The small tip on that indicator will mess with you on a surface like that. There are kits you can buy that have different tips for the indicator like a big flat one for rough surfaces like that. Also you might want to get a base with a thumb screw for adjusting zero better repeatability

It's ironic. The just published a spec about a month ago. Before if we saw movement, junk. 1 to 1.5mm is not easy to see, hence the indicator.
