The good and the bad about Mystic Mine: The good: It was a very easy deck for new players to get in the game and it was fairly cheap. I started out playing a Mystic Mine/Dinosaur deck and it helped me get back into the game. The bad: It’s Mystic Mine.
Maybe not Mystic Mine itself, but the good thing about cards like this is that nobody wants to play a deck that immediately lose to one card, so it encourages better deckbuilding.
I'm surprised they didn't mention one of the biggest reason why Mystic Mine took so long to finally be problematic: Imperial Order and its influence in deckbuilding. As a popular main/side deck card, IO demanded immediate backrow removal (Twister, Cyclone, Typhoon) and also completely countered most burn Mine lists since they rely on spells to actually win the game. It's no surprise that Mine became public enemy N°1 after the February '22 list.
Another reason what made Mystic Mine so egregious compared to other 'Floodgate' cards is the fact that Field Spells are far, far more searchable and easier to turbo out. You're nearly guaranteed to see it every game compared to 'Floodgate' cards like Skill Drain, Macro Cosmos, D Fissure etc. This gets overlooked so often imo when people say Mystic Mine is not so bad. If Mystic Mine was a Continuous Spell/Trap, it wouldn't have been nearly as bad.

Not sure why y'all chose to run a deck against its direct counter. Draco striker has like a 99:1 against mystic mine, that was one of the main reasons to play the deck back in this time period
Cuz no one wants to watch a giant 20 hour mine video plus showing off the deck without its counters is pretty inaccurate You can argue not seeing Mine do what it does is also inaccurate but it's just really not fun in a video meant for entertainment, and also that like. Mystic Mine is not exactly a hard card to understand the implications of, especially when people aren't siding spell trap removal. You look at it, Final Countdown, and Cauldron of the Old Man, and immediately understand the win condition: Sit there for however long it takes, and hope your opponent doesn't draw, or have, the out, then win.

That's literally a deck tailor made not to care and to out mine easily as hell. Edit: yeah that was an EASY walkover for Draco Striker. Unwinnable for Cimooo really. Probably should have put Mine up vs a different deck.
So the first iteration of mystic mine wasn't this spell version. That came later. The original one was the chain burn one with Lilith and Trap Trick with Metaverse at 3. That version ruined the ocg (mashoudou) for a while so metaverse was limited pretty quickly in the tcg
I'll never forget my first regional a couple years ago I played someone with a mine burn deck. His first turn he gave me d.d. guide and I was like, cool? I played floo lmao
Mine player should run 3x Pathfinder, to add field spell to hand. Pathfinder tributes itself also, which is perfect to have less monsters than opponent.
they really printed "every turn fateseal 3 for free" and this is the first time I'm seeing it? I guess it only really works in stall but that's so problematic to just have be available if the stall deck ever becomes relevant.
I remember back when I still played every time was in my possession I would rip it to shreds no matter the cost. I'd rather prevent one more person from playing with/against mystic mine than take the dirty money from selling/trading the card.
See look, I'm an average Master Peace enjoyer who says he can come back to this day as he did nothing wrong, True Draco Sky Striker was such a fun build to play and won a tournament between my buddies
As a fan of the True Draco archetype, unfortunately I have to say that Master Peace is too good to be allowed back into the game. The fact that it no-sells 2 different card types while in play AND has a quickie pop AND is searchable in every deck running Diagram proves as much. I'd rather that be a relic of a bygone era just like the rest of the 2017 era cards.
My theory about Mystic Mine was that they were trying to create a more balanced version of Kaiser Colosseum. Instead of KC not letting you have more monsters at all, Mine does let you have more, but just turns them off while you have more. The thing they forgot to do was copy over KC’s condition of the controller having at least one monster. If Mine had that condition, it would have been fine, and probably ends up closer to what Konami intended. Makes you have to use all your monsters as material for one dude to go 1vs1 with.
Both of these decks.... Work sooo much better, if they go up against orcust, Thunder or Salad or even dragons.... Shows off their strengths better too 😢
As a stun player, I hate mystic mine. It ruined the TCG for stun players for YEARS, where there were tons of super interesting stun and stall strategies that just end up being worse than mystic mine in every imaginable way despite being more interactive.
Quick Question, would Mystic Mine get sent from the field when Field Barrier is up if its text said "Send this card to the Graveyard"? Wouldnt that have been a decent errata to always keep the option up to get rid of it by equalizing the monsters rather than having to break Field Barrier first?
You're correct. Field Barrier specifically prevents field spells from being destroyed, it does not stop them from being sent to the graveyard. As for whether or not the card could have been errata'd, *maybe*, but that interaction with Field Barrier was hardly the reason it got banned, it's just something that occasionally comes up.
It still doesn't solve the problem of mystic mine stall/burn existing. There's no good way to equalize the number of monsters on the field if your opponent has 0 monsters.
Its the problem of "Im going to dedicate space to battle meta" which was mainly combo... just to have something like mystic mine exist. Like... so if i board to stop mine... my matchups with other decks get severly worse. But if i dont do it and i play against mine i lose. I know joseph has been on the "yugioh players need to learn the ways of playing after game three" But its really hard to do that when the gameplay at that time was dependent on it... just to have this messy conundrum of boarding into mst just to get beaten up by other decks. Its just not a cool card. Promoted more degeneracy than actual good play. If you wanted yugioh players to understand grind game. You gotta just play a different game.
Early Master Duel had a very similar problem, you needed to tech against monster combo decks like Drytron/VW or Eldlich floodgate decks, and you had to fit it all in your main deck because there's no siding.

