Romancing Saga 2 is my personal game of the year. It's a 30 year old design, that still feels fresh and modern, and with the modernized gameplay and such, it finally got to shine the way it deserved. I admit it might not be the best game that came out this year...but I'd say it was both the biggest achievement, making this game work as well as it does, and also the one I had the best expectations-vs-experience results with, because I was both hopeful yet also cautious about it, and they managed to deliver on all I hoped for, and nothing I worried about. That made it my personal GOTY.
2024 was an insane year for RPGs, to the point that gems like Grandblue fantasy, romancing sage, metal slug, Ys X, etc can be considered this year underdogs
Dude, you are on fire! I've been watching a new video of yours nearly every day and it's always worthwhile! Great list I'll save to check out as I chisel down the games I'm working on. Still going strong with DQ 3, but Fantasian, Ys Nordics, and Granblue are also on the docket currently.
I really appreciate when you make those kind of videos. I'm fairly up-to-date with video games releases and you always surprise me with at least 3 or 4 games I've never heard of.
Granblue is SO underrated this year. One of the most fun and concise stories we've gotten all year and there's so much content to complete if you want to.
Finally someone did what was necessary and I’m not surprised it was David. Everybody’s got me tired talking about Metaphor, Rebirth, P3R etc. there were so many other RPG bangers this year.
Love the male character hotness review. Please always point out this great gameplay feature in future videos, because I will be making purchasing decisions based on this
Secret of Varonis and Scarmonde are my two favorites from this year. They built upon my nostalgia for the older games very well. I'll be trying out Bloomtown for Christmas break so thank you for the recommendation.
I'm really excited for the Fairy Tail 2 game. But a few games I feel that are getting neglected due to either bad media or just other games coming out later are Stellar Blade, Dragon's Dogma 2 and Persona 3 reload. I just feel they didn't get the recognition they deserved.
I really appreciate the attention to Megaton Musashi, is really fun. Now I'll wait for a port for Beloved rapture to switch, so I can play in my bed, And Romancing saga 2 remake is some of the best I've played, I want another remake of the other games in that style.
2024 was THE year of the RPG and seeing David highlight 20 of them flying under the radar makes it even more evident that we were overstuffed with them. And next year will be the year of the RPG remakes/masters.
Awesome video! Would love a part 2 if you have anymore! Visions of Mana is totally an underrated game of the year! Grandblue Relink is totally a hidden gem of 2024
Was not expecting the FF Mystic Quest boss battle theme, totally forgot about this song and it's such a banger! Great video, got some of these on my radar because of this video!
Hahaha, yes! Glad you went through with the Granblue Fantasy description, because you're definitely not wrong about those men 😎 Awesome list my man, definitely some games on here I wasn't aware of and will check out!
Great choices of music here! And a great choice of thumbnail lol The thing I don't like about the YS series is how they keep going into the past, I think it would be much more interesting if each game was a sequel, like it used to be and we see him grow older and change. Also would be nice to see a couple returning characters and villains sometimes, linking each game together a bit more instead of making each thing a totally separate story. Not to the extent of the Trails series though where there's a ton of returning characters and almost no villains actually die, making the members of Ouroboros seem like the annoying Jessie and James from Pokemon ather than a genuine threat. Constantly returning villains that never get killed aren't threatening or interesting, but if YS brought back a villain from an older game that returned one time in an unexpected way that could be interesting, or maybe even a character that was good in a previous game and is now a villain with a deep reason for it, giving Adol an emotional struggle as well as a physical one. Given your orientation I'd expect to see some guy thumbnails too, not that I'm complaining of course but wondered why that was? Perhaps girl thumbnails get more attention for some reason?
Witch Spring R is pretty underrated and still niche, but I'm glad it at least got 1M sales on the console release. I really hope it brings people to look at WS3R, now THAT game is underrated and a hidden gem because people a lot of people dismiss it too early for its mobile origins thinking it's a mere port instead of a remake.
