Fuyutsuki was not ready for instrumentality but he went with Gendos plan all the way because he knew that Yuis plan was to stop Gendo and Seele right at the end and save Shinji because thats why she had her body and soul transferred into Eva unit 01.

I think that was the parallel as he calls Mari iscariot which was judas’s name. The one who betrayed the savior/god. I think that told how fuyutski truly felt about stopping gendoh but had to go along until the end just like the last supper.

Why was that Yui plan? You would say this is why she sacrificed herself? That is a bit of a paradox considering that Gendo only started considering the Human Instrumentality thing because she died. But maybe Fuyutsuki knew she would stop him when the time comes, so maybe it was not a plan from the start?

I would say Fuyutsuki's ultimatum goal was to see Yui once more as he was in love with her. Had he really wanted to defy Gendo in order to honor Yui's plans to bestow upon her son this bright future, he would've done it a long time ago or just not gone along with his plans from the very beginning. However, he didn't do it.

its 3.0+1.0 because it ends the previous timeline and the beginning of the new world. Mari is the name added to the book of life, and is there to help Shinji break the endless cycle. she did not exist in the previous loops and thus was a stick shoved into the cogs of the machine to break it in the end.
As for Asuka being a clone at the end: in the final instrumentality with the golgatha object, the characters seem to become their prime versions, version of themselves from both nge and rebuild. Asuka is both shikinami and soryu combined as one. Gendo and Shinji both have memories from EoE and NGE, which shinji uses to give gendo the same therapy he received in EoE.

The thing about Mari that clicked with me is that she's exactly who Yui was to Gendo: she just appeared and liked him for who he was and just rolled with it seeing the man he became after coming to grips with his past and emotions. You can see that glimmer appear in Asuka's eyes as they soften when she replies he grew up a bit during their last talk where the two girls visited his room/cage. Asuka's also alone at the train station during the ending, something that somewhat felt as a bummer to me, but at least Anno didn't do the "thirty year old loli" bullshit with her and kensuke either. at least she got "bigger" too even if we don't know where and if she hooked up

Except you forget that Mari was actually a scientist and was in love with Yui. And since only one could have gotten to work at NERVE (Yui), Mari went to work elsewhere (Seele). Which is why Mari is more carefree and more "mature". Mari is OLD!!! When Asuka said Shinji needs a mother, well, there you go. Mari even started cutting Asuka's hair, much how a mother would a daughter. And ironically, what Asuka needed was a Father. Everyone gets a happy ending except Village Rei, who didn't even get a name... RIP

  • @blarghmcblarghson1903
    @blarghmcblarghson1903 3 года назад +24

Regarding the Rei at the end of the movie: in the scene where Mari is cutting Asuka's hair, Asuka complains about how everything about her stays the same except for her hair, which continues to grow, to which Mari comments that's proof of being human; seems like a scene to hint that Asuka has doubts about her humanity or that she's something more, but it's also a clue that the Rei we see at the end, who has years worth of uncut hair on her head (though if you want to overthink it, it's 4~5 years worth of hair and not 14 years worth of hair, but that's... splitting hairs), is "human" and thus the original.

Shinji and Auskua DID have a reconciliation and move into a ‘normal’ relationship. They both admitted to and accepted their feelings for each other in the past (even though in this instance they were largely not acted on) and then went on their separate ways in their separate lives (after the Neon Genesis reset). This is REAL to how normal people move on after relationships earlier in life. Shinji’s relationship with Mari is only possible because of the emotional acceptance and growth he experiences.

1.0 - you are (not) alone
    3.0 - you can (not) re-do
To me the title reinforces one of the main themes of Eva as a whole: you must own up to your mistakes, no matter how hard, embarrassing, shameful it may be. You can not re do the past, you can not take back your mistakes, but you are not alone. You will have people besides you to help you through this, running away from them, from your actions, is running away from one’s self.
I also think it’s kind of a meta commentary on the Eva fan base. If Anno were to keep making Eva media, we would be there. But as long as he keeps creating, the characters will continue to suffer in this endless cycle of despair. This FINAL ending lets these characters live outside of us, happy and free. And while it’s bittersweet to see this series we love finally truly end, we all have each other, the Eva community, to lean on, to discuss this show with, to share our love and admiration of this work together.
Man, Eva truly is something special

But Shinji is only able to re-write the world after everyone (Shinji, Gendo, Misato, Asuka, exc.) all face their past and come to terms with it and move on.
But in the end, it's my interpretation of this, and that is what makes eva so special: even the title can spark many different conversations. I'm curious as to your thoughts on the title? what do you think it means?

