I think some like Big Mutha Truckers were ported to DS with the same models and gameplay, so the only improvements on the DS were lighting and shadows.
Yeah pretty interesting game, seems like the devs mission was just to port it to a whole bunch of weird platforms until finally finding success on mobile. It's also on WarpOS and GP2X, whatever those are
Really interesting indeed, first time I hear about it, as soon as I saw the footage here GTA Chinatown Wars came to mind. Quick search reveals that they also released a sequel(available on iOS and Android also).
Payback was actually an Amiga game originally. It required at least a moderately upgraded system though and scaled all the way up to ppc based systems with 3d accelerated graphics.
Huh, I did a little more digging and found an old forum post from 2005 which says that "DSI was unable to publish it [in the US] due to trouble with the age rating". Not sure how reliable that info is, but it might make sense and explain why the ESRB had a published rating.
I just want to let you know I love you very much. Your videos are everything I’ve wanted to see for a while now and didn’t know how to search it. I love seeing low tech systems do the absolute most in their power with graphics.
When I was younger I was always deeply impressed by Duke Nukem Advance, Need for Speed Underground 2 and especially Mazes of Fate, like, it was a fucking 3D first person RPG/Dungeon Crawler on the GBA! Insane. You should check it out. PS: Really enjoy the 4 parts of this, keep it up!
My pleasure, m8. Also, it was made by a pretty unknown team in Argentina I believe and was released in 2006, when the DS had already been out for over two years, definitely a hidden gem.
I was so glad to see Drome Racers. Immediately what I thought of when I saw the title. It was one of my favorite games as a kid. I also had NFS Most Wanted on the GBA which I believe was 3D as well.
Wow, I didn't know Smashing Drive was ported to the GBA, let alone a port that look this impressive! This port wasn't even released during the very end of the GBA's life cycle. Most games which saw a home console release and got ported to the GBA are a different beast when compared to their home console counterparts, Smashing Drive for the GBA is literally a port of the home console versions or in this case, a very faithful port of the original arcade release.
You did a GREAT Christmas gift to me minimme !!! Grazie! (thanks in italian) Thank you so much ! Great video ! P.S. You have intention to make a video about the Raylight Games company ? GOOD IDEA !!!
Biggest problem with payback is that you die in one hit. If you had more health, the fact that you can't tell what is going on 1/4 of the time wouldn't matter so much. Course, it is still the best GBA game for messing around IMO, GTA Advance may run better, but it is boring as all get out!
Not sure if you were aware (or if anyone will ever see this) but Payback was eventually ported to mobile (or at least iOS) and it also has a sequel there. Runs and looks MUCH better on those than on the GBA though.
Unrelated to the video, but I've finally decided to give give Max Payne 2 a go on PC thanks to all the things you've had to say about the series. Saw it at a shop for $5, figured I couldn't go wrong.
Yeah I think those two games go together very well. Like Max's arc starts and finishes over those two games. But, 2 is probably still a great time without it, and there's no harm in playing 1 later!
Payback was also ported to the GP2X Wiz, which I happen to own, although that's a comparably much more advanced console so it's not nearly as impressive that it ran on it. There were I think two Ecks vs Sever games that were doom clones on the GBA. I also wonder if there was a Duke Nukem port of some kind on it, but I can't quite remember. A bunch of Need For Speed games on GBA were in 3D too, but I don't remember any of them being any good. The Crazy Taxi port was also garbage, but maybe worth looking at from a pure technical standpoint.
Just googled that GP2X thing - looks right up my alley, that alley being weird gaming tech shit I'd love to play with. Do you like yours? There was a Duke Nukem Advance, I've yet to play it but I hear good things. I don't think it's a direct port of Duke 3D, rather it's own thing. Not completely sure though. And yeah Crazy Taxi on GBA is truly dreadful haha. Thanks for the comment :)
I haven't touched my GP2X in ages but I liked it for what it was and what it accomplished at the time it had just come out. Better things have come along since then though, namely Android portable consoles which offer better performance, better battery life, and most importantly better compatibility for emulators due to Android being far more supported than the GP2X ever was... The GP2X had a clunky D-Pad and buttons, that's its main fault for me, but it had a gorgeous OLED screen for the time. SNES games like DKC2 looked absolutely fantastic on it.