Mystic Quest battle themen👂👏 Game was my 1st rpg game as a kid, It did it's job of getting me into rpg games. Understand why it gets made fun of today but I would replay it for just the music and childhood memories
Fairy Tale 2 is giving me major 3D Dragon Quest vibes, not surprised you'd like it. The Granblue blurb was hilarious, I had to rewatch it immediately! "If you're into that sort of thing" classic David delivery 😂
2024 was absolutely fantastic for JRPGs! Actually hard to beat in terms of quantity and quality. Also had to laugh out loud for your segment about Granblue Fantasy Relink 🤣
Got Saga Emerald and Tokyo Xanadu, still waiting for my Fantasian and Metal Slug Tactic order. I think I picked up enough games this year. Thank you for the list, David 👍
Your review of Granblue got me 😄 just another reason why I'm subscribed to your channel! I do love your honest reviews and love for some good ol' RPGs ❤
Sounds like either Rueben's Theme or something from the fireburg area from Mystic Quest. *edit* japanese version of soundtrack has it listed as Rock Theme.
This list is choice, gonna have to pick up several of these I missed. My big sleeper for the year is actually the "Egg Console" collection of games on the Switch. They're all straight ports of PC88 and MSX rpgs and adventure games that we didn't get in the west, or only got severely modified. Ys 1-3, Golvellius, Dragon Slayer, even the painfully obscure sequel to Miracle Warriors (and the list is growing). It's rough that they're all untranslated, but for the most hardcore weebs it's solid gold. Keep it up brother, we're all looking forward to that silver play button unboxing.
David! This is like a Christmas gift for us viewers and for me. 2024 had a lot of games released and I only knew some of these on the list. Both saga games this year were great and I got the demo download to enjoy. I wanna play some of the indie games especially Flowstone Saga - RPG + Tetris = hell yeah!! I want to play a lo too these titles!
It’s not exactly a jrpg but it’s tangentially related, but Kunitsu-gami is suuuuuper good and overlooked. It’s not the most niche game of all time or anything but it’s super unique and beautiful. If you were on the fence there’s a demo that’s pretty lengthy or just wait till it goes on sale but it’s worth.
"it has women too, if you're into that sorta thing." LOL ok subscribe ai've seen you a couple of times in Alex's vids but this line is what made me finally sub
I would say Skald : Against the Black Priory would be my most underated RPG this year by far, prbably way more than most on this list. The characters might be a little cliché, but the story is excellent, especialy at the end of the first isle and onward.
We are in an RPG renaissance right now though I did see a couple of games like goblin slayer on this list that you kind of said were trash once before David, but there was something like Joanne of Ark that I had back on PSP. I didn’t know came out this year so you know I gotta pick that up man. Thanks again for the hard work!
Super agree on the Ys X though, you'd think it'd be more popular by now with how good the series is especially ys8. Looking forward to starting Romancing Saga 2 ROTS sooner or later. Still have a ton of games I started or got midway then suddenly dropped for another game
I want to make a indie game. I have started but game development is lot of work. Hopefully I can buckle down and finish it and sell it to the masses. I need to be working on it a lot more than I have been.
I cancelled my pre-order for Elrentaros Wanderings and exchanged it for Ys Memoires Oath In Felghana. I have no plans of buying Elrentaros Wanderings anymore, but since you think it's underrated, I'm thinking of picking it up on a deep sale and giving it a shot. I'm a fan of Rune Factory after all, so I've been doing my best to support Rune Factory games and new IPs from Yoshifumi Hashimoto and Minako Iwasaki (RF artist). Speaking of Yoshifumi Hashimoto, have you heard about his new work? Progress Orders. It seems interesting. Battle system seems to lean towards Etrian Odyssey and you basically play as a guild master or something? It's slated to come out 2025 I think
I'm a sucker for good Indie RPGs with throw back inspiration like The Secret of Varonis, Beloved Rapture, Scarmonde. I love the 16 bit look of Flowstone Saga and I do enjoy Tetris games.

Yea the fact he had to knock this down to 20 is crazy. My favorite underrated gem is Sand Land.
Witch Spring R was my underrated fav! Absolutely fantastic and surprisingly deep story about a cute witch girl, what’s more to love
It really is a great game!
Nice FFMQ music. Love this banger list, best part was I have a chunk of these games. My favorites are definitely Scarmonde and Secret of Varonis.
This is the ultimate list!!! Keeping it saved so whenever I’m stuck on what to play, I can reference it!
I'm glad you found it helpful! It would make a great reference!

Beloved rapture looks right up my alley. Added to the backlog!