I'm not convinced Shinji is in a romantic partnership with Mari. Sure, she makes the most sense if we're looking at it logically. But what we were presented was a flirty Mari (has always been flirty so nothing new this is repeated behavior that she does to Asuka too) and a flirty reciprocating Shinji (this is new he's confident now and is expressive and participating). Mari is the one literally leading Shinji out of the loop, literally pulling him off the beach and into his new life and timeline. That being said, I don't believe they're "together". I think that's shipping culture projecting. I believe they're friendly now and Shinji will eventually meet up with everyone else we saw at the train station. They're there. But "shipping" is nonconclusive and ultimately finding a partner isn't the point of the movies.

this is completely how i took it too. mari is an outsider in a way to shinji (not sharing in or causing his trauma) while still sharing an experience with the evas. for me the buildup and the chemistry for a romantic relationship there doesn't make sense, and mari was flirty with everyone anyway. but, mari being an "outsider" accepting shinji for who he is after he has gained confidence and self esteem is symbolic of him forming his first relationship without expectations of personal gain, which solidified his whole character arc in the rebuilds. i feel like it works better as platonic but was left up to interpretation as romantic as well intentionally-- either way you go their connection still has the same meaning-- show casing how shinji has "grown up"

i think youre focusing too much on who + who in the end. i consider the ending of end of evangelion as one of the best endings i have ever seen because it is also kinda hopeful, but it cuts off right where we and shinji realise it, and i also dont think it means he didnt let go. what happened on the beach was the prerequisite for him to be able to let go.
at least thats part of my interpretation of it and a reason why i think its so brilliant. movies are a visual medium and i think eoe ending utilises the full potential of "show dont tell" in a poetic and amazing way, it says so much while little is being said.

It resonates in a way that this movie did not even though I am satisfied with it. However, I was trying to find the exact difference between the message of this movie and that one. Even though it definitely convey hope things can change, EoE's pessimism also does imply that the cycle of violence and self-hate will repeat while this one is more committed to breaking that by actually doing something about it.

I watched the movie last night, and honestly, i felt very happy for Anno. The third movie in particular was very bitter and judgemental towards the toxic escapism that Eva fandom harbored, especially in japan. The way i felt the last part of this finalmovie, is him leaving behind his father's obsession and mistakes, accepting pain as an unavoidable aspect of reality, giving up the dream of finding happiness in a fantasy world with an idolised/idealized woman that turns out to be as broken (Asuka) or empty/fake (Rei) as him, and just giving to the world the most genuine and sincere version of himself. It's not partonising or overly cryptic, you just feel it was simply time to move on, let go, and look forward to new things. I'm so glad he was able to be as sincere and intimate with his audience to the last.

I think the way they explained it was that the Asuka we see in this series of films was the only successful iteration of the "Shikinami" series of clones, while the other versions of her were deemed unfit and thus scrapped. Which is why she is shown to have an inferiority complex throughout most of the films. Especially her feelings towards Rei, whose series of clones were probably competing against Asuka's as to which would be chosen.

In regards to Shinji ending up with Asuka or Mari, I felt like the ends of both EoE and 3.0+1.0 handled it perfectly for their respective stories' themes.
The original Evangelion series was about what it means to connect with others in a way that coincides with accepting reality and accepting yourself. Both Shinji and Asuka needed and wanted others in their lives, but due to their traumas, they always resorted to either running away or pushing others away. Having them BOTH wake up on the shore of a reborn and war-torn world that will NEVER rid itself of the evil scar of the Evangelions highlights that bittersweet feeling of hope that one can still connect with others despite your flaws as long as you are willing to accept them as well as accepting the flaws of others. Both Asuka and Shinji, in this situation, are very much like the world that they find themselves in, reborn but eternally changed, for better or for worse, by their past that is intertwined with the Evangelions.
3.0+1.0, as you said, represents a truly new beginning where the curse of Evangelion is finally lifted and brings about a beautiful and well-deserved blank slate for everyone. The Rebuild series seems place the utmost importance on the theme of letting go of the past and accepting the beauty that the future can hold, and thus Shinji ending the series with Mari represents that perfectly.
Both the original series and the rebuild series do indeed stress the dangers of escapism and the importance of facing reality, as you said, but do so in wonderfully unique ways. It is for this reason that I love both the Rebuild and Original series dearly.

