It's just not always sustainable to have a huge show. I think what Valve used to do with the international where buying cosmetics was specifically tied to a prize pool made sense. That holds the community accountable for it too bc that's ultimately who it's for. It's not just goodwill from the publishers, that's not sustainable.

      what valve does for dota is not replicable. value pays out of pocket big time to host that tourny and just to keep dota around.
      league is so much bigger then dota and i assume skin sales due to popular characters sell much more relatively then dota does. lol also paywalls champs. dota all champs are free from the start. yet even riot still struggles financially. truth is esports and gaming is general is very very hard to monetize after games all went free. value makes money as THE pc games market place and their insane fees. i bet cs2 doesnt even make money.

    Haven't watched the entire video yet, but on the topic of why esports are so volatile - regular physical sports can be blown up and built an ecosystem/for profit business around because no one owns the IP of basketball, or football, etc. Esports on the other hand are very problematic because somebody else owns the IP you are trying to capitalize on. For a game to become a staple and commercialized esport it needs true support from the originator of the IP, because other people don't want to touch it really due to the legal ownership of the IP. Either that or the game needs to be public domain.
    Blizzard has mishandled StarCraft esports because they weren't getting the cut of the pie they thought they should have, because they made the game and felt entitled. Why cant we have nice things? Corporate greed, somebody somewhere isn't making enough money from it. Sigh...

    • @Sapreme
      @Sapreme 3 месяца назад

      I worked at a LAN cafe around 2006 and Blizzard was just as greedy back then. The owner wanted to host some WC3 tournaments and asked Blizzard for permission. Blizzard told us that we would have to pay royalties and liscensing fees to even have BNET games installed on our computers, and then another fee to host the tournament. We said screw Blizzard after that and kept their games on our PCs anyway. It wasn't even a big place either, there would been like 14 entrants at best and we only asked because we thought it would have been cool if our favorite game company gave us their approval to play our favorite game

    Even though I am the biggest admirer of Serral, because I think he plays Zerg as close to perfection as it gets. And he is not just like, I am simply more talented than others. No, Serral is fighting, and when he kills the hard opponents, he fights on 150%. I remember him looking so exhausted after a BO5 in grand finals or other hard opponents, that I was concerned about his wealth. I mean, am I the only one who sees that? Not even the commentators mention that. I knew he is going to be huge 7 years ago before he won a tourmy. I really admire him.
    BUT
    I have to say, that Artosis made a good point here. The GSL is the highest level of SC2 ever, and if the greatest players of the GSL getting older, like Maru, Rogue, Innovation and all the big names, that doesn't mean they are worse with what they have achieved in their prime, because they lose against Serral and Clem today. I don't know who is the GOAT, but, I love Serral's attitude the most, his will to win like no one else. His perfection.

    loved this. Thank you. RT honesty goes along way. I hate how ppl tippy toe around subjects and PRETEND to be something. ppl nowadays are delusional and dont look up KNOWN FACTS.

    Wow if everything wrong leads to over a decade of a game being played a t a high level alongside another version of the same game... I wonder what doing things right looks like!

    I think they have to change the business model for making video games for SC3. The need to stop paying coders for bad ideas. The Ideas should be judged on merit. And they should make it over a long period of time, so that is based on good ideas. And they should do a development program put into SC2, so people can make their own unit. And if it ends up in the game, then they get a royalty. And the data for the game can be collected over a long period of time.
    The old business model for creating games comes with an astronomical amount of risk for a third installment of StarCraft. It needs changing.

    So why exactly doesn Artosis like playing Broodwar over SC2?
    Or why didn't SC2 beat Broodwars popularity in Korea?
    I have the theory that Broodwar allows for more skill expression in strategy and that's what makes it more interesting. SC2 is reactionary, players react to from which direction the thing is coming which is coming every game. If that were different, I think SC2 would be way more popular.
