  • Oregon State and Washington State absolutely have a path to one day building the Pac-12 into the premier G5 conference in all of college football. As they plot their next moves on that front, patience is indeed a virtue for the 'Pac-2'.
    On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLauglin dives into the potentially precarious and cautionary tale of SMU as they dive into the ACC in 2024. Will expansion really help save some future version of the Pac-12 in the current media landscape?
    Spencer also takes a look at grading each Pac-12 team's performance in 2023 compared to their expectations as he hands out his annual grades. Plus, what will happen with the Pac-12 bowl game tie-ins now that the league has just two teams left?

    Spencer My Main Man!
    I have an idea for the pac-12 being a Group of 5 football only champion conference. The lowest ranked conference seed would return to its original conference and be replaced by the new conference champion. Rival week would play the conference seeds against one another. With 5 group of 5 conferences the PAC would always have 10 plus OSU & WSU locked in founder seeds.
    OSU & WSU could play out of conference Non-G5 regional schools to bolster schedule strength in former PAC schools, which would reduce travel costs for all schools involved.
    Being a conference made of only G5 champions it may allow the PAC to argue in the expanded playoff era it fills a Power conference role by always having the previous seasons best G5 schools. And those schools would get access to more money, assuming PAC can put together a good TV deal.
    Thoughts?

    Did you see the article on Oregon Live? Indeed there is a clause in the scheduling contract that states if the PAC 12 only invite select MW schools before 2027 they would have to pay over $10 million dollars for each school. Taking 6 MW schools would cost OSU and WSU $67.5 million. Plus the buyouts for the AAC schools.
    That's a lot of money just to create a G5 conference with a G5 level TV deal.

    • @HarveyFloyd

    OSU and WSU will definitely rebuild the Pac12. Joining the MWC (5M a year) or the AAC (10M a year) is too big of a drop-off from the Power 5 (30M+ a year). Aim for a new TV deal in the 15M+ range. They should target the top Western teams in the G5, to build the clear No. 5 conference and lock down a football playoff spot each season, with some hoops power for more TV tournament cash.
    I would target the following teams:
    Fresno State, Boise State, Air Force, Tulane, UTSA, New Mexico State, and Memphis have had 10-win football seasons in the past 2 years (in addition to Oregon State).
    Gonzaga (hoops only), UNLV and San Diego State would add some hoops cachet/tradition (along with Memphis).
    Finally, throwing in a few bigger TV markets could increase the TV deal (if only to provide more potential viewers for the good teams, not necessarily the local teams): Rice (Houston), North Texas (Dallas), San Jose State (SF Bay area), and Colorado State (Denver). It would help with recruiting too.
    Alternates if any of the above aren't interested: Hawaii (recruiting), Louisiana (football), Utah State (market).

    • @jimanest
      @jimanest 8 месяцев назад

      Target the growing front range. CSU & Air Force. Wyoming is a definite in the front range as well since it has been a big part of the Denver market for 60+ years. Huge Wyoming alum base in Colorado
      and top tier fan following. New Mexico with the new coach will be an improved.
      Then add Tulane and UTSA and Texas State. Louisiana!
      Boise State; Nevada, Fresno, San Diego State, UNLV.
      Utah State?
      DANG GOOD NEW PAC12
      Montana would be a good addition if they will step up with additional $$

    As a long time Fresno State Fan and alum, who has suffered the disrespect of the PAC 10/12 for 20 years, I must remind the Beavs and Coug fans that the MW will not be a pushover. As Spencer said yesterday what great QBs the PAC 12 had this year (and he is right for this year). Well if you check the NFL facts, the MWC has three NFL team starters at QB, which is exactly the same as the PAC 12 and Big 10 conferences. The best part of my argument is that it will be decided in the next two years.
    For me the PAC 2 needs to form the best football product to “sell” the media rights in two years. A 16 team two tier conference with promotion relegation would ensure a good game to promote for the “after dark” slot every week. Over time I see all the conferences will go to the upper and lower tiers when the upper tier teams get tired of lower tier teams taking equal big football media payouts and putting an inferior product on the field year after year.
    Spencer as you move to the LO Collage Football frame, I would like you to develop these topics more. Just a suggestion.

      Yeah, it would cost 10 mil per school, increasing by 500k, if a school is invited and accepts, before a two year anniversary. It would all be waived with a merger. So, inviting 4 teams would be 10+10.5+11+11.5 just for 4, plus some other charges and fees. Still, It might actually be worth it to the two school.

  • @Spitfirethedragon
    @Spitfirethedragon 8 месяцев назад +2

    MWC and ACC schools have an upper hand. None will break away from their conference to go to join the PAC 2 since that conference don't have a tv deal. The MWC schools could play hardball and have the PAC to merge and then grab the AAC schools and the two Dakota schools and maybe the Montanas as well. USF is too far east. I could look at Missouri State or Toledo.

    • @atgdcommish608

      The MWC teams get 5M a year in a TV deal. The AAC teams get 10M a year. They would join the Pac in a heartbeat if the new TV deal is 15M or so, with the inside track to an automatic football playoff bid.

    For instance what if they got a ratings based contract from Amazon and they paid out members for each individual game based on ratings? They still get more than they would get in the MWC because they get more viewers than MWC teams but they might attract some bigger schools(which by playing them would increase their own ratings) to join the conference. Hey FSU you can keep most of your TV revenue. The only schools you have to share it with are the schools you played that year.

    In football, there was no dividing line among conferences before the FBS decided to crown an "official" champion. Actually, it was never an "official" decision of the FBS. Rather it was an agreement with either the media or coaches (I forget which) to automatically vote the winner of the BCS as the FBS champion in the poll. At that time, they set up a system which included the selection of teams in the newly designated "New Year 6" bowls. The conferences that had such contracts were designated BCS conferences. There were 6 such conferences. At the same time the FBS schools switched from the "BCS" to the "CFP", the Orange Bowl switched its conference tie from the Big East/American to a combination of the SEC, B1G, and Notre Dame (which is why ND is always ineligible for the ACC's selection to the Orange Bowl). This is what in effect dropped the Big East/American from the so-called "power" conferences.
    So, in the past, it was those conferences that had guaranteed ties to certain bowl games that were called by the media as "power" conferences. This was always unofficial. At some point in the process, the NCAA did officially vote certain rights to make rules to 5 conferences, and those were known as the Autonomy 5 conferences. Officially, that's where we stand today.
    However, as a practical matter, never in its history has the highest level of American collegiate football ever had 1 Supreme Entity governing the entire sport including crowning a champion. The NCAA came close until the 1980's, but the schools themselves never granted the NCAA the authority to decide who the national champion was at the highest level. This is why multiple media outlets and associations crowned their chosen schools national champions and in many years we have multiple national champions.