12:03 Unless Depression is symptomatic, people are seldom "cured". Anno has learned what has helped him tackle his depression. The love and experience of others. • @weirdy8

16:42-17:45 I get that's the intent, but it's undercut to me by how we don't get to actually see if Shinji letting them go actually lead to them being happier because it's solely thru Shinji's perspective. To me the message of "let go of Eva" rang hollow because (apart from Khara wanting to return to the well), in the end he could only connect this to the original via meta. This didn't feel like the characters letting go, but rather Anno telling us the characters are letting go.

    • @OniMaru
      @OniMaru  3 года назад +7

Anno tends to lean a little too much into telling vs showing at the verge of becoming preachy. After watching the documentary about his struggle to make this film, it only confirmed that he originally wrote this more heavyhandedly in his original drafts. But it still worked for me because at this point I see Evangelion as being so intrinsically Anno that him being able to tie everything back together (even if it was meta, now that you mention it) felt triumphant because it also harkened back to the original TV ending, which he himself was satisfied with.
It also confirming the existence of the previous endings/timelines, which led me to believe that these characters would end up back in the same cycle unless something different was done this time around, and that's why I think I bought into it without having to see their happiness because everything before this was perpetuating a cycle of brokenness.
On another note, I didn't realize this until afterward but it's interesting that Mari was the only character not based on him. He doesn't identify with Mari and purposely left her development to someone else, so that she would be this external force outside of him that could help break the wheel.

And tbh I did feel that loss, cause he was in charge of many of the character focused eps including Kaworu.
That bit about ep 4 in particular stung because Kensuke being chad is owed entirely to him. And speaking of the TV ending, my biggest disappointment was that the ending for 4.0 ended up just being a minor tweak to the happy parallel world in ep 26.

Personally, I think the key point about Mari is that she’s the one who breaks someone out of their own world. (Maybe even literally breaking immersion XD ) So, as you mentioned, her narrative role matches what Anno attributes to his wife, but Mari here doesn’t have to do that romantically. Someone who suspiciously looks like Mari appears in Gendo’s flashbacks, breaking him out of his rut and getting him to meet Yui. I imagine her relationship with Shinji is similar; she’s the extrovert who pulls him out into the real world. They don’t have to be a romantic couple at the end, there, as Gendo did not pair up with the Mari-alike.
Really cool point about Anno’s wife, by the way, as that’s the kind of background not everyone is going to know! There’s so much fun symbolism to unpack in the last 30 minutes of 3+1, and thank you for going though a bunch of them!

Asuka and Rei and Kaworu have poor boundaries with him and he is infatuated with them via his and their neurosis, via problems and conflict, but gets a clue when he analyses their problems instead of just himself.
Yeh she is a bit of a blank slate "just the girl with glasses and big boobs" was a comment that alluded to that a bit. She lacks depth because unlike every screwed up character she is just not depressed! Thing is though she seems a bit psycho-manic at first, by the last film due to shinjis realisations its more like she just isnt as fucked up and might be the only character capable of actual happiness. Maybe happiness can look a bit blank to a depressed person, like they fear it, maybe its a kind of wiping the narrative clean and feels a bit empty afer extreme grief...could be the intended symbolism, to be less damn intense about everything, Shinji, the right way isnt victory but calm and a clear head!

Mari was the ONLY one who could give Shinji a fresh start. She was the only untraumatised, well-adjusted character. She was able to be ordinarily upbeat and flirtatious and fun, the way a first young relationship should be. He needed a light hearted new beginning. Life is very long. Exhaustingly. Anno by now is experienced enough to see that sometimes your life can remain stuck in the ruins of things past until out of nowhere Spring arrives, from some unexpected place. Something you know nothing about, but which is fresh and exciting. Mari was all of that. Ayanami was too maternal and lacked independence. Asuka was too negative, and needed someone she could make a fresh impression on, in order that she can discover a new possibility for her self expression with someone else, after all that she has been through. And it is better for Shinji that he can start a new life with someone with whom he has no history. After the trauma of his childhood but especially the very aging trauma of the war, Shinji probably feels a little bit old. If by any miracle there was someone out there who could both comprehend his experience and take a positive attitude towards it, it had to be Mari. Mari represented exactly what a fresh new relationship is - someone who's full depth is murky and undeveloped, who you start off from the very first step having a fun chemistry with from the start, which develops toward commitment and deep emotional bonding, but also has the airy-ness of just being fun, making you feel brand new again. By the way, did I mention Anno remarried...?...in 2002 to Moyoko Anno, a woman he cites as the inspiration for Mari's character?
Also, I kinda stan that he ended up settling the best girl debate with a tie for last. :P

Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive.
Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day.
Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now.
I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain.
I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified.
But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy.
Whenever I feel this way, there’s something I remind myself with.
But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.

