Chad, FANTASTIC. I took what you were explaining here and with a few tweaks to the Shatter effect was able to make a rotating 3d logo. Thanks very much for the tutorial.
Great tutorial. I've ben searching for this or ages and your tutorial is the only well explained one that works and is free and easy to use. Great job!
Hi Chad, Thanks for this, I was surprised to see there wasn't a more simple way or menu selection in After Effects by default to do this. It's funny that when I searched for a solution I found this video since I have watched hundreds of hours of them on Lynda. BTW, you are by far my favorite author amongst the many talents on Lynda. Keep up the great work and thanks again. Dan
THANKS BRO, this tutorial is rocking. I have so many plugins to make normal text layer into 3D text layer, but they are to much complicated to use but this is really awesome. THANKS Again.......
in the effect settings for shatter, change all the settings in Force 1 and Force 2 to 0. These will be whats causing it to 'blow apart' Very nice tut too, super simple stuff and it looks ace :D Thanks
Thank You so much for this tutorial! I use Apple Shake (Amazing Program) but now I'm working with AE. I'm new to it but you just made it seem a lot easier! Thanks for the tutorial and keep it up!
Wow. You're totally right. RUclips must have cut off my original explanation. That sucks. Oh well. Basically, objects Shatter because Force 1 comes into contact with the object (your layer). If you want to stop the shattering, don't let the force touch your layer. Adjust it by playing with the Depth parameter in the Force 1 area (NOT the Force 2 area). This tutorial was meant for more advanced users that would already know Shatter, but I didn't realize how many others would like it, too. Sorry.
Great presentation!!!! Enthusiasm, a little fun straight to the point and NO FREAKIN ACCENT!!!! Comparing you to someone else of After Effects training is ignorant. I am looking for more of your lessons. Great job!!!! Cool very usable stuff!!!!
great stuff guys, thanks! there's a minor hitch - you gotta use the effect's camera and light (there's an option to use comp camera within the effect settings but you lose 3d) - I suppose it can be worked around by linking the parameters... will give it a try :)
3D titles with mirror reflections in AE project "Arena titles " - plus lens flare effects were made by standard AE tools - without third party plugins.
Really, really helpful! I started playing with and found a lot of possibilities with this! to freeze ir just go to Shape> and check White Tiles Fixed. that would keep it. I also found that you can work with your comp's camera and light! sweet! thanks again!
AE can import PSD files with live 3D objects in them, and move them in 3D space. But if you followed this tutorial correctly, the objects you create with Shatter will also be 3D, and you'll be able to rotate them fine using the Shatter effect controls. You can also change the camera in the Shatter controls to use the first comp camera.
Thanks! Yeah, you can actually go into the Force 1 area, and change the depth so that the force never comes into contact with the object. Use the wireframe view for a more visual way to do this. Radius makes the explosion area smaller, so that can work as well. Also, as I mentioned above, because this trick is a function of the Shatter effect, it really pays to get a handle on all the different parameters of Shatter in order to really master this trick. Thanks again for your comments!
To stop the shattering you can also just click white tiles fixed box, as well as keyframe it on & off. Much easier then changing ALL the force settings to 0.
Wow! We were about to purchase Cinema4D for some basic 3D text design stuff, but it looks like I can just create it now in AE. Thanks a lot. Perhaps I'll play around with the effect and the text to create more "dazzling" looking text.
for great results, 1 solo out the frame, 2 render frame as file (png) and use the post render option to import, 3 add to timeline and postition where you need it, then apply shatter, drop all forces to zero, 4 adjust camera transforms and use keyframe to animate. easy!
doesnt matter know ive done it:) thanks alot for the tutorial really good. im suscribing. can u tell me a good exporting/rendering quality to use because i export them at a high quality and like 10 second intros are like 60MB?
That's Amazing! Quick Question. Is their a way I can stop the Shattering Effect from Happening? Maybe make it rotate or stay static? You'll have to excuse me because I just started playing with AE This Morning. This is my First Effect. Thanks!
