I wished they would have shown more of the s10 build up. They make (or made) a kit to get rid of the front axle vacuum actuator, it makes it 100% cable operated.
mcqueenfanman I had a 1991 Sonoma, which I tried to retro fit with the cable actuated front axle, the cable worked once and I ended up getting rid of the thing because it didn't work properly. Yes, I followed the instructions. It was poorly designed. I ended up tying directly into the vacuum system with a T junction and ran the vacuum actuator that way, which worked until I got rid of the truck.
The rear-end bob on the S10 was cool, but that build was ridiculously expensive and evidently ineffective. The S10 build should have included a used Torsen rear carrier for about $100. You needed tires, but you could've found cheaper (tall) tires to put on the stock rims and saved about $500. And given the year, you should have addressed the vacuum leak (read replace all vacuum lines) that took out the 4x4 shifting before going to the challenge. Other tricks: '98+ Blazer front end (a-arms, knuckles, sway bar, brakes) gets you dual-caliper brakes. Replace the seal between the transmission and the xfer case. With a Torsen in the back, decent tires and the 4x4 working, the S10 would've been a contender rather than a back-marker.
The first vehicle I ever owned was an 85 S-10 4wd. I put a lift and a good MT. Was a lot of fun for a kid. Cheap to fix when you break things, as a kid you will do a lot of that. This was in the 90s so there were thousands of them in yards. So I wasn't afraid to hurt it at all. Think it was a good experience that taught me what I needed to know moving forward.
I can't believe he couldn't get his 4x4 working on that S10!!! I had the same shit happen to me out in the desert on my S10 Blazer. Fixed it with 2 zip ties and a stick.
fred your cut bed and bumper on the back worked just perfect and it looks bad ass. Lets see more of this truck in the future. always awesome vids everyone............ -_-
***** Do you not get the idea of the challenge? "A rig a kid drive to get into wheeling". When I was a teenager, I didn't have hundreds of dollars to blow on my car. But if I could get a hand-me-down jeep and throw some mud tires and a set of springs on and take it on the hill, I'd be all over that.
I just found a 1985 4Runner with the solid front axle for $1550, Solid frame too, thing has handled great in the snow recently. Gotta say the old yotas are my favorite when it comes to mini trucks
I don't understand some of the issues people have with Jeep. I have a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 230k with all original drive-train and suspension, and it's still going strong. It's my DD and weekend wheeler and its never left me stranded. Honestly, I think most the people who don't like them either never personally owned one, or are simply jealous.
The zjs are such legendary vehicles. It does suck to be a fan of them cuz the chevy and ford and import people rag on them for being a jeep and the wrangler snobs (#notallwrangleowners) rag on them for not being a real jeep. But they are legendary. Especially the 5.9 and the 4.0
Fred needs to hang with the roadkill guys more... Weld front and rear diffs, smack it into 4wd permanently, and add a 200 Shot of nitrous! Who cares if it can't turn... 4WD doughnuts duh!!!
Funny, I have a 1991 S10 Blazer 4x4 with the 4.3 all stock with mud tires and it would have climbed challenge 1 no problem. Maybe this guy needs to not off road anymore. By the way the issue that your having is directly under the battery and its a vacuum issue. Just an FYI for ya
My shifter works fine with just the cable pinched in a pair uh vice grips. It's been pinched for at least 6 years and goes in n outta 4 like it was designed that way.
Jeep grand Cherokees are by far one of the worse cars ever made. The build quality is horrid. From auto trans that grenade in 50K miles, to the unreliable jeep EFI. My friends owned these Cherokees to off-road with and they were breaking down every other week. I remember we had AAA tow my friends Cherokee, and the driver said he towed a jeep or crysler vehicle twice as much as any other manufacturer.
Stephen Bagnell Especially the trans axles. My 2010 Caravan is in the shop with 55k on it for a failed bearing and planetary gear. Luckily, its still under warranty.
depends on the trans. the 54rfe is a pretty strong, many people with well over 150K on them. Not to mention there are tons of parts available, not hard to swap in another one.
Trust me any serious stuff like when my grandpa's orchard flooded and his 2 wheel drive f150 had problems. He had to run and get the 78 f250 4x4. All the 4x4 had no problems
I had an '88 S15 Jimmy that I used to take off road. I loved that truck, it was indestructible. I was a little disappointed that it looked so bad in the challenge because you couldn't engage the front diff. I think it got a bad rap....
as a kid I took my 99 chevy S10 blazer 4 door 4x4 off roading it had kumo performance tires on it i could go were all the jeeps went I just couldn't climb step sand hills. will now I gotta 2002 chevy S10 ZR2 with stick 4x4. it's a lot more fun to take off roading I loved my blazer so I wanted another S10 variant. I put some performance mods just to make it a little more fun headers, custom straight piped exhaust, flowmaster super 10 muffler, accel super coil pack, 8mm MSD wires, spectra cold air intake, and some 31×10.5 tires it's fun in the mud it just goes right through it but it still sucks in and lol
There are quite a few 4x4 S10s and lifted S10s around here and they do much better offroad and go far more places than any of they jeeps on the trails with them.
+Thomas Campbell Do you daily drive your blazer with the welded rear? I have a 98 S10 4x4 with the 4.3, and I tied the front cable and it works great. Just worried about daily driving with a welded rear, since I only go offroading once every few weeks or so.
+Max Meyer I have driven it on the road but not every day it barked the tires around tight turns but never broke any axles not sure about every day driving though
There is this website - it's on this new fanged contraption called cornputer. On this here mochine u can buy cars and trucks that are rust free! PLUS you can get it mailed 2 u!