I feel like people misunderstood what end of evangelion was trying to say. Shinji was able to improve by little bit, which is realistic. The best way to understand Eva is to pay attention and understand what characters are saying and going through rather than the action scenes, world building, etc because that’s what I did when I watched it the second time and finally understood why people say it’s one of the best shows of all time. the original show is just about a masterpiece in my opinion. Honestly I pretty much agreed with everything that Jobby in his review.

Mari is an interesting character. I agree that she wasn't fleshed out and looked like a incongruous add on, but the last 30 minutes changed how I viewed her, giving her a backstory. How old is Mari? From the earlier movies, we know she is older and mature, but how much older? Asuka was aware that Mari was older, calling her a "four-eye crone". How much of her past she knew wasn't clear. Fuyutsuki called Mari: Mary Iscariot. In his last moments, when Fuyutsuki looked at the picture of Yui and Shinji, Mari was in that picture. She looked to be in the same age range of Yui. We also saw Mari in Gendo's flashbacks. Mari with a lab coat was present at the hospital when Yui gave birth. She was either a grad student or a full-fledged junior scientist and probably older than 18 in that picture, but who knows as there are plenty of precocious high IQ characters in Evangelion like Asuka, who graduated college in her teens. In 3.0+1.01, if we assume Mari was 20 in that picture, she would be 20+15+14 = approximately 49-50 years old and perhaps even older. Four-eye Crone indeed, but kept young by being an EVA pilot.
The name Mary Iscariot is interesting and can be viewed in a number of ways. I know her full name is Mari Makinami Illustrious. Christian theology and Gnosticism were integral to Evangelion. Iscariot is derived from Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus. Fuyutsuki calling her "Mary Iscariot" was his way of calling Mari a traitor to their cause: the Human Instrumentality project. I don't think that this Mary was Mary who was the mother of Jesus, but Mary Magdalene who was a follower of Jesus and his wife according to Gnostic scriptures. This Mary makes more sense in the context of Shinji who became a god and changed the world, resurrecting the dead and eliminating Evangelions, and becoming Shinji's significant other in the new reality. Everyone else's minds were reset except for Shinji and Mari and this understanding or Gnosis circles back to Gnosticism. How much insight and power does this knowledge give them? That's up to speculation, but Shinji and Mari won't be tampering with the lives of Asuka and Ayanami. On the platform across from Shinji we saw Asuka sitting alone on a bench looking at her cell phone and Ayanami and Kaworu standing very close, like they're in a relationship.
    Some final observations.
That explosive collar that Shinji had at the train station, symbolized a number of things. First that it wasn't all a dream and that reality with Evangelions happened. Second, Mari removed that collar, freeing Shinji from the past, including freeing him from his sins, starting a new beginning (Neon Genesis) with them running together out of the train station. Mari didn't give Shinji the collar back, but instead placed it in her pocket, saying symbolically "You're free. We're in this together".
Mari said: "You smell fine as usual. Like an adult". This wasn't the first time. When she met Shinji (Parachute Girl), she also said that Shinji smelled nice. There's a scientific basis for this as pheromones are responsible for this. It's a way of saying that we're compatible...we would be great in a relationship (genetically speaking). It was a nice allusion from Parachute Girl to Significant other over the course of the movies.

So I suppose this has something to do with the fact that Shinji and Mari are the ones who "reset" everything and came back from the Anti Universe, and they're also the only ones with memories of what happened.
I may be mistaken, but to me during the train station scene they both looked older. So I suppose that with the reset the Eva curse is broken and thus they can age normally.

Oh I agree with this, especially with 3.0. That's why I was sort of lukewarm on the rebuilds until this last movie because I felt like the message wasn't intended for me. But I love that this one tied everything back together and went a step beyond by closing the book on Eva for good.

In the documentary Anno does mention that, he tought that the previous endings were understandable, but latter found out that a lot of people didn't understand them, so with this ending, he wanted everybody to understand it, so he made it as clear as possible. In the documentary his staff tells him that the last part of the movie is rather complex, so he rewrote it and one staff member shows an email when Anno submited the changes where he says "I hope this makes it more understandable". So even this movie's ending got a rewrite.

