Now if you add the right spring to load the variable plate you can have it do it automatically. The spring tension will change the torque required to drop the gearing to its lowest.
Modern CVTs also usually have 2 planetary gears now so they can both get more traction and better speed. you can feel this in normal use as a jolt in speed when you get above the threshold.
Finally, a simple explanation for what’s really going on with a CVT. But it’s kind of like communism. More of an academic excercise rather than a practical solution. Nissan CVTs are notorious for being hunks of garbage. The time I spent behind the wheel of a few was odd because the engine doesn’t rev the way that you expect it to after driving standard autos and MTs for a lifetime- a bit off putting, but performance was nice. I hope this technology continues to improve.
I’m pretty sure it was in the Ferrari 430, and it drove really fine, the tech is already good, it’s that they are used in the wrong application while also being cheaply manufactured
It’s not that they are less reliable, it’s that they are used in the wrong application, city cars have them for some reason even though they are meant to be for racing/high performance applications

nice explanation! so the input pulley is fixable?
You would need a tensioner if one pulley was fixed

Forgot to mention that these types of transmissions tend to be less reliable than other types of transmissions.
It’s not that they are less reliable, it’s that they are used in the wrong application, city cars have them for some reason even though they are meant to be for racing/high performance applications
