Funny thing about bringing a second pencil for the trombones. I always have 5, maybe 6 pencils because the trombone section in my band is so lazy. Love your channel!
I'm sure it would make it stinky over time. If I've not brushed my teeth before playing, I like to chew some sugarless gum like blue Orbit, and if I've just brushed I often chew on some before playing anyway.
One thing I have is quite a few band-aids in various sizes. I cut my finger one night and got blood over my horn. They fit nicely in a zip lock bag and don't take up much room. Very handy if you need it. For klutz's like me.
i was packing one time at night and stabbed my finger so bad i needed stiches. i had a first aid kit in my things and patched myself up. always remember to be ready for anything.
What's that thing you use to fix the dropped mouthpiece? My students have this great tendency to dent their backbores, so being able to fix that would be very nice. Where can I get one?
Philippe Kinnaer It is a mouthpiece truing tool. www.wwbw.com/DEG-Mouthpiece-Trueing-Tool-420178-420178000000000.wwbw?source=TWWR5J1BB&cntry=us¤cy=usd&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1rnn4fSk4AIVkv5kCh2NSgGIEAQYASABEgK37_D_BwE
Hi Jon, love your channel and your playing. I was wondering what the mic is that you carry with you. Do you have a go-to preference for wired mics? Also, how do you feel about wireless set-ups? Thanks, Steve
I carry a SM 57 or similar mic. There are 2 reasons for this. The first is: this style mic ensures that I can use my sound back. As I told a sound man on a recent gig, “I love you but I don’t trust you”. My experience with playing with different bands in different venues and different sound men is I use my sound back all the time. There is no guarantee that the sound man will give you anything close to what you need in the monitor. This set up gives me feed back and I might survive the gig if there is no monitor or it is dead. The second is for dynamics and proximity effect. If I am playing a second Bone part, Yep there are cases when this can happen I can lean in a bit and play the lower part softer and get a sound closer than that if I did not have this option. All that aside. AMT Mic with a wireless pack and Weston in ears. You may find in ears with ambient mics are a good option so you can balance you and the band yourself. The ears thing is a wave of the future and can be very good but there is a learning curve. How well the ears work relies on a very good sound engineer or your own mixing console. This set up is best used in a band you always play with and the same sound man or a gig in the same venue night after night. Final thing is clip mic will need to be removed or rotated out of the way when placing the horn on a stand. Please do not let any of this discourage you from trying a wireless set up. It might be the best thing ever for you and your situation. Best, Jon
Thanks so much for your reply! I know what you mean about the reliable sm57 and especially problematic monitor mixes. On nights that I feel really gassed, it is usually because of my overplaying because I can't hear myself properly. I may look into that feedback disc for shows where I am not using my in ears. My main gig is playing bass in a regional party band, and we have a regular sound engineer and use in ear monitors. We also use a Behringer X32-Q board, which allows me to dial in my own monitor mix with my iPad- it's awesome! I also use (sometimes) a Shure Beta 98 wireless. It sounds great and gives me some mobility on stage, but once it's set on my trumpet, that's it. I still use a wired mic for when I switch to my flugelhorn. When the horn goes on the stand, I clip the mic on one of the braces. I just have to leave enough slack in the cable between the mic and transmitter to allow me to do it. Thanks for sharing your experiences and opinions about those options. I appreciate your time.
What do you omit when you have a gig that needs mutes? Or do you then carry a separate mute bag? Thanks for all your fabulous videos. I refer students to them all the time!

Will Johnson I have 2 pencils is my trombone case
why do you need a pencil for a trombone? i own a trombone and dont understand this? to transpose the music sheet and write on it?
This video is good in so many ways, it has made my whole week.
I agree about killer dance moves!!! 😅😂
This is a true representation of what I carry and it is meant to be a fun video. Glad you had a laugh.
Jon
The ending is spectacular!
Thanks for your videos, They're really helping me, in so many ways
+Enrico Farnedi I liked it too I thought it was an interesting way to end a video. Best, Jon
+Rufftips Can an instrument get damaged if you play it having bad breath?

Thank you I let Chris know his efforts were appreciated.
That is funny. I like my old school case I ride a motorcycle and this case straps to the bike well and protects my horn.
Jon, I don't remember what the hell I deleted here, but this video is great. and the play off music is classic!
Thanks Jon! Much appreciated, have a good one!

The trumpet in this video is the prototype to the Stomvi-USA V-raptor.

Where can I get a “goody” bag like that
Trumpet Boi Check it sporting good stores, they sell small dry bags that work really well. You could also possibly find a bike bag that would work.