That was the best possible ending for the EVA franchise in my opinion. A clean slate for Shinji !
If you were given the opportuniy to start from scratch with someone you knew from the past would it it be with a person who share a half broken relationship with you that you will have to try to repair from the beginning ?
If you pay enough attention, Mary is close enough to Shinji, just enough for him to know that she is carrying the best aspects of every single person that he loved through the franchise without any toxic bagage this time :
she is energetic and a potential daily life compass like Misato was for Shinji when he used to live at her place.
she wants to nurture him which is the parralel with Rei and his mother Yui.
she is a natural and shines around an eva like Asuka did.
She wants the best for him like Kaworu did.
We can also notice that she is the one who is technically able and is actually saving him from the anti universe this time to start fresh (Shinji always carried the burden of being forced to make choices to save people he cared about which ended up in a disastrous or weird situation every single time with the other characters mentioned earlier). I'm pretty sure that it has a deep meaning for him.
Finally, Shinji is making a choice for himself not for us the spectators, so he is naturally ending up with the more mature and healthiest choice for himself this time around !

I’d like to think Mari also represented strength through perspective and positive simplicity. Some people (like Shinji) take their own issues too seriously and get trapped from doing things they loved to do and grow because of their fears. i think when Anno dated his wife he probably had all these chaotic thoughts (likely caused by death threats and his already existing depression) that were pacified by the simplicity and motivating force of his wife being active, kind and reliable detaching Anno from the fear of the world that used to bind him.

When you watch the NGE series, EOE & the Rebuild movies back to back.
You would find out why Shinji didn’t end up with Asuka or Rei.
Asuka may have had feelings for Shinji throughout the series. How exactly did she go about expressing it? Put downs, verbal & physical abuse. On top of her own mental issues.
    Shinji is self explanatory.
If the 2 of them were to enter a relationship, it would be very toxic.

To me Asuka always represented Neon Genesis Evangelion from Anno's perspective. This movie represents Shinji/Anno appreciating Asuka/NGE for all they are, but also moving on to the next person/project. By the end, Asuka/NGE is still in the real world, but it's not the focal point. Compare this to EoE, where Shinji/Anno treats Asuka/NGE with literal/metaphorical mastubartion. He brings NGE back, but it tells him he's disgusting for doing so. This ending is perfect because it allowed Anno to finally let go.

I felt it was the closest thing we'll ever get to proper closure for a story that many of us have followed for a quarter of a century now. It also served as Anno's way of telling the audience that yes, he has overcome his depression and he's finally moved on, and that we all should strive to better ourselves.

3:40 That is the core (no pun intended) of the entire thing. Shinji is the redo of Gendo; what Gendo is doing for Yui is no different than what Shinji would do for Rei. It's the same. Shinji 'wins' by finally moving past it and just growing up and living a normal life.

I saw another analyst point out that Mari makes more sense for Shinji to be with than Rei or Asuka, because she is new to the series and has the least backstory and baggage. Rei being a clone of Shinjis mother, even beyon the ick factor of that it would be Shinji moving backwards, symbolically falling back into his mothers arms, reverting to the womb so to speak. Meanwhile with Asuka, given their relationship in the NG timeline, multiple attempted stranglings and so forth, the two of them have too strained a relationship for it to really work. Honestly the best thing for both of them is to part ways on good terms. Meanwhile Mari, being the newcomer and stranger of the series, sy.bises moving forward, embracing the new even if it is scary, embracing life even if there is only a chance but no guarantee of happiness, which is kinda the whole point of Evangelion.

I'd been dealing with panic attacks and serious anxiety since kindergarten and by 13 was developing bipolar disorder, I was doing alternately very well and very badly, and it really gave me hope. That even when I was suffering, I could still always imagine a future where I didn't. I really credit EoE with helping keep me alive these past very brutal, very incredible 19 years. My life has gotten much better over the past two years (weirdly enough), and it felt satisfying to see that Anno and Shinji grew up with me.