Oh yeah forgot that Payback was for the original GP2X, not its succesor the Wiz, however you could play it on the Wiz using a special software as I recall. I also played Cave Story for the first time on Wiz, it was the regular GP2X version and this had also marked the first time it was ported to a portable console if memory serves right.
Interesting stuff, you just sent me off on a long google tangent into the world of linux/android handheld devices. Pretty cool finding out about the original 'GP' thing; the GP32. Released way back in 2001 for South Korea only, seems they had some forward-thinking ideas for the time, like an online game store. I'd like to track one of these things down someday for myself.
I only ever saw Game Park systems in specialised magazines at the time. The GP32 was the first they made and it was a lot more powerful than the GBA too at the time despite coming out around the same time. However few commercial games were made and it was exclusive to South Korea as you pointed out, where it didn't really catch on either. I don't even know if Game Park are still in business. The last they made was the GP2X Canoo I think, and that had a control stick instead of a D-Pad which made the vast majority of their games, which are mostly 2D, a chore to play. They had cool concepts indeed, but there usually was some kind of drawback to their systems. The Wiz for example was nice, but it used a vertical (portrait) screen that had its display flipped to landscape physically, but the adressing of the pixels was left to the GPU to flip, so there was always a weird tearing diagonal line across most games and emulators (later on that was sorta fixed to be nearly unnoticeable but still, the problem wouldn't have been there without that hardware quirk). The last thing quite like it I ever got was a JXD S5800, which acted as an android smartphone in addition to a portable console, but the thing broke on me, so I stopped caring about Chinese or little known systems by obscure manufacturers that are hard to get repaired cause you have to send them halfway across the globe to a bunch of unknowns to get it repaired :P. But that makes for some interesting talk at least.
More suggestions: Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever and its sequel, great FPSs with very good graphics for the time. I remember when I first saw these running on the system, it blew my 16 year old mind to see the GBA running FPS games...
I remember playing Need For Speed on GBA. Each game has diffrent gameplay. I think most wanted is the best. and also duke nukem was ported to gba, but has diffrent levels than original pc game. Also provides multiplayer, but Im not sure.
V-Rally 3 GBA:"V-Rally 3 captures the essence of rally racing games with both it's visual and gameplay". Moto Racer Advance GBA:"It plays well. It has a high level of frame rate. A good variety of location and it even has 4 player multiplayer mode. Moto Racer Advance is a valiant GBA game". Dark Arena GBA: "With it's combined smoothness and intuitive control system. Dark Arena manages to be an exceptional FPS game for the GBA". Asterix and Obelix XXL: "The texture and environment is detailed, the character is animated, and it all run at a buttery smooth frame rate. Oh,and an added bonus, it play pretty good too". Killswitch GBA: "Killswitch stays within a playable frame rate, thus it sit at one of the most impressive GBA game to date". Driver 3 GBA:" Driver 3 is my pick for the most technically impressive game on the Game Boy Advance". Top Gear Rally GBA:"Featuring detailed outlook and urban environment, with even more detailed vehicle. Drifting and jumping though Top Gear Rallies track was a visual treat and an impressive introduction to one of my favorite consoles". Stuntman GBA: "The visuals are fantastic. It has a remarkable amount of different environment from cities, to snow, to countryside, and it plays pretty well too, despite it's very short length. Stuntman might just knock out Driver 3 out of the top spot for the most impressive 3D GBA game. It is that amazing". Doom 2: "On the GBA, Doom and the original Doom before it are surprisingly competent ways to play the iconic shooter on the go". Lego Drome Racer GBA: "The 18 polygonal tracks are all nicely detailed and designed and the sprite based vehicles and objects blend into the levels smoothly. Surprisingly, it's also excited to play. Races don't drag on too long and it offers up a good challenge. I now wish I own the game." Payback GBA: "Payback's visual effects, 3D physics and fully polygonal world makes it an incredible feat for the Game Boy Advance." Driver 2 Advance GBA: "It's still a remarkable achievement from much earlier on from in the Game Boy Advance life cycle." Smashing Drive GBA:"An arcade racer, which features some of the most densely detailed and interactive 3D environments, I have ever seen on the GBA. Each of the short levels are filled with destructibles objects and vehicles, as well as many hidden shortcuts." Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge GBA:"It's a decent little game with some interesting ideas and various mode, like multiplayer, but it's technical achievement are definitely the best thing about it." Super Monkey Ball Jr. GBA: "Super Monkey Ball Jr. is a outstanding game and just about as good as a GBA translation of a game in this series it could be." Tony Hawk Downhill Jam GBA: "It's a surprisingly little decent game from the Tony Hawk series that looks great." James Bond 007 Nightfire:"Featuring a good variety of 3D levels and weapons with some decent effects and verticality. Nightfire on the GBA is a valiant technical effort for the system." ATV Thunder Ridge Rider GBA:"ATV Ridge Rider is absolutely outstanding. Rather than using polygon to build it's world, this game opts to use a voxel-base engine akin to Outcast on the PC." Star X GBA: This game is great, the textureless polygonal model are relatively complex and the screen is more often then not, crowded with them. There are frame rate dips, but usually it's very smooth and playable." (So you did admit, the game is fun and impressive) And Lastly, SRS, though instead of recreating words exactly, I decided to twist it in the game's favour. minimme in this world:" It's a dreadful video game." My response: Wait, WHAT!?! *minimme in an alternate dimension* Street Racing Syndicate GBA:"SRS is another Raylight Studios game that uses the BlueRoses Engine. It's an admirable attempt to recreate the console and PC to a small handheld. But in that process though, the frame rate and car physics has been compromised. Like Smashing Drive, the game also lag choppy sometimes where I crash in the wall unintentionally. Technically though, the game has full 3D polygonal car model, varied background with texture mapping, the amount of customization and enough tracks with multiplayer to keep going. Ultimately, it's a shame that the frame rate does limit the fun factor, but it's impressive that the game tried to run on such underpowered hardware and tried something different, even if the potential didn't work out in the end." My response:"Oh, so I guess that makes sense, though I think the frame rate and car physics are minor problems." I'll be blunt this time. Seeing how the gaming industry is improving along well, I would see someone feel distant of what the system limitations are , but I would never have understood that it's technically would be a bigger problem than it's gameplay. Besides, the Wii, despite it's weaker hardware and an unbelievably amount of shovelware games, has done just as many impressive motion control on the Wii remote. You don't need a bigger chip, CPU and others to run the game. If developers understand what the console was built for, those games would be creative, yet technical marvel at the same time. This can be said for the GBA. Update#3: I again respect where you going at with your videos. You don't have to make a sub-title, as this was a optional ideas, so I was asking for a specific title. Again, this is not mandatory from me. You make the title that suit you fine, and I'll watch the video as any other video on RUclips. Regarding the entire idea, that I don't see you appreciating the 3D GBA games. It was simple: This was another response to the second last paragraph in your last comment where you claimed that consoles have done better used of 3D in their games and that the GBA failed it's potential. I did complied the quotes of the 20 GBA games and listed as "Graphically impressive" or "Fun and impressive". Besides, you already the GBA was much more capable. I do understand that the series covers games that pushed the GBA games to it's very limits and your fascination with these titles. Here's the funny thought: There are games that are considered poor, but get the respective praise after it's release. The secret is to embrace the flaws and play the game that be the most playable. Then play the main campaign and once I adapt to the sensitivity of that factor. It doesn't wear me out as I thought it would have been. I do agree that the comprises of frame rate from the graphics can hurt the playability of the game. Though, this can be passed over if the lag does not break the pace of game's performance. The replayability and gameplay are just as important as the