If it's a seasoned criminal, they'll immediately switch off the phone, remove existing sim card and then leave the phone for a year or more , until police finally give up searching for it due to passage of certain period of time , then they'll sell it to someone else , who'll send it to some other place far away from any legal jurisdiction.