I don't think you get to decide what proper deck building is and I don't see how running unsearchable S/T removal that's gonna get solemned anyways is proper deck building either especially when the majority of decks are monster based. Tbh running S/T removal blind sounds more like improper deck building to me.

Everydeck I run today played the trinity just like every deck plays non searchable ash, or droll imperm etc. You can make room for them make room for mst or cyclone . Most decks have field spells or cont cards.. if a solemn is wasted on a mst that's a win ...wait you only had one mst...so sorry... Like I played Yu-Gi-Oh before every build was turbo , you can build decks that are mid range. Nobody wants to play them and therefore a large majority are subject to cards like these who punish poor deck building. I'm not saying mine is perfect but I am saying s/t removing used to be big and has been pushed out. It's great to have a card that forces players to respect actually backrow removal.

Prepare for the actual meta decks, or go for the mine counters doing both makes both at times terrible even top players hated it when the opponent combos and they ended up drawing spell and trap removal. Mystic mine ain't a large gaping hole a large gaping hole is the weakness the deck itself has in the form of its playstyle. Mystic Mine is a gatekeeping card for the viability of decks with limited space. Almost all pendulum decks for example have extremely limited deckspace due to their inherent nature of needing scales. That's their weakness and because of that they can barely even afford to run triple ash, imperm, veiler, etc. If they did manage to fit those in they auto lose to mine however if they sided for mine they auto lose to the min engine. Like I said it ain't building the deck wrong it's just that some decks can't be built with an out to everything. Also it ain't your fault for running it. It's Konami's fault for even designing such a badly made card. Yu-Gi-Oh is about winning so you use the cards that are legal to win. No one's blaming you for that as degenerate as the playstyle is. You can't expect someone to have an answer to every card in the game that's being super unrealistic. If a solemn is wasted on an MST that's one out gone. The mine player can run far more outs to backrow removal than a monster based deck can run backrow removal for mine. Why do you assume only combo decks lose to mine? It's any deck that needs monsters to get going that loses to mine. Also the current meta is literally midrange/control with like 1-2 combo decks and last I checked mine currently isn't legal. Backrow removal is also used against decks like rescue Ace and Labrynth which are once again the current meta decks. We don't need broken floodgates for that. Just by there being a top tier trap deck in the meta people have actually been running backrow removal.
I expect marincess will be a “history of Jank” feature. There’s a small chance it’ll show up in history when they do 2022 Nats format, but it’ll be a surprise
The only way Mine can come back is if Konami goes back to the old field spell rule where players can only have one field spell on the field. Or they unban Imperial order to 3 along with Mine.

The worst instance of mystic mine imo wasnt this but its use in pure monster combo decks like Drytron: In game 2 or 3 youd be forced to side in stuff like Droll, Dark ruler, kaijus, etc. to avoid being ftkd by drytrons 6 negate board, but then theyd go 2nd randomly, activate mystic mine and all your side board was useless. You could then side in a duster but by the time you hit it they just did full combo under mine and otkd you.
The card that single-handedly ruined a friendship between me and someone. I have said in the past how much I despise that card and they told me that they would never play it and when I was literally about to swing in with lethal damage, what did they do, activate this bullshit and I sat there for almost 35 minutes! And when they finally committed a monster, I just impermed it would’ve absolutely rocked their world if I got a turn, but they scooped. I was livid to say the least.

The original one was the chain burn one with Lilith and Trap Trick with Metaverse at 3. That version ruined the ocg (mashoudou) for a while so metaverse was limited pretty quickly in the tcg

Mine player should run 3x Pathfinder, to add field spell to hand. Pathfinder tributes itself also, which is perfect to have less monsters than opponent.

I remember back when I still played every time was in my possession I would rip it to shreds no matter the cost. I'd rather prevent one more person from playing with/against mystic mine than take the dirty money from selling/trading the card.
See look, I'm an average Master Peace enjoyer who says he can come back to this day as he did nothing wrong, True Draco Sky Striker was such a fun build to play and won a tournament between my buddies
As a fan of the True Draco archetype, unfortunately I have to say that Master Peace is too good to be allowed back into the game. The fact that it no-sells 2 different card types while in play AND has a quickie pop AND is searchable in every deck running Diagram proves as much.
I'd rather that be a relic of a bygone era just like the rest of the 2017 era cards.