technicality behind the system. Now SRS. I did mention both positives and negatives. I wasn't oblivious from what the game needed to improve to make your experience better. Nor did I glossed over the problems that and call it the "Best game of all time". I know the frame rate can be troublesome and infuriating and the car physics can be very sensitive to my controls. I did not have a flawless experience. There were times where I crash into a wall on a sharp turn, reverse, and crash again in the wall (I did regain my position afterward). The frame rate can be odd at jumping at 40 fps to 15 fps, though I wasn't as bother, since I was way ahead of race by over a minute, so I could make up my mistakes and carry on with finishing the races. There was also positives: Gameplay modes do break the monotony, graphically looks nice with texture and recreation of cars, music fits within the atmosphere and I can perform cool drifts to earn additional cash to purchase other items, like boost. I also want to mention that my opinion isn't that ridiculous and far off from your assessment of the game. To make this simple, I summarize this in short pharses: The game has both pros and cons, my response are justified and unbiased (again, I do see criticism as a beneficial way to see the reflection of the system limitations). Saying that Star X was fun and the games are N64 and PS1 quality are just sarcastic remarks, though I should have been clearer. I know that the game wasn't that fun from your view and the technology of the GBA isn't up to par with the PS1 and N64 in terms of hardware. Lastly, my reason aren't there to fuel any dissensions augruements. I do not always maintained my assertion that I'm correct, confident or even smart. I do read my statements afterward to see if my reason are justifiable, yet fair and consise. I acknowledge your ways of playing video games and assessing in a tolerated manner. I was flustered at first l, about why Star X is said as,"The game without the charm". However, I did put my biasness aside and started to analyze the game itself, before putting the comments themselves. I was actually more astonished by the amount of sentences, I wrote then being consise. Sure, SRS can be another "silly" game that we didn't need to talk about and I'm still cool with the game itself. Though I still couldn't help, but think this could have been resolved easily, had the criticism wasn't as vague in the video and focus on only on the frame rate from my view. Update#4: Well, I noticed that this contretemps conversation had to endure both frivolous moments and we failed to settle our difference and continue our assertion are better. I realise that my comments do have unintended hint of flippant, even though I tried to make cuts and reduce poor used of jokes, as well as languages uses. I even tried to take your suggestions to see if the game was really that bad. Yet, I always feel discouraged, when I actually wanted make a clear point of how the assessment of SRS would be difficult to be called"Impressive", and how maybe there was this dishonest feel that this feel like a first impression/ review than an honest opinion of a game that tried to be ambitious. There is still one question that I asked: What do you think,*truly* is the most impressive about SRS?
Maaaate, I'm too lazy to even subtitle my videos and I have the script. The GBA has pulled off many impressive feats. I made this video series because of my fascination with how far the GBA was pushed. Between this comment and particularly your 'update 2' of the other comment, I have no idea where you got the idea that I think 3D GBA games are unimpressive or always bad. Just look at the titles of these videos. You proved it yourself with all these quotes that I think there are many good 3D GBA games. Obviously though, pushing a console too far can have hindrances on the gameplay - usually with framerate issues. SRS on the GBA is a bland, poor video game. It has bad car handling, a bad framerate and doesn't do anything else to make up for it's problems. What an out of this world opinion. Also I never called Star X fun. And I don't call any of them N64 or PS1 quality. To bring it back a notch, as much as I appreciate the passion and effort, I'm surprised this is such a point of contention. It's just a silly street racing game, and it's cool that you enjoy it.
Yeah I think I see where you're coming from now. That's fair enough. I didn't mean to be vague, but I realise that being flippant had that side effect for you. I'll always be honest with my opinions, and I hope to be concise and entertaining too. Thanks for the comments, and happy new year!
