    Thanks for sharing a great way to pollinate. I did pollinate a few of mine to keep the strain true, I used rubber bands to keep the flowers closed. It seemed to work just fine, but your paper slips are so much more "gentle". Some I left to pollinate on their own and got a strange load of winter squash that were def. cross bred, thanks again Dave.

      You are very welcome Aaron :)
      RUclips is just great. So many videos that show how it is done. These days one can learn a lot from books, but I just love seeing how to fix my car from someone on RUclips, as it is less complicated somehow.

    Breeding vegetables, and making own varieties is real fun.

    thanks my squash just started to flower and there aren't too many blooming wildflowers near by or planted flowers. This really helps a lot, and I should have some heirloom tomato seeds to share on the website by December as well as maybe a few more heirloom fruits/veggies.

    This is a cool article, because just now I have a unique new winter squash in my own garden. Last year my giant pumpkin pollinated a Burgess buttercup squash. One seedling came up directly out of the center of the old buttercup fruit, and this one flourished. The biggest fruit is now 12" across and still growing, is shaped like a slightly flattened pumpkin, with a "button" on the blossom end like a buttercup squash, and though it's yellow/orange all over, the grooves from the stem end have green in them, and the blossom end has a little green. They're really beautiful so far, and I'm hoping for excellent eating qualities... If so, I'm saving the seeds...

    • @workwithnature
      @workwithnature  10 лет назад

      Hey that is exciting that you have something new. Just make sure the giant pumpkin was a pepo too :( Normally giant pumpkins are maxima and as far as I know the squash is a pepo. But in any case sounds like you have something interesting and worth having fun with. If you like you can share the seeds over on heirloomseedsaving even better if you would like to show case it on the forum with some pictures. Would love to see it.
      Thanks for your post.
      Best wishes David.

    this was more of a hand pollination video to me although you did explain briefly what can be crossed with what but I was expecting (based on title) more demonstration of you mixing different varieties of plants together and what they produced. Still informational though. Thanks for your posts.

    • @workwithnature
      @workwithnature  10 лет назад

      Well in a way you might be right :)
      The out come of what you could expect, when you cross plants would be so varied and difficult, that making a video on it would take several years of filming. For me it would be interesting, but I felt, people should try making their own crosses and then see it first hand on their own plants.
      To me the title is OK as it explains the heart of it. The flowers and how to pollinate and isolate them. How to select for taste. How to cross what with what. But you are correct I did not put everything into the video. It is hard at times, as otherwise the video would end up a full length movie. But thanks for the feed back hey.
      Best wishes David.

      Have you done any crosses? If you do in the future might make a good mini-series and I don't get out much so I don't mind full length feature films on gardening :D

    • @workwithnature
      @workwithnature  10 лет назад +1

      Natural Jersey Girl
      Nope I am engaged with the subject at work and have a keen interest in saving seeds, creating seed libraries + making new useful vegetable varieties and of course organic gardening. I am very fortunate to have two very nice seed breeders at work, but also have played around with it in the past. I will try at some point to incorporate more results, as we do have a lot of plants that are showing the differences you mentioned. But for now I am just focused on making a series on showing the steps, on how to make the actual crosses. But thanks for your feed back and interest.
      Best wishes David.

    Im studying horticulture in Ireland and im just curious what is your profession, are you a seed breeder or is this just a hobby? sorry for the personal question. Thanks

    • @workwithnature
      @workwithnature  10 лет назад +9

      Sure you can ask, but you might not like the answer :)
      No I was never good in school. Am actually dixlexic and terrible at book learning, or for that matter remembering stuff I can never apply to real life. Or stuff I never wanted to learn in the first place :) At least that has been my experience in the past. But I have been interested in gardening since I am four. My Father was into growing food and my Mother used to collect wild herbs for medicine. My profession is as a Landscape gardener and I also worked on a permaculture farm for 5 years. Now I went for a job in a seed saving company and enjoying it immensely. So you can see by that it is my profession and I am lucky enough to have an excellent training. Certified by very happy plants ;)
      Best wishes David.

    Why would you pollination with the same plant? For diversity a different plant should be used. Would you pollination yourself like Obama?