I really appreciate when you make those kind of videos. I'm fairly up-to-date with video games releases and you always surprise me with at least 3 or 4 games I've never heard of.
Glad to help you discover some hidden gems!
As a huge Fairy Tail fan I'm definitely getting it looks improved a lot from the first game
I'm thrilled to see so much love for Beloved Rapture in the comments!!
Thank you SO MUCH David for all the support you've shown that game
Of course! I’m happy to support such a good game!
Granblue is SO underrated this year. One of the most fun and concise stories we've gotten all year and there's so much content to complete if you want to.
It's got an 80/8.3 on metacritic, it's pretty appropriately rated
Underrated RPGs with David
Great picks David! I beat Flowstone Saga the other day absolutely loved it! Great battle system and shockingly great music.
Yeah it’s fantastic, I’m glad you enjoyed it Taylor!
Secret of Varonis sounds like a game made just for you! :) this year was STACKED with JRPGS
Beloved Rapture was so much fun. Thanks for covering it! Also, gotta love the Mystic Quest tunes...
Glad you enjoyed it!
3:57 😂 Thanks David I sure am haha
8:40 as an RPG Maker dev, I’m so happy to see you give this game some love
So what makes Gran Blue a good game?
David: HOT GUYS
Can't blame him
I do appreciate the Mystic Quest tracks throughout the video.
Underrated soundtrack. I wish they’d remake that game
Where can I play it? No remakes for 30 years is crazy!
Great video as always, David!
I appreciate you watching!
Adol & the Ys series will always have my respect
Rapture of the Beloved Knights
Finally someone did what was necessary and I’m not surprised it was David. Everybody’s got me tired talking about Metaphor, Rebirth, P3R etc. there were so many other RPG bangers this year.
So Glad to see Metal Slug Tactics here! Criminally underrated game!
Just started but God I love the Mystic Quest battle theme!
Unicorn Overlord is probably the best VanillaWare title ever and right up there with Fire Emblem's best moments..
Ys X and 8 Bit Adventures 2 both all time classics IMO. Been gaming since Dragon Warrior on the NES and these two were stand outs this year.
Love the male character hotness review. Please always point out this great gameplay feature in future videos, because I will be making purchasing decisions based on this
Haha! I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future videos!

Visions of Mana is totally an underrated game of the year! Grandblue Relink is totally a hidden gem of 2024
Immediately amazing music choice at the start of the video!
Was not expecting the FF Mystic Quest boss battle theme, totally forgot about this song and it's such a banger! Great video, got some of these on my radar because of this video!
Glad to help you discover some new RPGs!
Great video man. I really like seeing Indie games that deserve it get their chance to shine.
Love the mystic quest music in the backround
3:34 That is the type of review why I follow you
I played and really loved Beloved Rapture! Thanks for giving such a wonderful game so much positive coverage
It really is a great game!
Hahaha, yes! Glad you went through with the Granblue Fantasy description, because you're definitely not wrong about those men 😎 Awesome list my man, definitely some games on here I wasn't aware of and will check out!
Thanks so much my friend!
Love your videos David! Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
Great choices of music here! And a great choice of thumbnail lol

Appreciate the MQ music~
Using the mystic quest battle
Music really
Underscores the theme of the video! Well done
It was definitely a choice for the video!
What a ridiculously good year for JRPGs! Glad so many developers have been releasing games with actual quality and love put into them!
Also those FFMQ songs still absolutely SLAP! Great choice!
Clicked to support the channel, but stayed for the Mystic Quest music. ❤️🎃
Glad you recognized the track!
David with the Mystic Quest background music.
Bloomtown is such a great game!!
Megaton Musashi W basically hits all of the genres I'm interested in, and I haven't seen any advertisements for it at all.
Opening background music had me fighting a group of mint mints back in '93. Love it!
I’m glad you recognized the track!
Heck yeah, SCARMONDE!
Mystic Quest battle themen👂👏
Game was my 1st rpg game as a kid, It did it's job of getting me into rpg games. Understand why it gets made fun of today but I would replay it for just the music and childhood memories
Loving that the whole video sofar has music from the game ❤
Its reputation isn't really deserved. It actually succeeded in getting some kids (like me) into JRPGs before FFVII made them more mainstream
That Mystic Quest background music though 👌
Fairy Tale 2 is giving me major 3D Dragon Quest vibes, not surprised you'd like it. The Granblue blurb was hilarious, I had to rewatch it immediately! "If you're into that sort of thing" classic David delivery 😂
I'm glad you got a good chuckle out of that line!
