@MarjaMariachi according to Shigeru Miyamoto (the "dad" of Mario), Bob-ombs don't turn into Boos when they blow up and die, so I doubt P-Switches do that either 😅😂

The creators of those crap levels are the ones with ‘low IQ’… the skilled level makers create expert/super expert maps. Normal is more amateur ie spamming 10k of something.

Normal is harder than Super Expert.
@@slyctonbits I think they just have more of those "unfair" deaths and stops. They aren't hard like those super Kaizo shell jumps so they only get you once and you know what to avoid, vs some of the super expert obstacles which will mill lives away.
Expert has the best levels IMO. A lot of them have good design with a decent challenge

I mean,, it's not really 'Normal' if he's going to give himself 1 life per run is it? That's harder than Expert because you still don't know what's coming round the corner but that's usually the one hardest thing of the level.
That all time choke on the lava level was hilarious. Edit: Never mind, the true choke came later on, lol.

Ryu's IQ is too high for these levels. He's always trying to avoid trolls and tight timers and get powerups as far as he can. But it screws him over because he ignores stuff that "normal" players would do without thinking.

Exactly. He needs to think like a normal-level player: grab every power-up, defeat every enemy
I mean, most of the times he died were to straight up bad level design. Like requiring a certain powerup with no way to know that ahead of time, and blocking your ability to go back and get it once you know you need it. Or the last level, where you literally have to be pressing right as soon as the level loads or you miss the platform. These kinds of bad design aren't as big a deal when you have multiple lives, but they're still garbage.
@@jasongarman Bad level design, yes. But the type of mistakes he's making aren't the mistakes a newer player would normally make.
Like not killing a Boom Boom with the star power. Ryu was probably trying to get the star through quickly to cheese something, but he lost for it.
Or like holding right at the start. A lot of new players will hold right at the beginning because that's how traditional levels work. That's why troll levels punish you for it so often.
These aren't well-designed levels, but I think Ryu would survive more of them if he tried to act like a newer player.
Ryu does not have a high IQ. Far, far from it.

What's sad about this is that so many of these deaths could have been avoided by just slowing down a little and spending a couple more seconds examining the situation. And then the last level screwed him because he did so. xD

Normal difficulty: It's when you lose not because of the lack of skill, but a terrible game (level) design.

eh, ryu made a number of stupid decisions. like, who runs thru that many stars, collecting keys from dead enemies, and doesn't make sure they kill every enemy on the way down?

normal is a strange beast
No, it's when you die mostly because you're not paying attention and you're rushing through.
Maybe I'm alone here but sometimes the normal levels appear to be harder because they're so random and badly made. With endless monster spam and no indicators on anything. And at times super expert levels merely require some preordained knowledge that a greater majority of players merely lack.
And if you know how to do all the crazy Mario tech that the level requires it's merely a walk in the park.
Maybe it's simply my experience but it really does feel this way.

Half of his deaths came from rushing or overanticipating what's expected of you.
Normal levels are normal because not a lot of people have died in them (and a few other unknown variables). Mario Maker players are mostly children, so if there's a gimmicky way to die on easy or normal, it's gonna be found fast and it's gonna kill a lot. So if you're playing normal, it's okay to mostly trust the level, and if you find a spot where what you think you need to do is a little crazy, it's probably not what you're intended to do.
I used to play a lot of normal levels with my little brother and the amount of times I saw a part and expected I needed to do a shell jump or crazy combination of movements only for him to walk through and do it on the first try with something really simple is just too much to count.
Take a deep breath, take your time, learn to trust a little, firm your control over Mario, and Normal levels shouldn't be a problem.
(To be clear, I don't mean every death. "Easy Level?" for instance is just in Normal because it's an idea that most won't die twice to. It would also help if he'd skip some, since the challenge doesn't appear to be no skip?)

Great video, Ryu! A lot of these deaths were you skipping something that a "newbie" would do, because it's in normal mode.

most of these deaths were pretty clearly ryu's fault.
Normal has it's own weird difficulty in that you have to assume that the maker is assuming things about the player. It would never occur to an inexperienced maker that someone might miss a powerup because they prefer the other one, so they don't think about making it mandatory somehow. It's like a troll meta except on accident.

This collection of levels was honestly so bizarre. Most brain-meltingly short (so, on the whole easy) but I have to say it's really nice to see people's minds be so creative and inspired for some of them =)
I think the reason this challenge is so hard is because Normal levels tend to be kind of easyish garbage levels where you die once and then get the clear, whereas Expert and above levels tend to actually be well made levels that are just difficult, so the random deaths in Normal levels are harder to avoid than the skill based deaths in Expert.

I realise how old this video is, but it's great to see Ryu dying on normal mode. Makes me think I'm not actually completely terrible at this game! It does seem odd which levels get put into which categories sometimes.
I really like this video because you’re actually restarting once you fail the challenge. It hardly feels like a challenge if you continue anyway like in some of the previous videos.

Maybe it wasn't over. We're seems to be a glitch that lets you enter sideways pipes as you take damage. You could time a bomb, throw it up that use the boot to jump to the pipe and get hit by the explosion to enter the pipe. I don't know if it's possible (timing) and it would be super hard.
Get in touch with DGR, I'm sure he can give you some pointers on how to beat levels on this difficulty 👍😁

Alternative title: Can Ryu beat 4 normal levels? This was more fun to watch than I anticipated. Even when the unbelievable happens, it's also nice to chill back a bit.

Not exactly, it's just ryu won't take his time, so he ends up getting softlocked. Too many SE Levels with pointless boss battles will do it to ya.

I feel like endless normal without dying should be a category along with super expert no skip. It just feels like its own thing and the balance of it makes it truly intense and exciting.
