- Organist Jonathan Scott performs his solo organ arrangement of Ave Verum by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the organ of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Failsworth, Manchester. The score of this transcription is available here: www.scottbroth...
“This is the instrument where I first began playing the organ when I became organist at the age of 10 and taught myself to play the pedals! I practised on this instrument and played for all services, weddings and funerals for the next 7 years. It was wonderful to return and film Ave Verum, a piece which I often played during services at this Church.” Jonathan

St. Mary's R.C. Church, The Immaculate Conception, Failsworth, Manchester, UK.
St Mary's in Failsworth was conceived as a Roman Catholic devotional shrine to the Virgin Mary in Romanesque basilican style and was opened in 1964. The previous Church of St. Mary was opened in 1865, but closed in 1959 due to subsidence and was demolished in 1964. A new Church was designed by Tadeusz Lesisz (1918-2009) of Greenhalgh & Williams architects in 1961. Leisiz had a distinguished career as a Naval Officer in WWII, studied to be an architect at Oxford and was one of the most important figures in Manchester's Polish Community.
Today the Church retains almost all of its original features, and it contains many striking original designs including a huge mosaic reredos of 'Our Lady of all Graces' designed by a young parishioner, B. Nolan, which was made in Italy and installed by Alberti, Lupton & Co. of Moston. The west front entrance archway houses a suspended aluminium figure of the Virgin Mary made by E & J Blackwell and designed by Lesisz as a depiction of 'The Immaculate Conception'. The statue in the Lady Chapel is described as 'A vision by St Catherine of Mary as Queen of the Universe'.
The stained glass is by Charles Lightfoot and incorporates many pieces from the original Victorian Church including a large west window of the Assumption, and Ascension of Mary into heaven.
The organ in the west gallery is a 6 rank extension instrument installed by Jardine & Co. of Manchester in 1964.

One of my favourite pieces of music. We used to sing this in the Humphry Davy Grammar School Choir, I was a treble and in those days didn't have any problem hitting the really high notes.
Jonathan played Schubert's Ave Maria on this organ previously.
A beautiful rendition. Thank you Jonathan.
In the hour of my death. ⚰🌹
I'm listening to and singing along.... And in my imagination I can see 10 years old Jonathan doing his first steps as organist. How proud of you has been your mom this day when she's heard Widor's Toccata played by you.
I hope you have enjoyed your spare time and wishing you all the best for next concerts. Stay well! Greetings to you both and to your parents.🤗🍀
What a truly beautiful piece of music, played so wonderfully by Jonathan! That music had an ethereal quality about it - gorgeous! How lovely to go back again to St Mary's. You do produce some amazing videos from that organ! Thank you both for sharing this with us. xx

