Nonsense, the RN preferred it that way, better situational awareness for the watch officers and in action. The US Navy learned the same lesson and followed suit with their DEs and later built Fletcher class DDs.
Many of these were converted whaling ships, with many of their crews former civilian sailors they weren't asked to do anything they hadn't already done (aside from attack submarines)
Excellent ships, able to keep going despite the seas. Something we might consider where overseas policing is required? Or Channel migrants are to be detered?
A Corvette was launched…..and immediately began to roll. Big respect for the ships and the men who sailed them.
My grandfather served on a RCN Corvette, HMCS Dundas during the war.
The Irish Naval Service operated three flower class corvettes between 1946 - 1972. They were well able to cope with Atlantic weather !
Check out the excellent film 'The Cruel Sea' (1953) based on a novel written by a RN Officer who served in the Battle of the Atlantic in WWII.
That is truly one of the great films about WWII in the Atlantic, if not the best.
That film moves me to tears ...
I'd like to thank the royal navy for allowing us yanks to name our most iconic sports car after your excellent warship.
I taught on cruisers from San Diego to
the Persian Gulf, doing Unreps & supplying other ships.
John Prescott yeah sure
It is criminal that they had open bridges. Inexcusable. My deepest sympathies.

My grandfather was on the Zinnia which was torpedoed off Portugal. I am keen to find any pictures or more info.

These things had an open bridge on the North Atlantic. What were they thinking?
