Another community that had an incredible history in Patagonia were the Boers from South Africa who arrived in Chubut on June 4, 1902, escaping from the Anglo-Boer War and founded Colonia Escalante and in 1907 while drilling for water they found oil, which Years later, the national oil company would give rise to YPF.
Although the Boers were never as numerous as the Welsh in Patagonia (since many returned to South Africa), the communities living in Sarmiento, Comodoro Rivadavia and Rada Tilly still conserve their language, "Afrikaans" and never claimed or had anything to do with it. with the Apartheid period in South Africa
In 2015, the documentary "The Boers at the End of the World" was released, telling their story.

It harks back a long time to Methodist religion which was strong in Wales, the West Country and Yorkshire, UK. The Chaqel organised social days where everyone was encouraged to qerform something - if not sing then recite a qoem or read out loud. That develoqed in some areas to a larger cultural event and comqetitive show but even in the 1950's my Mum, as a child in the welsh Marches, enjoyed the local Methodist events. They took that tradition with them to {atagonia it seems and a jolly good idea it is too for confidence building in children and develop[ing social skills. Children also had to learn [oems off by heart in school and recite with inflection and emotion - my Dad can still remember some of The Ancient Mariner! :)

I was just curious about the cultural context of poetry in welsh. I'm argentinian and poetry would not come to mind if I thought about important aspects of our culture. So that contrasts what is shown here. He travels half a world away, and his way of engaging with the patagonian welsh culture is through poetry, which suggests to me that this medium is culturally important to the welsh. But maybe that's a misunderstanding on my part.
And I didn't know poetry recitation was something that could be made into a competition, so that's new to me haha