camerl2009 Things aren't that bad. If you live on Pelee island or even Windsor (probably the southernmost place that qualifies as any kind of metropolis) you can find plenty of things, we're practically neighbors and all it takes is some looking. And cars have to rust pretty far to become unsafe If you worry about things looking perfect that's a different story, but unsafe takes a long time (a jeep that age should still be fine).
this is such bs that they ran the competition with the S10 stuck in 2 wheel drive. With all the people they have at 4wheel and offroad magazine they couldn't have got it fixed in a day or 2 and then shoot the challenge?
I got stuck in a 17" deep snow blizzard once with my buddies and my square body S-10 4wd quit working in the front. I figured out what was wrong. I was about 20 or so years old and had a S-10 blazer. I took the shoestring out of my shoe and went under the hood and tied it to the cable and pulled it tight and had full 4wd again and I had an even bigger smile on my face. That thing just wouldn't get stuck. My shoestring cable tied 4wd held tight and allowed me to travel about 200 more miles home through the snow with no problem. Yeah it may go out but it is simple and that's a plus for sure.
I had a 1988 S-10 Blazer 4X4 4.3L, awesome truck, great off road, but I had to replace vacuum lines for the 4X4. I also had a 1993 Grand Cherokee Limited V8, awesome truck, great off road, lots of power. The Jeep is identical to the one in the vid, it was white with gold accents and had a light brown leather interior, unfortunately, I had to give it back to the guy I got it from because of title issues, but the Blazer and Jeep are the most fun things I have ever driven, and I've driven over 1200 vehicles.
Cinquecento Nero I can, do you really want me to send you 32 pages of the vehicles I've driven? I am a car fanatic and I always thought it would be fun to keep track of all the vehicles I've driven, so I made a list on a word document.. I went to school to be an automotive technician for 2.5 years, and have been working in the field for another 2.5 years, trust me, you end up driving a lot of vehicles.
David Peck Thanks, I'm sure other technicians will understand, pretty much everyday you are driving something else, I think the most vehicles I've driven in 1 day was 7
No tripod, no charisma, no nothing - not to mention lousy mic work at times, and the challenge segments seem staged like a bad Top Gear parody. Sponsorship plug was terrible too. Even the Roadkill-less 2013 challenge had more pep than this. Can't believe this is put out by the same bunch who can produce the absolutely Oscar-worthy Roadkill. P.S. to the top brass, the building owner, the city, and any lawyers who may or may not be responsible for the following: Get off your tight-arsed penguin butts and LET ROADKILL DO BURNOUTS IN THE COMPANY PARKING LOT - FOR NOW AND FOREVER.
The Cornbinder would be a perfectly fine daily if it had a better Trans and a better gas tank. You can pick up those chevy manuals for 100-200 all day with no slipping gears and a 40 gallon tank out of a suburban for another 50. That IH would be worth a good amount here in Nebraska with that said!
+jteutulsr well depends on what you have stock. my truck is a 95 ranger. comes with a 4L v6 and 4r55 tranny, dana 35 in front and ford 8.8 in the rear. Overall that engine is plenty of power for what it is. to use that for cheap truck challenge, getting better tires than the standard wrangler rts from goodyear is top priority. i run firestone destinations now which are great, so much better than the old tires. however if i'd bought a ranger with the 2.3 mazda 4 cylinder... well that's a different story.
lmao guy in the s10, he was like wow.. i think you guys misunderstood cheap truck xD granted they were still cheap.. but he wanted lower tier vehicles and they just didn't.. xD LOVE IT :P
Fred should have put the bypass 4wd in the front axle that locks it in to 4ws all the time since he trailered it. Get rid of the electric over vacuum crap gm put on there.
my mom had an 1991 chevy 1500 long bed and the only mod was target 350 and every thing else was stock it could offroad better than my dad's dodge 2500 with a lift kit. that chevy could never seem to get stuck even in deep mud.
S10 with 4x4 working and a $100 mini spool in the rear would have had this in the bag. I ran a cheap s10 like this for years and that cheap spool helped more then anything I bought for it. It was night and day difference on climbing. On dirt you’ll never know the axels are solid like u would on asphalt. Perfect for four wheeling.
Freiburger?.... Finnegan?..... Just not the same. Need all of the guys. I think Fred is getting stiffed on the video support. Come on MT.... help Fred out and give him some cash and support for the offroad side!
That International truck is pretty interesting, compared to the S10 and Grand Cherokee at least. A brand that often gets forgotten when talking about offroaders/pickup trucks, even older ones.
fred, what happened to that s10? is it still aroud? or possibly for sale? im a s10 freak man. got 2 blazers already. want a s10 to offroad wit. would love that one.
i demand a do-over, fix that s10!
I agree with you, yes the s10 is not the greatest but could've done better.
That 240 could of hauled ass with 4wd
Don’t they have a vacuum system for the 4x4
I think it would have been best to have the S10's 4WD fixed before filming this .......
That's part of the cheap truck challenge is you have to run the your truck by the deadline
I wished they would have shown more of the s10 build up. They make (or made) a kit to get rid of the front axle vacuum actuator, it makes it 100% cable operated.
But if they fixed it before hand they would have used the sponsored Voodoo Rope quite a bit less.