Very beautiful and full of emotion! This organ, Jonathan's childhood friend, has a wonderful, incredible sound! The video is very good, showing more of this beautiful Church. Thank you both for this amazing video!
A celestial & spiritual musical gift. Love the registrations. Enjoyed the personal note from Jonathan in the description & believe he is as moved playing this piece as I am listening to it. Thank you so much for sharing this. ❤❤💐🎹🎶
This music brings back good memories. I also played Mozart's Ave Verum in the church, specifically at the consecration of the mass.
Thanks for this gift. The church has some nice stained glass windows and the organ you started with still sounds great. Greetings!!❤🤗😘😘
In Memory of
Miguel "Mike" Enriquez (1951 - 2023)😢😢😢
I recognised the 1960s Jardine console straightaway, likewise the tremulant.
Thanks for this simple rendering.
Perfectly done.
Truly beautiful, Jonathan - this particular instrument probably holds very special memories for you as a very young organist? I sang (Mozart's) Ave Verum Corpus (as a bass choir-member) many times in the 1970's - during Mass at St Werburgh's Church, Chester. Thank you for posting.
What a lovely, simple, and beautiful instrument. And as always, magnificently played! Thank you, Scott Brothers for all the wonderful music!
Hello Jonathan, I sang this hymn as a young boy in our church choir. I am 75 years of age now, so you can imaging the emotion I experienced hearing this wonderful piece again! You played it so beautifully and reverently! I will treasure this recording!....God's Blessings to you and Tom! Will Ortiz
I have been waiting for this one!!! Thank you Mr.Scott!!! ❤️
Your work is simply indescribably beautiful, each piece adapted to this majestic instrument is something to be cherished . Thanks for that!
Beutiful and so serene. A return to the "traditional" music once used by the Catholic Church and played by Johnathan as a budding organist. I will book end this with the Shubert "Ave Maria" played on this organ. From Chicago, U.S.A.
Just beautiful music played with such feeling and a stunning video. Thank you Jonathan and Tom.
Could you play the pipe organ the cheerful piece by Léo Delibes (1836-1891) arr. J. Scott Prelude, Mazurka and Waltz (Coppélia) ? 🙏
Wonderful you could return to the church of your organ playing origins. Beautiful, peaceful rendition. Thank you J & T.
Thank you. As daylight wanes on an island in Lake Superior....
Beautiful. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Playing this organ must bring back many happy memories.
Such a moving piece of music one of my favourites but you played it so very well…with such care and sensitivity and respect.
Sharing with this with my friend who is from Manchester.
Thank you xx
Very sensitiv and beautiful Mozart piece that you play with a wonderful organ sound thank you Jonathan🙏
Just lovely, thank you. But your feet could have hardly touched the ground from Spain before here you are again! I'm not complaining, far from it, but a quick paddle in the sea doesn't constitute a holiday! Stop rushing about so much! Relax a little, give your minds and bodies a break, we love you and what you do dearly, but please look after yourselves. Kindest and fond regards, a very thankful viewer.
Just lovely. Thank you, Jonathan xx
Very pretty!
Yess, correct tempi… one of the best perform. by far, Thanks for paying att. to the char. of this divine piece of music👌 👏🎹🎹🎹
Wow! I played at that church for a funeral. It is a lovely instrument to play and seeing Jonathan play it has made my day!!! As ever, beautiful playing by such a talented guy. Looking forward to seeing you in Bridgewater Hall with Tom in November!!! Can't wait! Also had this sung at my wedding many many years ago ♥♥♥♥♥♥
Wunderbar vorgetragen. Danke 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Nice.
A very revered tempo. Masterful registration and particularly like the tremolo at measure #30 powerful crescendo contrasted so well with pianissimo which is so important to express in this piece. This is one of Mozart's greatest works. Thank you for sharing this.
So much variation in tone from only 6 ranks! You both did a beautiful job bringing beauty to us. I do have a question about what happened at 2:15? It sounds like the tremulant caused a loss of wind and unequal tuning in some of the pipes? Is that correct? Maybe there's something on the organ that is supposed to cause a celeste effect? Please educate me.
FANTASTIC
I have always found this a very emotionally moving piece, now especially so in the beautiful church of St Mary’s Failsworth, which has been part of your lives for many years. I’ll return to this lovely video again and again.😅
C'est beau !... merci.
This performance makes this beautiful, spiritual and elusive piece from Mozart, available for all. Thank you.
Thanks. What a peaceful part of my day ❤
Beautiful. Thank you Jonathan and Tom.
Amazing music and fantastic organist !
Very nice Jonathan. The reverb gives the organ an interesting sound. Thanks
Oh my .. what a beautiful resonance for a small organ and an incredible space! Nicely done brothers!
This song always moves a lot. Thanks for touching her, Jonathan. I remembered the funeral of my dear father and my grandparents. Miss them... 😢🙏🎶🎹❤️🙋🏻♀️

Thank you Jonathan, so beautiful, this will be my new favour ❤🇫🇮
My grandad would often play this piece when he was an organist. I miss hearing him play.
Beautiful!
Your videos are always stunning! Brilliant performances of the music, showcasing the amazing organs you play them on, and your brother capturing the highlights and beauty of the location!
Ineffable….
I'm in tears....
I had this beautiful song played in a small church at the most difficult moment... goodbyes.
