    Whats soo fucked up about this film is after decades of watching Coen brother's movies, now all of a sudden we realize Joel was carrying 90% of the load. Amazing.

    Even the trailer for this looked awful. One thing that stood out to me is that they didn't even advertise "By Ethan Coen." They said "By one of the Coen Brothers." I was like "Why take the extra effort to clarify that it isn't both?"

    • @tobylerone4285

      I think that was more to get the Coen Brothers brand in there even though it was only one of them. Don’t forget, Etan Coen made Garfield, so this is a better clarification, especially if you’re Bill Murray

    I do need to clarify that if I didn’t have regal unlimited, I wouldn’t have seen this movie and a bunch more. That being said, I like this movie. The trailer was misleading tho. Short movie, comedic, and I did like the two leads. The transitions were good, I actually enjoyed them, reminded me of that 70’s show mix with Scott pilgrim. Adam and I are almost always on the same page but disagree on this one. Nice review.

    Man, the main chick was so annoying. She kept on going on soliloquies every single scene, talking a mile a minute and using the weirdest sayings ever. This is the kinda stuff you get used to after a while, but the problem is she's the only character who talks like this throughout the entire film.

    I genuinely could not tell if they were doing a form of meta commentary or not because of the ridiculous lesbian sexual scenes. When the "coach" said to, "Rotate", I honestly wondered if certain Coen was emotionally hurt by a lesbian in irl.

    around a lot, the leads were trying but it just was pretty bad, Agree with all your points, Thought it might be raunchy fun but wasn’t even fun or interesting.

    I just watched this movie and it was unwatchable. I find both the actresses hot and was expecting a sexy movie. It's not sexy at all. It's raunchy in the worst way, it's unfunny, it's extremely violent. But the violence is in the first scene against a person you don't know so you don't care. Just terrible.

    Just watched it last night.... This feels like a Coen cousin movie. Very "college film" feel to it, the foundation of an idea is there but not fully developed and realized. Miss Qualley went "Full R-tard" with her role, her character should have been a little more grounded to make it believable. No sense of Danger. We almost walked out, but wanted to give the movie the benefit..... I am sorry we did.

  • @PredatorTruffleShuffle
    @PredatorTruffleShuffle 2 years ago +14

    The Coen Brothers are my all time favorite filmmakers, absolute legends in the industry, with a handful of their movies being my all time favorite films. Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, Fargo, Raising Arizona, O Brother Where Art Thou, and No Country fo Old Men are my absolute favorites, and I have watched them 20-30 times a piece in my life easily. I had a strong feeling that this was going to be bad after watching the trailer, and it's massively disappointing to see the downfall of a once incredible director. He said he wants to make a "Lesbian Trilogy," if this is a success, so I hope it bombs so hard. It's sucks so much that the Coens are done making movies together, and apparently are done making good movies as well. It's definitely an end of an era for cinema, and it's heartbreaking.
    RIP Coen Bros. 😢

    Great review, but I was kinda hoping for a Chris Stuckman parody review. "First and formost I have to say the cast and crew did a fine job, the wonderful director and editor were obviously hamstring by a meddling studio"

    • @tobylerone4285
      @tobylerone4285 2 years ago +1

      Thing is, Stuckman ain’t wrong; a lot of the time big budget films are ground into dust by executives because they have a lot of money riding on that shit and want total control. The problem is, as a critic you can’t exactly review a production; so why doesn’t he just criticise the films while still making the point this was likely all induced by a tyrannical, creatively-cauterised studio system that is too scared to let it’s creatives be actually creative?

    Maybe it’s because I’m a big Coen brothers fan but, although it’s very light and very silly I did enjoy it for the most part. I thought the main two characters were pretty likeable and I wanted to be on their side. And yeah, comedy is subjective but I thought the dialogues were pretty funny for the most part. Some of the elements in the plot were, as I said, very silly and very vulgar and it’s not like I loved those elements but I didn’t hate them, cause it fitted with Margaret Qualley’s character. It’s not a great movie, but it is decent as a light comedy. Also, there is a bit of commentary. Kind of broad, but there is a clear amount of elements related to the “conservative” point of view, so to speak.

Such a horrible film , with gratuitous lesbian sex scenes and puerile humour that might appeal to teenage boys but nothing for us in it. I thought the movie was pretty good, but I definitely understand if you walked away feeling that it was lackluster. It had all of the makings of a John Waters film and it had a pretty decent plot and set up. It could definitely be revised and made for a really good Quentin Tarantino film either. But yeah, I wish that there could’ve been more to the chase and this film, it was really Anti-climatic in some areas.
    But I did enjoy the film in terms of just seeing a film feature two lesbian characters, exploring their relationship together and getting closer. And that’s something that you don’t see a lot. So any film that features lesbians as the main character gets at least a B+ for me

    Sadly I watched this last because of Ethan Coen's name. It is the worst film I've ever seen. I have never had a voice grate on me so bad as the character by Margaret Qualley. Her voice and fake accent actually angered me. And what was with that endless, no dialog, psychedelic scene? This should have been edited to a sixty minute film. Then it would have been the worst sixty minute film in recent history.

    Miserable to sit though? This movie was quirky in the vein of raising Arizona and big Lebowski. The motion graphics trippy scenes were distracting yes, but performances from the Margaret Qualley, beanie feldstein, and Geraldine vishwanathan were great. If a raunchy sex comedy featuring lesbians is not your thing that’s ok. But watching madam web again instead of an original story is just a stretch too far in my opinion.

    I loved this film! I love the chemistry Margaret and Geraldine have.

    Id like to know who the target audience for this was well cause it sure as hell wasn't for the lesbians. Pretty sure not a single lesbian was involved in the writing of this film.

    I thought ppl were walking out of the movie cause of homophobia, but after watching it was like, this movie is just bad. As a queer person i wanted a funny lesbian comedy so bad. It was nothing of the sort...

    Madame web was more enjoyable than this. Granted madame web was hilarious on accident but drive away dolls is a comedy that isn't funny or entertaining.

    This film doesn't exist. It wasn't ever made. As such I'm baffled as to how you're reviewing something that doesn't exist.

    I agree it's a really bad movie. Very very crude. Idk if they were being PC for the lesbian community, but they did them no favors at all.

    Adam is so angry about this movie because he's afaid of how lesbians are taking women away from him. And he's right.

      Congrats. Also thought this movie was ass. Watched it after The Substance to see some more Margaret Qualley acting prowess. I wish I had not lol. What a waste of talent.

    I don't think I've enjoyed a Coen Bros movie since "No Country for Old Men." Their early career was hit-or-miss, but they really nose-dived during the past few decades.

      A Serious Man and Inside Llewyn Davis are two of the best American films of this century. And I love Hail, Caesar, but it is the type of quirky comedy that turns some people off.

    Comparing this movie to Madame Web seems a bit harsh. I enjoyed my brief time with it, but my biggest complaint would be that it’s a bit derivative of better Coen Brother movies. We even had discount Steve Buscemi playing Buscemi’s part from Fargo

      @Pleasebeserious-25 The original post says nothing. Telling me I didn't understand the film and ending with a smug "lmao' is absolutely pointless. If they want to expand on what I actually didn't understand, I would love to hear it. Instead, the comment is vague and insulting so I gave a equally pithy reply. I love talking movies and hearing other opinions. Simply stating that I fundamentally don't understand something with no backing is equal to saying nothing at all.