That's Amazing! My Question is Can I Stop the text from Shattering and either make it rotate or stay static? You have to excuse me, I just started playing with AE this morning. Your my first effect.
Fantastic tutorial! I've used this trick with great success, using two copies of a poker chip to create a real 3d model of it! Now, a problem: I can't figure out how to postpone the shatter from happening. There doesn't even appear to be a keyframe that slows the effect - so I'm left with only a frame or two before it blows. Any advice?
@Trevahhh all depends how many times you want it to spin around but I would use some mask/shape to hide the part in the building to look like the "3d" is going behind. Hope this helps.
the effect worked great for me to a point. how do you keep the text in place??? when i moved down the time line the text shattered off. (also a cool effect but not what i needed at the time)
This is really cool and thanks for the tutorial. But, how do I make my new 3D text move around? For example, setting the camera angle I know how to do, but then the text shatters over time in the timeline. Is there a way I can just keep it the way it is at frame 0 or do I have to leave it with the shatter effect continuing like it does?
I have an older version of After Effects (v 5.5) that doesn't have the text tool. I tried your shatter effect method by creating a solid with basic text, but it wouldn't work. I tried importing text from Photoshop and put a luma key on it, that didn't work either. Any idea of how I can create 3D text in my older version of After Effects? Good stuff by the way! :-)
1. Place a video or create a solid 2. Create a text layer (a word whatever) 3. Place shatter ON THE IMMAGE OR SOLID NOT TO THE TEXT 4. remove the "eye" on the text layer so on the timeline text is invisible 5. Choose in shatter options (effect controls) View - rendered 6. Pattern = custom 7. Cutom shatter map = your text 8. increase extrusion depth to say 1.16 9. force 1 = 0 strength 10. force 2 = 0 strength 11. Physics >> Gravity = 0 (so you dont have ur text to fall down) 12. Rotate y camera
That is so kewl, works perfect but is there a way to stop the shatter effect, i'm trying to use this effect to make simple 3d buildings as a camera scans around them but obviously as time goes on they all move as the shatter effect comes into play, any help would be sweet!
I still have the background picture showing around the text on mine, with the text shattering out from the centre of the background picture. How do you get rid of the background picture from around the text? Cheers.
I'm sorry. I'm not familiar with After Effects in different languages. Is there a Simulation menu? If you can find the Spanish version of that, Shatter will be there. If you find it, can you post it here for others?
Totally! You can set that up in the Shatter effect options (towards the bottom). You just set Shatter's "camera" to your comp camera. Because this trick is essentially a function of the Shatter effect, if this trick is important to you, it pays to master the other features of Shatter. Hope this helps, thanks for watching, thanks for commenting, and I'm not on crack. It's just a freaking rad trick. -Chad
@mrtug thats an idea...but i dont think it would solve my problem, i need a project where i can change the text and be able to put that into other projects and make the text stay in place while camera moves, for example.
do u have 2 save the text? cos when i try to choose the custom shatter pattern the text isnt there? and when i just type it in it gives me two lots of texts. one 3D and one 2D? (sorry very new to adobe after effects)
Well it's 3d, if you're only going to use this for the text. The problem is that if you need other things to rotate in relation to the text, it doesn't work as this text will appear flat. I think you can link the rotation to the camera's position, but it would just end up being more of a headache than what you can do otherwise. I'll be linking a Video Response showing what I mean. Thanks for the video :)
I love the internet, thank you for not being monotone and boring, or like every other andrew kramer tutorial. Very helpful.
Chad, FANTASTIC. I took what you were explaining here and with a few tweaks to the Shatter effect was able to make a rotating 3d logo. Thanks very much for the tutorial.
hey man thanks for the great vid! your one of the only people online helping people do awesome things without plug-ins and expensive effects.
Great tutorial. I've ben searching for this or ages and your tutorial is the only well explained one that works and is free and easy to use. Great job!
DUDE@!!!! I was about to fork out $500 for proanimator and you just showed me how to do the same exact effects!!!! Thanks! You rock!
Super tutorial, u are the next Andrew Kramer ;)
Hi Chad,

