    Zurich ATC were excellent. Clear and calm communications. They fully understood the high cockpit work load. Checked with the pilot that the landing gear was down and locked! "How's the situation on board" and "just follow the car all the way" quickly established all was ok and kept things easy for the pilots who probably hadn't had a chance to plan any for any ground manoeuvres. Excellent work by all involved.

      @@gerhardhh9787 Yeah, I was watching the map, and given the short distance from the runway to C55, the follow-me car was probably unnecessary. Note that I am NOT criticizing. Given the unusual landing and the anticipated high stress, it was a very nice offer from ATC--just one more accommodation to ease the pilots' stress. Well done!

    Many thanks for uploading this video! I was a passenger on this flight.. FIRST OFF - THANKS to the pilots of Qatari Airways! The flight crew got a bit nervous but overall maintained composure. Of course we were oblivious to what the emergency was, although it was something serious enough to bring us mid flight into ZHR during what was a routine flight when most everybody was asleep, including myself. Most of the passengers found out about the smoke issue as we were able to see news reports about our flight a couple of hours later. THANK GOD WE WERE OVER THE EUROPEAN LANDMASS .. with that happening over the Atlantic the implications would have been dicey to say the least. AGAIN THANKS SWISS ATC and QATARI PILOTS - GOD BLESS.

      I suppose they would opt for the CAT3 approach in case of smoke in cockpit if the smoke is too dense. CAT3 is an autoland approach.

    • @MarkRose1337
      @MarkRose1337 7 лет назад +3

      But in a CAT3 approach, the braking is also controlled, which may be problematic in an overweight landing such as this.

    • @glfsn
      @glfsn 7 лет назад +8

      they opted for a cat 1 approach. This gives the pilot maximum control and the ability to land softly and modulate breaking with the correct flap/spoiler configuration for a potential passenger evacuation. Also, smoke in the flight deck suggests that there may be electrical system damage. It would be unwise to give the aircraft full automatic control when you can't say for sure if these systems have been damaged or not.

      In Germany listening (and even more interfering with) air traffic radio communications is illegal. To take part or listen to air traffic communications you need a "Funkzeugnis", which would mean a radio operator license on the one hand, and even if you have such a license, e.g. as tow driver, Ops or ATC, legally you can only listen to those frequencies on duty.

    what does mayday mean? how is it different from emergency declaration? I watched your other videos, ATC usually asks for souls on board and fuel remaining for emergency, but not in this case. So I guess the two situations are somewhat different.

    • @voatavo2228
      @voatavo2228 6 лет назад +2

      681726 mayday means that theres a direct threat to the safety of the aircraft. A Pan Call means that theres a importent situation, but no direct threat. A Pilot feeling sick is a Pan emergency, a engine fire or a fire onboard is a mayday emergency. If you just say declearing an emergency it doesn't get clear weather or not there's a direct threat to the aircraft

      You can declare an emergency both ways, if you do not state the nature of the emergency immediately, they will ask for sure.
      Just declaring an emergency can most often be found while kind of checked in and in some sort of established communication. The MAYDAY or PAN PAN code words repeated three times are intended in radio communication ( not only aircraft but also ships for example ) to be easily recognized and catching attention from any stations listening. Especially on ships for example while listening to the radio in the background you start to kind of filter and only get more alert and actively listen if you recognize your callsigns Bering addressed or something like suche Code words.
      Furthermore in Radio communications such code words usually call for a certain radio discipline and not possibly interrupting or blocking frequency.

    • @DCSMustang
      @DCSMustang 5 лет назад +3

      If you have a plane with too much weight, you have to flare really gently as not to overstress the airframe on touchdown. The crew of the 777 couldn't dump fuel until this point because of system problems, so they expected to land too heavy. The CAT3 with autoland lands the plane by autopilot with a preset flare maneuver made for normal weights, the pilots wouldn't be able to control the softness of the touchdown, so I assume, thats why they requested the CAT1 approach.

    Good job by everyone but really baffled how a most basic (and potentially critical) RTF phraseology rule is not respected by Swiss ATC in this instance. E.g. it must never be "descend TO 5000ft", but "descend 5000ft". The "TO" uttered before the altitude clearance can easily be misunderstood for a "TWO", creating a totally unnecessary risk of misunderstanding with regard to the actually cleared altitude. In this particular case this risk of misunderstanding was admittedly neglibible, but considering how consistently the "TO" was used before the altitude value, I suspect it's a systematic issue. Really really odd, and not very professional, to be honest. Serious incidents and near misses have been the result of this...