In Street Racing Syndicate's Story Mode you can actually modify cars with vinyls and bodykits... it's stunning. But it is a crap game, you can definitely tell the CPU gets constipated while you're trying to play the game. I managed to get 75% on the game (and almost finished it) and then I realized that the game was made in such a way that you need to start a new save file (and delete your old one) in order to get 100%
Lego racers & dark arena could easily also run on snes with the super fx 2 chip. Cindygate racing on gba foes have some amezing visuals but at the cost of high frame rates. Back then i liked those 3D games for it ,but looking at it now it really feels more like being outdated and early 90’s, such as on 3DO or CD32 etc,,,
@@raelfert5268 underground and underground 2 have better controls and are better games than carbon, but not in graphics. Also, in My opinion, the best 3d racing game for GBA is V-Rally 3.
You should do a best fighting games for gba and if you do check out super street fighter 2 turbo revival its a fun game includes most of the character's and even making akuma and shin akuma unlockable through getting enough points in the arcade mode also add tekken advance ill let you do the research for that
Payback ATV Ridge Riders and SRS don't really deserve the negative attention. I fear this kind of vague criticism feel more biased, especially portables. This isn't from your opinion, besides, you might actually change your mind about the game itself.
Update#5: Well... specifically other than car models. I wanted you to write in brackets about another positive. At the very least, you can think of another positive of the car. I'm not asking much else. Again, take everything with granted, you don't always need to respond. If your happy with your comments, then that's fine, though it wouldn't hurt to ask all of them, right? Update#6: I also feel that car models is only a positive factor in the graphics. My comments are always taken seriously. You should also read my comment more thoroughly, as I was reasonable. Update#7: I am also concern about how you do not realise that my information is much more intuitive then 90% of the comment section. This was something I wanted to add in the last comment. Update#8: Oh, these 3 updates are parts of the other 4 updates that I was supposed to add in. I decided to put this in it's own comment from the limitations.
Wait,Dreadful? SRS is very passable. I'm pretty sure is the emulation. Or the game footage being slow to convert to RUclips. Besides, the game has a pretty good soundtrack and graphically look like an early DS game. Plus there is a first person view, so this might make the game drive better. Or maybe that accepting 3D GBA games is impossible. So you are saying that the GBA library is a laughing stock to make fun of, as "True" 3D cannot exist on portables. Update: I'm not upset nor angry, and I understand where your points come from. Nowadays, there have been many poor business practicing, like DLC and micro-transaction, and overhyped games could lead to unfulfilled promises. There is also concern about piracy, illegal digital distribution and AAA titles receiving lower sales then the previous incarnation. I mention this, since putting a game on a console or handheld in general with high expectations risk financial losses. With that being said however, I am still baffled by your assessment of SRS. There are 5 points I noticed: Good track level, Good car polygon model/selection screen, bad car handling (even though there is an customization for the car) and bad frame rate (which is strange, since Payback had the same issue, yet doesn't affect your ability to play the game). Theses points somwhat contradict each other, such as when you mentioned the car selection screen as the only good part of the game, when the track and high polygon car was also mentioned as go. While it's true that the frame rate is choppy is some part of the game, but I noticed that the game run better in first person mode. To prove the legitimatecy of my claim, I played the game on my emulator to see if your assessment hold water. During those 2-3 hours, I played over 10 stages of this game, including some of the challenges. Now, I was open-minded and funded both cons and pros. Here are my own thoughts of the game: 1. The weird car handling was brothersome at first, as I kept losing traction, but with enough preseverence, I got second place on my first race. 2. The frame rate, while not the best for this system, run better than expected and no glitching or crashing malfunction were present in the game. When the game chug, it wasn't as noticeable as you said in the video. 3. The level design has variety, such as going though a slope of a highway, making sharp turn and the different amount of background to keep me interested. 