Dan
Selecting 'white tiles fixed' gave me exactly what I was after. A static 3D text. Thanks for this.
YES, This is what I needed. I'm working on a production logo for someone and I didn't want to use the alpha bevel. Duplicating layers.
THANK YOU!
this is still one of my favorite of the favorite After Effects tute! thank you so very much!
Amazing! I've been scouring the internet for days looking for how to create 3d text in ae! Thank you so much!
THANKS BRO, this tutorial is rocking. I have so many plugins to make normal text layer into 3D text layer, but they are to much complicated to use but this is really awesome.
THANKS Again.......
sick man, i salute you for making these vids, you are doing the world a great service!
You are the man chad, I have been trying to figure out how to do this for a loooong time.....
Awesome, Jeff! Your text looks great. Thanks for watching!
in the effect settings for shatter, change all the settings in Force 1 and Force 2 to 0.
These will be whats causing it to 'blow apart'
Very nice tut too, super simple stuff and it looks ace :D
Thanks

I have to say I learned all the basics and then some from Chad's Rock Solid Foundation on VTC. Very good videos!!!
That's brilliant. Awesome effect, nicely explained. Thanks a lot, man.
Thanks for posting this! This was just in time for a project I'm working on!
wow chad, you made it sound so easy...love it! and i am gonna try it!
This does actually work with camera movement. There's a built in camera in Shatter, and you can also set Shatter to use the first comp camera.
Great Tut! Thanks Adrian for the shatter settings.
Awewsome!
Great effect, easy, perfect for a begginer as I am!
thanks sooo much!
Great presentation!!!! Enthusiasm, a little fun straight to the point and NO FREAKIN ACCENT!!!! Comparing you to someone else of After Effects training is ignorant.

wow...i was thinking of messing around with cc glass for 3D text...but this is perfect!!!
To stop the shattering you can also just click white tiles fixed box, as well as keyframe it on & off. Much easier then changing ALL the force settings to 0.
Very cool workaround. Thanks for sharing guys!
Thanks soo much dude! I will use this on many of my videos!
Great tutorial. Your voice makes me feel like i should sign up 3 years for something
Got it! Setting a keyframe for "Radius" (withing the force categories) at a value of zero holds the explosion indefinitely.
Wow! We were about to purchase Cinema4D for some basic 3D text design stuff, but it looks like I can just create it now in AE. Thanks a lot. Perhaps I'll play around with the effect and the text to create more "dazzling" looking text.
Wow, great tutorial! Wish I would of known this when I was editing a friends DVD.
3D space in AE project "Arena titles " - plus lens flare effects were made by standard AE tools - without third party plugins.
really good post, gona definetly try that one...im on mac and wanted to know what ur using to record your screen
..thank you
wow i cannot believe i didnt use shatter to do this, im going to try it. Thank you for this little trick!
wow this is exciting, now i could do 3d text effect on my video, thanks. how do i get the picture back on so i could add the the 3d text on top of it.
omg that is a new thing i didnt know so i would like to thank you for showing how to do this so Thank You!
Indeed a VERY exciting Episode! Thanks for sharing! What an awesome community!
where I can find the largest (most members) Adobe After Effects forum?
wonderful work Chad... thanks a lot. will ry it out.
great tutorial. you seem so happy - great to listen! greets from Germany ;)
for great results, 1 solo out the frame, 2 render frame as file (png) and use the post render option to import, 3 add to timeline and postition where you need it, then apply shatter, drop all forces to zero, 4 adjust camera transforms and use keyframe to animate. easy!
Very nice tutorial for those who don't know much about AE.
Great tutorial! If you don't want your text to fall apart, just change the "Depth" under "Force1" to -1 =). I think you forgot to tell us that.
doesnt matter know ive done it:) thanks alot for the tutorial really good. im suscribing. can u tell me a good exporting/rendering quality to use because i export them at a high quality and like 10 second intros are like 60MB?
thank u 4 the tutorial

TNXS BUDDIE
Thanks! you made it look easy and fun at the same time :)
WTG !!!
great tut! very clear and easy to use!
TNX!
You guys are awesome. Keep up the good work.
Click the Collapse Transformation button in the Switches column of the Timeline panel on the nested composition layer in the parent comp.
That's Amazing! Quick Question. Is their a way I can stop the Shattering Effect from Happening? Maybe make it rotate or stay static? You'll have to excuse me because I just started playing with AE This Morning. This is my First Effect. Thanks!
man u just kicked my ass... I had seen some amazing tricks on AE... but this one is just so simple and efficient...
Double thumbs up...
i love how you talk and well explained :) thanks for making tis video! :)

Thank you! I suppose I can do this with an effect? For example a windshield hit (Action Movie Essentials 2)
genius loophole. Love this.

Omg Chad!
This video made my day xD
Thanks so much :P
You are totally welcome! More good stuff coming soon, including how to make fire from scratch in After Effects.
When you've all done these things.
How can I change the color of the text then?
Help?
ps. Thnx for the tutorial!
@mrtug thats an idea...but i dont think it would solve my problem, i need a project where i can change the text and be able to put that into other projects and make the text stay in place while camera moves, for example.
thank you so much, you did a good tutorial
thanx for info on recording software

Nice trick Mr. Perkins....thanx
wow this is exciting, now i could do 3d text effect on my video, thanks.
that is an incredible tip.
thankyou VERY much!
Yo chad, you are the shiznicks man! Keep up the outstanding work!!! LAterz!

@Trevahhh sure, bro. Hope to see some day your project done.
It's very helpful and easy too. thanx
really good tutorial! thnx, chad!
Once you apply the effect, click the drop down arrows next to "Force 1" and "Force 2" Set ALL values to "0".
Amazing tutorial!Thanks!