Is it confirmed that Shinji and Mari are dating? I considered it but didn't get those vibes. Her character has just never respected people's boundaries lol... I think the idea there being that Shinji wasn't bothered by her coming into his space (His AT field, if you will) and even flirted back with her. I initially almost felt that her and Asuka were in a relationship due to how Mari acted earlier in the film, like some kind of housewife almost lol. So it's easy for me to think she was just being Mari and the scene showed how comfortable Shinji had become to letting people in and just... Existing. Of course maybe I missed some clue! I didn't look to see if there was a wedding band or what not.
I also think that the reason those two are together at the end is because he sent everyone else out and he and Mari got trapped in the Anti-Universe (I think that's the name) because she came back for him. The end of the movie seemed to be them meeting up at the train station where they could come back to reality. I know they used real world imagery, but I took that to mean it was the world without Evas.
I'm also not convinced that no one will remember what had occurred, because with the power that comes from the impact I could see him deleting the Evas and allowing everyone to keep their memory. The memory is important to Shinji at this point. To have people forget would defeat the purpose and the growth everyone experienced. It's why he didn't want to start over. If you're going to change things about people's memories, essentially deleting their personality ... Well then, you might as well rewind. Given everything with Rei and trying to find herself, only to have to start over everytime a clone was replaced. I think it would be against his character to do that since it seemed to always hurt him to watch.
Sorry for the long reply, hopefully someone will read this anyway. 🤣 It is Eva after all, hard to enjoy such a metaphorical and complex show without enjoying long detailed discussions about it.

  • @nakimoto75

It might be because I wasn’t as invested in the romance part of the original show (I always thought, above all, Shinji needed to learn to love himself), but I think Mari being with Shinji is believable because she is the first character he interacts with after he learns to accept his flaws. Basically, Mari is the first person that he is able to interact with with his new perspective on life.
That being said, I feel like Mari could’ve used LESS development to make a better story. If less mystery was attributed to her, the expectations set on her wouldn’t have been as high. I’m especially referring to the ‘Mari Iscariot’ line and her presence in Gendoh’s backstory.
The theme of Evangelion seems to always encompass learning to love yourself so you can love others and be loved by them, so, to me, this ending satisfies that while also showing that Shinji was able to internalize that lesson and practice it. While it may not be with a person we’re familiar with, it was the person he chose.

A good theme and a fitting end for the series. Overall it was a great run. Thank you, Anno

I loved the new ending. Shinji not only gets closure, but he gets the opportunity to confront and work things out with EVERYONE. The side characters that disappeared toward the end of the original series play a role in helping Shinji recover from the guilt of causing the N3E, which he never did in the original and was almost always a floundering passive character until the end where he makes a crucial decision, but the results of that decision were vague and even pessimistic. We get to see the aftermath of Shinji's critical decision, Yui's actions make much more sense, the characters, if not redeemed, at least admit they were wrong. No Misato "adult kiss" or Shinji jerking it onto a comatose girl.
I liked Mari because she showed Shinji genuine affection and support when it was pretty much transactional for everyone else. Asuka was bitter and mean with the affection she spared, Rei was aloof and cold a lot of the time, Misato tried her best but doesn't know how to nurture anyone due to her losing her own father early and prioritized the job. Ever since she was introduced in the 2nd movie,, Mari gave Shinji pet names, helped him rather often, said things to make him feel cool, and even encouraged him to be a hero. This was all reiterated in the end when it's her that gives him the new spear and comes for him at the end. She is the variable that makes the critical differences from the rebuild and EoE.
The original tried to kind of make the fantasy world uncomfortable and characters to get people immersed in the real world instead. The rebuild celebrates the real world and encourages connection with others. Same message from different angles, a perfect compliment to the original series in my opinion.

I partly feel like with the ending majority of the cast (Rei, Asuka and kaoru) all had kind of toxic relationships with Shinji. Not saying that any one character were toxic but people can sometimes cause toxicity in one another. With him ending with Mari is a new beginning with someone that will not throw him back into that funk or toxic way of thinking. Not having a problem with them and still loving them but knowing that they are better off not together so that they can continue moving forward. Also I feel like rei symbolized innocence of a child while Asuka was more of a teenager and Mari symbolizes a full grown woman. Hense why at the end shinji ends up with her as he has grown into a man.

I don't know if anyone has said it yet, but the Asuka clone isn't really a thing. What's the movie seems to be saying is that they are going through a never ending cycle. The Asuka she met inside the Eva is either one of or the first incarnation of Asuka. When you look at Kaworu when he first woke up all around him are coffins. On his left was his previous incarnations. The unopened ones were the next. It's not until Shinji chooses neon genesis when the cycle finally ends.

    • @frankjaeger2565

Kaworu keeps on dieing and resurrecting within the Rebuild timeline, that's the only "cycle". The visual references in the last part of the movie are just that, metareferences to the Evangelion franchise, they don't imply a literal connection between the two stories. This movie showed that the Rebuild world is significantly different than that of the original series, there's just no way it's the same timeline.
