I’m SO glad that woman told you about burning the paper money for the decreased, I was really worried for you! It’s bad luck to show it to ppl too so she seemed to be kind enough to explain and not be offended. 👍🏼
My mom and I were cackling so hard (in a "oh-no-poor-Chris" kind of way!) when you were buying the paper money and candles!! Hk-ers actually buy it quite often for loved ones who passed away; so it's not that bad but yeah definitely not a souvenir 😂. Love your HK series! 👍🏻
@@Travelwithchris My grandma did tell me never possessed these items or will brings you very bad fortune. Make some wishes pray to your ancestors. Telling them you are sending them some gifts and fully burn out those items without any trace. They are suppose to be gifts for the dead. My friend this is serious not a funny matter.
@@Travelwithchris You did not walk past those "paper craft shop" specialise in these "gifts for the dead". They can make a paper mansion, a paper Lamborghini and even paper iPhone as requested.
@@Travelwithchris . I was cringing so hard. But I would keep it as souvenir. It's funny. . . if you're not superstitious. The emperor on the bills is the Chinese version of Hades.
@@Travelwithchris Not just HK'ers, it's at least a tradition/belief of the Southern Chinese as we follow the same practices in the US, especially when it's Ching Ming, the Spring Festival where gravesite cleaning is done. Burning candles and incense is a way to let the spirits of our family members know that we are there to provide them offerings of money, and food (usually bring oranges, roast pork, dim sum, etc.) at their gravesite. Carrying that money is considered bad luck as it's for the dead, and Chinese culture frowns upon talking about or carrying any representations of the dead/death.
Chris: You are so lucky to meet the lady who patiently explained the purpose of those banknotes .I guess another reason is to prepare for July festival ,special experience and great video😄
Many Hong Kongers are lack of patients and short tempered especially those taxi drivers. A popular cafe call Australian Dairy Co. also infamous for their rushy and rude services.
Actually, the chance of having 7 rainy days in a row in HK is about 2 to 3 times a year. 5 hot months, 1 freezing and 6 nice warm/cool months annually, half dry and half humid.
As someone from Hong Kong. If you ever go back to Hong Kong Chris. Just remember. Locals will generally tell you what you want to hear just to get a sale. Unfortunately Hong Kong has a high amount of dishonesty when it comes to local vendors if you're unable to communicate with them. It's not to say all but it's common place. The jade is likely 90% chance to be fake and no it won't provide you with good luck because it needs to go through a process of taken to a temple/priest to receive it's blessings to give good luck.
Harbor Freight is a good store for tools, saved me so much money since I discovered it. We only go to home depot for things that aren't tools. I've literally bought every tool at harbor Freight the past 6 years or so, power drill, saws, car jack, a press, big air compressor, paint sprayer, sand blaster, trash cans, pressure washer and a ton of stuff you get the point and it saved me a lot of money since I'm not a contractor or anything like that the tools don't have to be the best out there and I'm glad I have that option now for more affordable tools.
I visited Hong Kong in 1988. Great shopping and tastiest foods!! I speak Cantonese so it was easier to converse. I was there in July: very hot, humid and rain! All the way from Canada.
I knew when you were buying the funeral items what they were. I've lived in Asia for twenty years now so am familiar with them. Years ago, I bought what I thought was a coffee table in Korea until one of my Korean friends visited me and told me it was a funeral table that various things are placed on at a funeral including the incense that you bought. So you're not the only one to make that blunder. Thanks for sharing, Chris.

when you haggle for the price always remember...what they say the price is,half that is the real price so start at about a 1/4 of the price they say and try for about half or 3/4 of the price they quote at the beginning
Thank you for sharing all your videos! Thank you for being nice to the vendors! They are just making a living. Unfortunately, some RUclipsr gave the vendors bad experiences.
I literally don’t buy streets stuffs esp. those said to be “second hands” items😅 but H.K is definitely a lovely country to tour, I’m going this year end🤨🤪🥳
Sundays’ holidays for Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers in HK so you see these ladies gathering all over parks in HK having fun with their friends. The park next to where u were doing the opening is one of the most dodgy places in HK as that’s where the biggest homeless / addicts community is (with a methadone clinic down the street), so I won’t recommend staying there after dark..
the best time to come is X'mas or Chinese New Year, we will have many decorations both indoor and outdoor. For you, I guess you want to see the culture stuff so you may want to come during Chinese New Year but some shops will be closed for 1 day to 1 week (half of the restaurants are still open) because we have gathering with friends and family. On the 3rd or 4th day normally we have a big firework in Victoria Harbor (much fancier than the one in US). Majority of the famous street food will be closed. For the Jade that you bought, you may bargain with the guy and have some discount (bargain is not a practice here but he did over priced that piece) We Chinese do have many traditional things you need to aware of, like the money that your bought is for the decreased. June - Sept normally we will have lot of rain or sometime will have typhoon, weather is humid and hot here. During Spring time, Feb - March is very humid too. Next time when you come and if I have time, may let me know in advance so I can show you some of our culture.
That's bad luck to show people those bills, huh? 🤔 Hm. Never knew. I guess you really DO learn something new every day. This video will help their economy Chris. They all seemed mostly kind but nervous. Global Stress, main.

Yeah those money and candles u burn then for a family members or friends pass away. Is to give the money for them to spend where else the spirit goes. A lot Chinese people who believe in Buddhism does this religion ceremonies. So don’t keep those money and candles and incense.
Understandable that this was a low key visit to the market. Most of that stuff is probably nothing you need and you have limited space. I personally don't purchase Jade at these markets as most of them are knock offs. I mean for $20 something, that one wasn't super expensive. But for me personally, I would stay away from buying jewelry. I recall buying a "Jade" neckless at a Chinese market in Australia once and when I brought it home it turned out to be a cheap painted piece of plastic with glue behind it. Ouch.
I am sorry I did not catch your video series earlier. When you're in those types of markets, "HAGGLE" is a must and aggressive too. Make an offer of 1/3 to 1/2 of the asking price. The old lady that sold you the 'money' for the dead people, I am not sure she could explain to you that they are bad luck to be regarded as souvenir, if I were to defend her, those beliefs were held by the Asian culture and more specifically for the Chinese. She should have at least tried a little bit harder not to sell those things to you, but that's part of the adventure and why you hired the female tour guide in the first place. HK is an interesting place, where the East meets the West and that's what makes it unique.

Better bring one local friend with you to shop in local markets as most vendors don't speak English, and to avoid any misunderstanding.
