Thank you for the refresher lessons!!!!. Really liked the additional info. I have been practicing that for a couple years and really only nailed that tricky cross picking part a few times. Yes-- always wondering if i will flub it. Ive' slowed the tempo for sure. Also your update a while ago for the chord change on Velvet Green. Subtle but really nice!!!! Sweet.
Enjoyed the mother goose update. Mark was wondering if you could send me a link to the Luther version of Oh Darling we did a couple years back. I'd sure appreciate it
Very nice lesson again, thank you very much ! You must have put a lot of work into all this. And you made it very clear why Ian's right hand work is so very special. Yet I will not even try to do that in favour of playing maximum fluent and, most important, conserve my own playing style. One reason why you sound so very much like Ian is not only your accurate picking work, but also the fact that you pick very close to the saddle - a style which may help to cut through a loud audience, but also is unneccesarily sharp and unpleasant - at least to my tastes. While we all are heading to top of perfection here (and know we never will) you have to do the little "power G upstroke" x x 0 0 3 3 much more accentuated and aggressive. But just like Ian you are not the typical Rock Musican anyway - I only need to look at the way you play the A shape every time... Anyway, thank you for these lots of details ! Greets, Conny
I agree, fingers that is. I'm only aware of one song that Ian played sans plectrum and that is Sanctuary off the SLOB album. I'm sure there must have been others.
Fabulous - what guitar are you playing - it sounds great 👍🏼 Really appreciate your Tull videos - they’ve helped me learn a few tunes I wouldn’t otherwise. Be able to play ☺️👌🏼
Thanks so much! Here I'm playing a 1991 Martin D-41. It was a limited release, Brazilian rosewood. For the video I scooped the mids and lowered the bass with EQ just because that's how they mix all acoustic guitars. So, it has more bass than what is displayed here. It's the best dreadnought I've ever played and I'm very fortunate to own it.
Nice--thought I had everything by ear but you definitely helped in some sections, Couple of my own: on the "As I did walk by" part, when singing, I find it difficult to slide it and thus cheat: I replace the slide with the ring finger on the fourth fret, and then again on the lower string after the open string pick. Nice thing about that is even is you miss your target, the dual strings sound great. Also, in the bear little solo break, help to play way down by bridge. Thx for your efforts
Thanks. Yeah, the fast lick, I can nail about 25% of the time, get pretty close 25% of the time, have a bobble or two 25% of the time, and completely muff it the other quarter.
Thanks to you and this lesson I’ve taken the opportunity to finally learn this one, so your video is greatly appreciated! I’ve really made a deep dive into this, including isolating the guitar (I use Moises) and slowing down and looping the relevant part (with Transcribe) to clearly hear what’s going on. So if you don’t mind I’d like to suggest that I think you’ve got some extra notes in the “pull off” phrase of the verse. Here are the notes I’m hearing (frets counted from the capo): D2 D4 G0 B0 G0 D5 pull off to D0 G0 D4 D2/G2. The timing is tricky (of course!). I suspect Ian is picking “up” in order to quickly strike that open G before getting back to D4. Kindly try this suggestion and see if you agree. Best regards.
I'll try that. But, go to the 1:00 mark of this video and slow the video speed down to .5 or .25 and watch his fingers. I'm pretty sure I see him doing what I'm doing in the video. If it looks otherwise to you, let me know. You know how obsessive I am about getting these things perfect. Cheers to you and I always appreciate your input! I've used one of those audio splitters, in fact, I think it's called splitter. Free program. That's just amazing technology to be able to isolate instruments. I used it to split out the drums on a track I wanted to use on a cover. All my drumming mates are so damn busy they never have time to come to my studio so I just have to use a drum machine, or similar. Happy New Years too.
@@snoozedoctor thanks for replying. Oh, so hard to tell from the video! The camera angle isn’t the best, unfortunately. It’s difficult to see if he’s actually pressing down on the fretboard or if his fingers are hovering over it. I was referring to the original recording, so it’s entirely possible that after umpteen years (and a slower tempo) the live version might have changed somewhat. I’ll check out splitter - always good to have as many tools as possible. Happy New Year to you as well!
Great tutorial! I have really enjoyed your help with the songs by Jethro Tull. You capture so many fills I have trouble figuring out! Thanks!
You are very welcome!

Yeah, what makes that part so hard is the pause there before you have to go full out. It's just hard when you have no right hand momentum to transfer.
Se oye IGUALITO!!, siempre es un deleite escuchar el Tull acústico 👌
Gracias!

That sure was fun, although I wasn't sure we could get it started after all that laughing. ruclips.net/video/E-5Q7tfUZLU/видео.html
A great follow up to the first tutorial, which was also wonderful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!

Cheers! Thanks for commenting. Ian's right hand is just ridiculously accurate. The lick to end this song is REALLY hard for me.
always interesting and informative with your Tull masterclasses, great tips, I play it with fingers, no pick, it's easier for me.

Thanks so much for those great additional precisions; I'll work on that!🙂

@@swatprof I listened again and you are right, I think in both cases he's doing 9-8-5-8
instead of 8-9-8-5-8
very helpful instruction thank you.

It would be helpful if you gave the string/frets or notes
I'll do that more in the future! Thanks.
Yes please call the shape with a capo. Not the actual chord. Thank u!
I'm with you.