Unicorn Overlord and GBF:R so far are my underrated games of the year, hoping the best for FT2 next week
Let's Go Awesome Video brother have a great day
You too, thanks for watching!
2024 was absolutely fantastic for JRPGs! Actually hard to beat in terms of quantity and quality.
Also had to laugh out loud for your segment about Granblue Fantasy Relink 🤣
It was my favorite part to write!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video david! Music is too loud tho
Thanks for letting me know! I'll adjust the volume in future videos!
Needed a video like this. Looking to expand from the big hitters.
Come on, David. I need to save money, not spend even more! (Just kidding)
Great video and I'll take note on some of these for thee future.
what is the name of the song playing at 5:08? It’s going to drive me insane, it’s on the tip of my tongue!
Sounds like either Rueben's Theme or something from the fireburg area from Mystic Quest.
*edit* japanese version of soundtrack has it listed as Rock Theme.
@@banedeathThat’s it, Rock Theme!! Thank you, seriously. This was a very cool notification to read after a long day at the office.
yo, shout out for the FFMQ OST in the background.
This list is choice, gonna have to pick up several of these I missed.

I haven’t heard of that collection but it sounds interesting!

What’s the song playing the background of the video? I love it. Keep up the content David. I 💜it
It’s a medley from Final Fantasy Mystic quest
Omg! Was totally digging the final fantasy mystic quest combat music from my childhood! ❤
Omg it just got better watching the video! Thank you David for the nostalgia blast! ❤
NGL, I completely forgot Baten Kaitos 1 and 2 came out this year.
Omg the Mystic Quest ost sooooo good, nostalgia hitting hard lol 🤣🤘
Chained Echoes was mine , music in that game was fcking insane, I still listen to those in the gym
"it has women too, if you're into that sorta thing." LOL ok subscribe ai've seen you a couple of times in Alex's vids but this line is what made me finally sub
Shogun Showdown.
Tactical card fighting beat em up roguelike. Sick music, and great style.
Man this year has been so packed I forgot some of these games came out this year lol
I would say Skald : Against the Black Priory would be my most underated RPG this year by far, prbably way more than most on this list. The characters might be a little cliché, but the story is excellent, especialy at the end of the first isle and onward.
The Mystic Quest music is healing my soul.
The Baten Kaitos re-releases are automatic not-buys as the English language track was removed.
As always. Another great list.
Glad you liked it!
I would absolutely love for them to do a remake/remaster of the Phantasy Star series.
No, I put out a full review on it and I said I enjoyed it
ah so much rpg goodness you love to see it
Super agree on the Ys X though, you'd think it'd be more popular by now with how good the series is especially ys8. Looking forward to starting Romancing Saga 2 ROTS sooner or later. Still have a ton of games I started or got midway then suddenly dropped for another game
They could release 20 more a year and I'd still be going through BoF 1 dungeon at a time for the next 6 months.
Is Granblue turn-based, or an action RPG? Thanks!
Action
I want to make a indie game. I have started but game development is lot of work. Hopefully I can buckle down and finish it and sell it to the masses. I need to be working on it a lot more than I have been.
Great list, although unlike most of your videos, the audio mix was off, the music was too loud, had trouble hearing you
I appreciate you pointing that out, I’ll make sure to check the audio in future videos!
WOOOOO! ROMANCING SAGA 2 MADE THE LIST! :U
I cancelled my pre-order for Elrentaros Wanderings and exchanged it for Ys Memoires Oath In Felghana. What’s the background mucus?
As always, I learn more about what makes a man hot to other men, and you even splashed in some info about RPGs. Thank you!
I'm happy to help you with your important life decisions! lol
"I doodoo my best"
It's official
Great video, though the background music is too loud, can't hear your beautiful voice enough.
Sorry about that
Hearing FFMQ music makes me feel warm inside, but David the music was too loud compared to your voice, so it was hard to hear you!
Already simping for the Grandblue Fantasy blond knight.
There's not enough time 😅😊
Can you please say console they’re available on when listing games?
