If you look at every perimeter player's FG% around that time who was a volume scorer like Tmac, Kobe, AI, iso Joe, Truth etc. 41-45% was normal. You may be wondering why because its not like the players I just named are scrubs. Its because of the spacing. The zone is designed to keep players from driving in and incentivizing players to shoot instead. Back then teams had one or maybe two 3pt shooters in their line up. Even then they were not incentivized to take 3s and since there were not enough shooters on the court to stretch out the defense, players like Kobe and Tmac were forced to take long 2s and contested jumpers every single night because there was no lane for them to drive in. MJ played in an era with illegal defense rules (ie you must commit a hard double or stay with your man, you are not allowed to drift around and "help" your teammates on defense) so of course he was going to shoot 50%, single coverage is too easy for him. If Tmac or Kobe only had to worry about a single defender, I promise you their FGs are going to be much higher because these were dudes who could not be covered one on one. This is also why games ended with scores like 80-77 back then. You never see that shit nowdays and the most obvious reason for that is because of spacing.