4. The game does get tedious after the second hour mark, so I look for any different modes (multiplayer was unavailable). Let me be clear first, I do not despise or favor anyone's opinions. I prefer criticism, as every ambition that every games would have a flaw. I do rejoice seeing this kind of video once in a while and I also like how each video is short and consise, while giving lurking games some new life of recognition. I would also add that 3D games have come a long way, since Super Mario 64 and Star Fox, to name a few. Technology is always advancing to the new era, so there are games that will push the system to it's limit. There are games that will be trash by being 3D (Cough*Bubsy 3D*Cough),but I see it as industry that can provide new and innovative. Without pre 3D games, like Tempest, Battlezone and I Robot (all from Atari) of the arcades, then many genre that would be present either be delayed or wouldn't exist. Update#2: I appreciate your response as always. I have taken this as consideration, though I want to comment that I added on. Saying the only positive was the polygonal car model, then the track from the frame rate makes little sense. I'm sorry to say this, however, just because the internet can pull out a random game in 3D and shoving back into obscurity by saying that," It wasn't meant to be on a system" as powerful as the consoles. I'm not in the mood to debate the potential of 3D in handheld and maybe I am becoming a little too heated at the moment, but this was on my mind, when watching the video again. The movement of cars in Payback wasn't the only factor that the processor that it really had to control from the movement of cars. Actually, my point was that the frame rate lag came from the processor was doing a lot of technical work on making your protagonist move, the 3D effect on explosions, blood splatter and making the building have details on the buildings sway back as you are moving from bitmapping the game engine. The Depth of a car moving over a bridge and shadow reflected on the car, sound effects, music and weather effects of the background were also taken in consideration as well. You also forgot to mention the intro FMV to get the player hype in the game. The other game that has similar issues is also mentioned the other game: Smashing Drive. I am going to do a controlled variable comparison, as both games has Raylight Studios involved in the process, both games was released in their respective years and uses the Blueroses Engine: Smashing Drive places emphasis on powerups to reach a certain finish line, with checkpoints occasionally to supply with more time. SRS required player skills and timing to get though tight corners, as well as achieving the best time score possible. Both games suffer from frame rate issues, but are playable, though SRS has looser controls, making it hard though the first few races. The soundtrack was lifted and reformatted for the GBA hardware, while SRS has cut the voice over, but has the catchy music from the PS2. The point of making this comparison is that the studio aim to push the system to it's limit, so that even with the flaws, there can be some enjoyment of these games. I also do want to add to my listed points: 1. While I did say that the play control was a lot different to maneuver around the tracks, I also learn to adapt it's sensitivity and turns. Since I used Automatic to drive my car, maybe Manual might be better. Sure, I still slam into the wall by accident and occasionally missed sharp turns, which I presumed to be a nightmare by your views of the game. Yes, the boosting works as an advantage to catch up to the lead AI, so I don't see how that factor was wasted. 2. Okay, Great. We established that the game has no bugs/ crashes. What do you disagree on? The AI, while being sometimes delulded to the player's presence, wasn't nearly as bad, after I learn about the terrain and the amount of speed needed. The draw distance is much more smooth and texture don't randomly pop out. Plus, there is the occasional car damage and different lighting effects of shadow, which makes each stages feel ubiquitous. 3. What I said is a simple intention of 3D racer that was already experimented with noticable games like, Hard Drivin and Stunt Race FX. As the racing genre continue to have the same principles upon with games like Daytona USA, Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer. These games are simple to describe, addictive and engaging. You don't need to change the formula that was previously established two decade ago to be competent. SRS acts like a racing sim with an arcade-like feel that I cannot stop. Now, the level design on SRS might feel rudimentary to your perspective. To me, there was some compromises to alleviate the problem, where there is a greater freedom to move on the sidewalk to recover the time losses. There were times where I fell behind the opponent, only to catch up on a largely empty road. The first person mode I mentioned, was supposed to help give a sense of speed and to help give visibility. I presume the frame rate made the game much more accentuated. It's not a new feature, but I guess that you are not a fan of anything in first person mode in any racing games, aside from first person shooter. However, to call