十二花神是中国民间传说，农历二月十二是百花的生日，人们称之为花朝节，因此中国民间便有一个花朝之庆。正所谓“日日有花开，月月有花神”，每年一共有十二个月份，每月都有一位花神。在传统文化中，这十二花神更为人们所信奉。
自古以来，在人们的固有认知中，花神都是女子，大家很少知道的男花神们。由于对十二花神的认定角度不同。大体是这三个体系:十二男花神、十二女花神、混合十二花神。
一月：梅花。
遥知不是雪，为有暗香来；
相思一夜梅花发，忽到窗前疑是君？
二月：杏花。
春日游，杏花吹满头。陌上谁家年少，足风流？
-伏雨朝寒愁不胜，那能还傍杏花行；
三月：桃花。
人间四月芳菲尽，山寺桃花始盛开。
去年今日此门中，人面桃花相映红；
四月：芍药、牡丹花。
庭前芍药，池上芙蕖，唯有牡丹真国色，花开时节动京城!
有此倾城好颜色，天教晚发赛诸花。
五月：石榴花。
浓绿万枝红一点，动人春色不须多。
五月榴花照眼明，枝间时见子初成。
六月：荷花。
接天莲叶无穷碧，映日荷花别样红。
水中仙子并红腮,一点芳心两处开。
七月：玉簪花。
瑶池仙子宴流霞，醉里遗簪幻作花；
昨夜花神出蕊宫，绿云袅袅不禁风。
八月：桂花。
何须浅碧深红色，自是花中第一流；
可怜天上桂花孤，试问姮娥更要无。
九月：菊花。
采菊东篱下，悠然见南山；
待到秋来九月八，我花开后百花杀。
十月：芙蓉花。
绿裳丹脸水芙蓉,不谓佳名偶自同；
晓妆如玉暮如霞，浓淡分秋染此花。
十一月：山茶花。
山茶花下醉初醒，却过西村看夕阳；
犀甲凌寒碧叶重，玉杯擎处露华浓。
十二月：水仙花。
仙家遗玉种，岁晚发幽芳。吹到槛边争荡激，直疑身似水仙王。
而女十二花神，基本就是选取了历史上有名的美人及后宫妃子等，之所以被认定为十二花神，多是与她们一些经历和传说有关。但说法有很多，版本不尽相同。如一月梅花花神梅妃、二月杏花花神谢道韫、三月梨花花神虢国夫人、四月牡丹花神杨贵妃、五月石榴花神潘夫人、六月莲花花神西施、七月秋海棠花神秦若兰、八月桂花花神张丽华、九月菊花花神梁红玉、十月芙蓉花神花蕊夫人、十一月山茶花花神袁宝儿、十二月水仙花神甄夫人。
