Material Composition: Like many asteroids, Apophis is believed to be composed of rock, metals, and possibly some water ice. Spectroscopic observations suggest that it has a stony composition, likely consisting of silicate minerals.
The 2029 Close Approach
Apophis became a subject of intense study due to a series of calculations that initially suggested a significant chance of collision with Earth on April 13, 2029. Early estimates gave it a 2.7% chance of impacting the Earth, which would have caused widespread devastation due to its size and velocity. However, as more data became available, these probabilities were refined, and by 2006, the risk of collision in 2029 was effectively ruled out.
Instead of a collision, Apophis will make a very close approach to Earth, passing at a distance of about 31,600 kilometers (19,600 miles). This is closer than some of our geostationary satellites, offering a unique opportunity for study but posing no threat to life on Earth.
Future Close Approaches
After 2029, Apophis will continue to be monitored closely due to its future approaches to Earth, particularly in 2036 and 2068. However, current models predict that the asteroid will not impact Earth during these close approaches.
