  • Responding to warning calls often involves making difficult decisions.
    What's often overlooked, however, is how important it is to gain the maximum amount of useful information from the call. You should make sure that you keep calm, get as much information as possible, keep the line open after the caller has hung up and report it to your manager who will liaise with the police.

    VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
    Everyone who could potentially receive a bomb threat should know what to do and know what information should be collected.
    First of all, if you can, switch on a recording device - for example, the telephone system may have a recording facility, or you could put the call on speaker phone and record it on your mobile phone.
    If you can’t record the call, signal to a colleague to listen in. This is important as it will help you to remember important facts afterwards.
    * Write down the time of the call
    * Write down the exact wording of the threat.
    * If you have ‘caller display’ on your phone, write down the number displayed.
    * Ask these questions:
    * Where exactly is the bomb right now?
    * When is it going to explode?
    * What does it look like?
    * What kind of bomb is it?
    * How will it be detonated?
    * Did YOU place the bomb? If not, who did?
    * Do you represent a group or are you acting alone?
    * Why have you placed the bomb?
    * What is your name?
    * What is your address?
    * What is your telephone number?
    * Record the time the call ended.
    * KEEP THE TELEPHONE LINE OPEN (even if the caller has disengaged).
    * Inform your Manager. Write down the name and telephone number of the person informed.
    * Contact the Police by using the emergency telephone number. Write down the time they were informed.
    * And, once the caller has hung up and the Police and your Manager have been informed, write down the time and date of the call, the length of the call and your extension number or the number on which the call was received.
    The MOST important questions are: Where is the bomb? And when is it going to explode*
    However, bear in mind that any answers to any questions may not be true.
