Beautiful. When I bought my first fly rod back in the 1980’s, this was one of the selection of flies Mr Halstead from Halstead and Compton fishing tackle shop put into my newly bought fly box. Lovely evocative memories for me.

    Hi Davie,
This is one on my favourite flies for summer brook trout, unfortunately we do not have access to snipe under the migratory bird act over 'ere. So I tried the shoulder covert from a starling wing instead when I ran out(from the one snipe I managed to pot with my licence), and it worked out to be a good sub. The brookies did not notice the counterfit at all.
    All the best Davie,
    Peter

    Hi Davie,
I have now tried Superior Kimono silk, YLI 100wt silk, and Pearsall's Gossamer silk threads to tie soft hackles. All three threads worked very well and all were easy to tie with and turned out a nice looking fly. Pearsall's is wound the tightest and seems the thinnest of the three, with YLI close behind, and Kimono wound loosest and seemingly slightly thicker. When winding the thread forward to create segmentation, I liked the effect of the Kimono silk the best.
    Best regards, Bruce

Thank you so much for sharing your videos. You have inspired me to get back into fly tying again. I really appreciate how you show as much passion and care in tying this soft hackle as you do in tying your Atlantic Salmon flies. A question for you if you have time. I recently came across Superior Threads website and ordered their sample cards of Kimono silk. This silk is fine diameter and looks like it will work for soft hackle tying. Do you have any experience with this brand of silk?

Brilliant tying. You used to have a partridge and orange didn't you? It would be nice to see that again, or any other spider patterns. It's good to hear that subs work too, as it is a bit difficult getting all the different types of feather. I'm sure the old timers just used what they had to hand a lot of the time. Thanks again for all the help.

Hey Davie, You must have the worlds biggest fly box! The recommendation of having "one in your box" I don't have enough boxes to keep them all in even if I only took one of each! I did get some snipe from Veniards and will tie some of these for the river. I have no idea when I will fish them, but when I do, I won't have to tye for a long time. All the best, Sean

THE easiest trout fly for a novice to tie and catch fish with. I'm still using them after 60 years.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you fish this fly? ( e.g. Where in the water column? ) I'm more of a nymph fisherman and tend to fish closer to the bottom. I can picture fishing it in tandem with a dry fly, or behind beaded nymph.

Not only educational but relaxing and calming watching your videos then I go and spoil it by attempting to catch fish ,bang goes those moments of tranquility my blood pressure shoots up much better than the shooting line I’m using and then the crushing pain hits as I try and strike with every take eventually realising the hook I’m using is broken I debarred it before I started to fish but must have been overzealous as I squeezed the pliers both flies I’m using are broken Is it sabotage was it my son getting back at me for not giving him the freedom of my fly box? One fly damaged OK but two ten I spot huge grins on the faces of onlookers as well as my son and son-in-law laughter breaks out along the banks and I throw a tantrum I’m not laughing either my evenings fishing was over before I started plus I cant even use the broken flies as decorations on my hat But I get home take my meds and open my iPad as I sit down to watch your latest upload and other videos on my preferred list of previously watched videos letting the relaxing sounds wash over me Once again Davie thanks for all you efforts Tight lines

Those silk threads are hard to come by in the US. Would a white 210 marked with a purple marker work? Also, snipe is not available. Maybe quail covert feather?

      Hi David,
It's certainly worth a try as I've coloured many a thread over the years and it works for me..If you want to try tying with silk then I would recommend Yli Silk as it's as good as the old Pearsalls silks so I have attached a link to them for you to see..quiltdirect.co.uk/collections/yli-pure-silk-thread-100

verhampshire ( and others) .If you have small spools of thread you can get adaptors that fit between the small spools and the legs of the bobbin holder to take up the space ..They work well

    Hi Davie,
And thank you hunthicks, I was mistaken and I apologise if I misled anyone. We can indeed buy snipe wings under the Canada migratory act, 12.1.
So I hoped to provide you with a possible source over 'ere, but no one seems to have them.I guess the best bet would be to order them from over there, Glasgow Angling Centre maybe?
    All the best, Peter

Davie, why do these spider patterns not have tails? I would think it could only improve the action of the fly. But I will tie as is, who am I to change this classic that works? I just wondered why they don't have tails. All the best, Sean

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 лет назад +2

      Hi James,
Woodcock is a good feather to use though I would look more for a grey coloured one like starling or what I have used when I first started tying wets was mallard duck and I did catch a lot of fish with it....