This hillclimb is brought to you by vodoo recovery rope, because sometimes your fourwheeldrive is only a twowheeldrive, and your v6 is still not a v8
Only because this guy is a dumb ass...
TurtleGamingNL it may not be a V8 but the 4.3L V6 is still a strong engine and fits the S10 well

oh come on guys .. fix the 4x4 in the S10 and record the episode one more time !
No doubt!
I love these guys, they just have a stupid amount of fun together and is what makes this show so great
Look at the front wheels on that s10, they are all over the place.
What if I'm a 30-something that still acts like a 16 year old? Can I still try to build a cheap truck?
not only is it OK, but you probably should.
30 is equal to 2
always carry a pair of vice grips if you own an s10 with vaccum actuated 4wd
i think my moms old suzuki ninja had that she always had to get up under the wheel wells to turn on 4wd
I'm over here going crazy watching this video like, "Pull the battery tray and the vac actuator then rig that cable up!"

This was kind of a waste of time. They should have fixed the 4wd on the S10 and put identical tires on all the vehicles.

Something about this episode was lacking; it didn't flow very well. I have a feeling the editing made it a bit jumbled up.
I had an old International Scout... One of the best beater/offroad trucks I've ever had.

Why do always Fred get the worst vehicle? And did he even spend 2k on parts??
You should get spell check or a dictionary
KingOfTheRoad
its more entertaining
KingOfTheRoad it because he buys a unrelaible every time and should of welded the diff
I was at work just waiting for the show and it was great
this is what happens when you waste all your money on wheels, tires, and suspension without beefing up your drivetrain. derp.
Do more cheap truck challenges please I really like that
i want the international pick-up
Thank you Motor Trend
the international truck is the winner in my book on looks alone.
lmao guy in the s10, he was like wow.. i think you guys misunderstood cheap truck xD granted they were still cheap.. but he wanted lower tier vehicles and they just didn't.. xD LOVE IT :P
Can I have that jeep I need to make my friend jelly cause she wants it XD
Love this channel 👍
Wearing sun glasses while raining and no sun on the sky because????...
Prescription.
Too protect against flying rocks and debris.
because this is America, that's why!
^ real reason.
Because drugs
Fred should have put the bypass 4wd in the front axle that locks it in to 4ws all the time since he trailered it. Get rid of the electric over vacuum crap gm put on there.
I thought the hosts were pretty good actually.
same here. I dont know what people are complaining about...
***** wtf
+Jesse Miller you don't have to be here there is a thing called the X in the top right you can pick and leave
my mom had an 1991 chevy 1500 long bed and the only mod was target 350 and every thing else was stock it could offroad better than my dad's dodge 2500 with a lift kit. that chevy could never seem to get stuck even in deep mud.
This cheap Truck challenge SUCKS. what a waste of time , bring Freiburger and Finnegan next time.
If it's a waste of time then why did you watch it
Same reason you did . I thought it would be like the last one
Linamar i agree
S10 with 4x4 working and a $100 mini spool in the rear would have had this in the bag. I ran a cheap s10 like this for years and that cheap spool helped more then anything I bought for it. It was night and day difference on climbing. On dirt you’ll never know the axels are solid like u would on asphalt. Perfect for four wheeling.
Second the best lol
Freiburger?.... Finnegan?..... Just not the same. Need all of the guys. I think Fred is getting stiffed on the video support. Come on MT.... help Fred out and give him some cash and support for the offroad side!
first
Lol when I saw the S10 failing to spin front tires, first thing to pop into my head was 'I bet the vacuum actuator is out'
This was the most un enthusiastic CTC yet. lol It felt like one of them asked "do you want to do a CTC?" and the others were just like *meh.* haha
Making the 4.3 look bad because he couldn’t figure out how to fix the 4x4 lol. Great episode
that international was BEAST!!!!
i wish they did cheap truck challenge twice a year its cool :)
I love my truck me and my dad fixed it from a salvaged wrek. I love these videos
Same here, my 02 Silverado "fatass s10" sat for 5 years with 150000 miles and now it's my daily and hill climber
+Nerf50Cal mines a 94 chevy cheyenne that sat for a good 8 years
Toyota and Cherokee will always win cheap truck IMO
That International truck is pretty interesting, compared to the S10 and Grand Cherokee at least. A brand that often gets forgotten when talking about offroaders/pickup trucks, even older ones.
Love the International.
fred, what happened to that s10? is it still aroud? or possibly for sale? im a s10 freak man. got 2 blazers already. want a s10 to offroad wit. would love that one.
