Our Classics master, Ted Norrish, had a moustache like John Cleese. He even sounded a little like Cleese. Ted had got tickets to the Aldwych Theatre to see an all day trilogy of plays called The Greeks. On the day he was unable to accompany us, a small group of 6th Form A-Level classics students. He asked us to try & sell the tickets he'd not been able to interest more students to buy. We sold those to people in the queue, sold our tickets too and with the proceeds went to see this new film in Leicester Square! The scene where the Roman centurion finds Brian daubing the temple with 'People called Romans, they go, the house' was terrifying (he looked & sounded just like Ted Norrish & the Latin grammar corrections are spot on) - it felt like Ted somehow knew what we'd done & was in the film! We slunk down in our seats & looked at each other open-mouthed. It's been one of my favourite films ever since.

***** I was looking at DVD and VCR players in a second hand store and found a tape of Monty Python life of Brian in one of the VCR's so I bought the player just because of that tape even though I got a player already!
John Barb George and Eric were bff's since they were kids, so he helped out with some of the Monty Python songs. Etc, he wrote this song. George also produced the Lumberjack Song and secretly performed it live dressed as 1 of the mounties.
Back to say this is even funnier when you remember that it follows on a hard cut from Mandy, Brian's mother, smacking the crying infant Brian in his cradle and telling him to shut up after the wise men have come back into their manger, grabbed the gifts back, and headed off to the manger down the street with the bright star hanging over it.
Quite possibly the funniest movie ever filmed, and more importantly so because of its irreverance. God bless all the Pythons, and toss in Carol Cleveland and Neil Innes!
I've always loved this intro and the song. I remember creasing up at the dramatic 'He had arms, and legs...and hands! And feet!' Wow! Sounds like we got a hero on our hands if he has all those accomplishments to his credit! Also, particularly when I see this sequence, you realise how much of an influence Gilliam had on Matt Stone and Trey Parker on South Park. Particularly in the early days, when in fact all Python was an influence, although they have moved away from that more these days.
Definitely the best opening credits of any film. The Pythons broke the mould with their groundbreaking often surreal comedy and paved the way for all to follow after them,League of gentlemen,Little Britain etc!
Life of Brian is one of my favorite Monty Python flicks around and this intro simply EPIC animated intros ever made. LOVE IT TO PIECES! RIP - GRAHAM CHAPMAN - You will always be our Brian. GREAT VID!
Most of the musical score is done by Eric Idle. The man is the "folk singer" on the group. But this song was written by Michael Palin. And of course, all the effects are Gilliam's. Collage is his bread, butter and cheese. Beautiful....
Terry Gilliam, the guy who animated this was the only member of Monty Python not born in GB, he was born in America I don't really care about this (probably not you either) but i just wanted to spitt out some facts
I love how this two-plus minutes says more about the human condition than most VRY SRS films do in two-plus hours. We plummet and ricochet through life, our screams unheard or unheeded. lol.
There's so many things I love about this. Firstly with the first seconds with the intro, the nicked the idea from Ben Hur, which I live the idea to do so. After which the animations are both stunning and hilarious, considering they were done in the mid 1970s. When I first saw this, I laughed my head off during the intro because it gave me the impression that the developpers were saing "You know everything you learnt in history class at school? Even the boring stuff? F*** it and let's play with it". The lyrics are equally hilarious, like "He had arms... and legs... and hands... and feet", it gives the impression that it's a miracle, something to feel proud about, among other things. Also the fact that the singer, Sophie Jones, was only 16 years old when she sang this, so hats off to her for her amazing performance and the ability not to laugh at what she sang. All in all a superb start to an underrated classic
That 16 year old Sonia Jones was able to sound like Shirley Bassey (as this was clearly a take off - and a brillant one - of the theme to Goldfinger) is amazing. Great chord sequences. Still - 16 eh...nudge nudge wink wink...
That's a hell of a singer ....I read Sonya was just 16 when she did the vocal ... She sounds like Shirley Bassey in her prime the top notes don't just get hit their Rugby Tackled.....
Ruth Gonzalez Her name is Sonia Jones, and she was 16 at the time according to her site. I suppose her parents either weren't paying attention or weren't phased by the lyrics saying that Brian wanted to "have one off at the wrist."
This is still hysterical.....40 plus years on..Shirley Bassey sound alike ..actually is just as good if not better...the films beginning is a great foretaste
In most films the credits are when you nip out to make yourself a cup of tea. Here you're torn between listening to the song or watching the Gilliam annimation.
It's still so weird to me to think of a Monty Python production being... like, a PRODUCTION. I'm so used to all their stuff looking like it was made for pocket change, to the point that it's almost part of the joke (or at least less of a distraction from the jokes themselves). At the same time, I always find it cool when someone who's worked really well with low budgets in the past is basically told "Do that again, but this time, let someone else worry about money." Smiling Friends is a good recent example of that, IMO.
This really sounds familiar to 007(which film i forgot, must be recent with daniel craig though), Django Unchained openings and Snake eater of Metal Gear solid 3.
Sonia Jones sang the theme song. Like Shirley Bassey, she also came from Wales (often referred to as the land of song), as did Charlotte Church, Tom Jones, Duffy, Iris Williams, Bonny Tyler and many others.
The greatest James Bond theme that never was.
This and The Incredibles theme. Lol
Just imagine if James bond was actually called Brian but nobody would take him seriously until he changed his name
Sounds like a mix between "Diamonds Are Forever" intro and "Django" intro.

LIFE OF BRIAN
Perfect animation by Terry Gilliam!
I know its a jokey song but its still epic in its own right.
True Story
Totally agree.
Gahhh, isn't it!!!!! Love this f'n shit m8yt3!! Goosebumps city on the Nostalgia expressway lol
The bery vest of Mad Dog I'm pissing myself laughing so hard now🤣

I'M THE MESSIAH AND SO IS MY WIFE!!!
okay okay I am the messiah now fuck off!
"He is the Messiah, I should know, I followed a few."
I sang this for my friend's birthday today. His name is Brian.
+Katie The Prog Bulldog I wish I knew some Brian to do the same XD
+Katie The Prog Bulldog i sang it for my friend's birthday today. It's name was Bonita.
lolwhat yesme Is she a portuguese language native? Bc her name means 'beautiful' in that language.
+Loana Guedes It's a doll that I abuse. It's located underneath my bed. I sometimes rub up against it.
Katie The Prog Bulldog did he cringe, cause that sounds very cringe worthy
This sounds like a 007 song. I adore it!
Yeah, probably Goldfinger.
Aitor Molina Python purposely wanted it Bond-esque. I’d say they succeeded.
Sounds a lot like James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” as well
Life Of Brian The Movie 📺
A bit of Goldfinger and some license to Kill :)
Apparently, Sonia Jones, the singer, was only 16 at the time. Pretty impressive for that age.
William Spurr I think that was the idea; it's supposed to be a send-up of James Bond theme song
16 year old works con an R rated film.
I know it's not that big of a deal but in my neighborhood the are aghast if a 12 year old curses.