My theory about Mystic Mine was that they were trying to create a more balanced version of Kaiser Colosseum.
Instead of KC not letting you have more monsters at all, Mine does let you have more, but just turns them off while you have more.
The thing they forgot to do was copy over KC’s condition of the controller having at least one monster. If Mine had that condition, it would have been fine, and probably ends up closer to what Konami intended. Makes you have to use all your monsters as material for one dude to go 1vs1 with.

As a stun player, I hate mystic mine. It ruined the TCG for stun players for YEARS, where there were tons of super interesting stun and stall strategies that just end up being worse than mystic mine in every imaginable way despite being more interactive.

You're correct. Field Barrier specifically prevents field spells from being destroyed, it does not stop them from being sent to the graveyard. As for whether or not the card could have been errata'd, *maybe*, but that interaction with Field Barrier was hardly the reason it got banned, it's just something that occasionally comes up.
It still doesn't solve the problem of mystic mine stall/burn existing. There's no good way to equalize the number of monsters on the field if your opponent has 0 monsters.

"Im going to dedicate space to battle meta" which was mainly combo... just to have something like mystic mine exist.
Like... so if i board to stop mine... my matchups with other decks get severly worse. But if i dont do it and i play against mine i lose.

Early Master Duel had a very similar problem, you needed to tech against monster combo decks like Drytron/VW or Eldlich floodgate decks, and you had to fit it all in your main deck because there's no siding.

I don't think you get to decide what proper deck building is and I don't see how running unsearchable S/T removal that's gonna get solemned anyways is proper deck building either especially when the majority of decks are monster based. Tbh running S/T removal blind sounds more like improper deck building to me.

If you lose to mystic mine you obviously built your deck wrong. If one card kills your deck and you know it exist and have no answers for it how is that my fault? Ygo players have the choice of consistency turbo defense and in betweens . The only excuse is you ddnt want to so you get punished.
Everydeck I run today played the trinity just like every deck plays non searchable ash, or droll imperm etc. You can make room for them make room for mst or cyclone . Most decks have field spells or cont cards.. if a solemn is wasted on a mst that's a win ...wait you only had one mst...so sorry... Like I played Yu-Gi-Oh before every build was turbo , you can build decks that are mid range. Nobody wants to play them and therefore a large majority are subject to cards like these who punish poor deck building. I'm not saying mine is perfect but I am saying s/t removing used to be big and has been pushed out. It's great to have a card that forces players to respect actually backrow removal.

Prepare for the actual meta decks, or go for the mine counters doing both makes both at times terrible even top players hated it when the opponent combos and they ended up drawing spell and trap removal. Mystic mine ain't a large gaping hole a large gaping hole is the weakness the deck itself has in the form of its playstyle. Mystic Mine is a gatekeeping card for the viability of decks with limited space. Almost all pendulum decks for example have extremely limited deckspace due to their inherent nature of needing scales. That's their weakness and because of that they can barely even afford to run triple ash, imperm, veiler, etc.
If they did manage to fit those in they auto lose to mine however if they sided for mine they auto lose to the min engine. Like I said it ain't building the deck wrong it's just that some decks can't be built with an out to everything. Also it ain't your fault for running it. It's Konami's fault for even designing such a badly made card. Yu-Gi-Oh is about winning so you use the cards that are legal to win. No one's blaming you for that as degenerate as the playstyle is.
You can't expect someone to have an answer to every card in the game that's being super unrealistic. If a solemn is wasted on an MST that's one out gone. The mine player can run far more outs to backrow removal than a monster based deck can run backrow removal for mine.
Why do you assume only combo decks lose to mine? It's any deck that needs monsters to get going that loses to mine. Also the current meta is literally midrange/control with like 1-2 combo decks and last I checked mine currently isn't legal. Backrow removal is also used against decks like rescue Ace and Labrynth which are once again the current meta decks. We don't need broken floodgates for that. Just by there being a top tier trap deck in the meta people have actually been running backrow removal.

The only way Mine can come back is if Konami goes back to the old field spell rule where players can only have one field spell on the field. Or they unban Imperial order to 3 along with Mine.
Imperial Order free so Mystic Mine isn't a problem is like giving everyone nuclear weapons so guns aren't an issue

The worst instance of mystic mine imo wasnt this but its use in pure monster combo decks like Drytron: In game 2 or 3 youd be forced to side in stuff like Droll, Dark ruler, kaijus, etc. to avoid being ftkd by drytrons 6 negate board, but then theyd go 2nd randomly, activate mystic mine and all your side board was useless. You could then side in a duster but by the time you hit it they just did full combo under mine and otkd you.

I have said in the past how much I despise that card and they told me that they would never play it and when I was literally about to swing in with lethal damage, what did they do, activate this bullshit and I sat there for almost 35 minutes!
And when they finally committed a monster, I just impermed it would’ve absolutely rocked their world if I got a turn, but they scooped.
I was livid to say the least.