the playability "So bad" sound more of a simple figure of speech. When calling a game "Bad", I expect a lackluster presentation at the start, then poor game execution and lack of replayability. Every game obviously has it's fault. However when the game allow me to do what I should do for that genre, the flaws can be glossed over. SRS fits in the latter. Yes the frame rate can be a hassle, the play control can be hard at first (an attempt at semi realistic/arcadic physics) and the gameplay can be tedious after playing for a while. I know I am making a bigger deal than anyone else, but if I can't stop the amount of unwarranted hate a game can be amassed, then the game will probably end up forgetting, even if that is good for some peoples. There are however, some odd choice wording that did bewildered the meaning of the sentence. This signifies a generalizing view of the game, meaning that the public domain is acquainted with the game's existence, then finding out the game from your perspective. What was your main concern of the game? It seems like the frame rate, car physics or gameplay plague your ability to enjoy the game, while on the other hand, the video take a brief look at the ability of technical feats of the GBA. This strikes me more as a discrepancy, as I am sure that you want to abate the capabilities of the GBA. Really? You think the games in 3D on GBA are only filled with unimpressive polygons and it fails to the consoles for being ambitious? That's questionable. It's true that many GBA games hasn't age the best in mid-2010's and that there are games on consoles would obviously surpass these titles, but to call the GBA a failure is uncalled for. I'm not angry nor upset, but I need to clear with misconception of 3D on portables in general. I am also not forgetting that other conversation before, as I tried to approach criticism without a conservative mindset and willing to accept people on how they play games and entertainment in general. This isn't a rant, though I do go off my cases in some parts. In short, even if you do still firmly stand on your view of SRS, I am reasonable to explain the positive and negative.
Reviews at the time say it runs at sub 10 fps, which is accurate to my emulation. I think SRS is dreadful as a game, as are a lot of other 3D games which tend to over reach. I see that you've left a lot of comments disagreeing with me and being upset at these videos, and that's fine. We're just going to have to agree to disagree I think.
I'm going to just show my side of things here. I praised both the tracks and the cars, but focused on the cars because the tracks run at such a poor framerate. Payback is a top down game which is much slower paced, though it has similar problems in fast cars. I did say that I didn't like it as a game, but it does a lot more technically than SRS so I praised it more for that. I don't like first person mode, and felt it accentuated the poor handling. As for your numbered points: 1. I didn't say the game was hard, the boosting helps a lot for doing well in races, it just feels awful to play. 2. There's not much glitching and no crashing sure, but otherwise I disagree. 3. Sure, but the base gameplay is so bad that it doesn't matter. 3D games on more capable systems are often much better, just the GBA is punching above it's weight and often fails. Regardless, I'm not stopping you from enjoying the game. This is just my perspective. Thanks for the comment :)
You really shout stick an episode # in the video title so it's not an actual guessing game when you're looking at related videos and can't read the description.
It's weird how some of these look almost like ds games
I think some like Big Mutha Truckers were ported to DS with the same models and gameplay, so the only improvements on the DS were lighting and shadows.
I just love it when you say those sexy flat shaded polygons
hahahah can I make this comment my next profile banner
minimme YES!
Kodai Boy he did it lol
I had no idea payback came out on the GB..I thought it was just an iOS clone of GTA. really cool shit
Tea So it was called payback.... Played this to death on my machintosh computer back in 2005)?
Yeah Payback 2 is very fun with friends on mobile.
GP2X is a Linux handheld from 2005. It was advertised in independent UK game magazines of the time, but it only saw official release in South Korea.
love these videos keep it up
Hello kmak.
I had Lego Drome Racers as a kid. It, along with Super Monkey Ball Jr., were (and still are) two of my favorite games on the systen.
Dark Arena looks more like a Marathon clone than a Doom Clone
And I’m here for it
Payback was actually an Amiga game originally. It required at least a moderately upgraded system though and scaled all the way up to ppc based systems with 3d accelerated graphics.
Did Payback ever get a US release? Wikipedia lists its release as "worldwide", but I can't seem to find any evidence of a US cartridge...
I think so, it has an ESRB rating of M, and there's one box art image with the rating on it on Google. Not entirely sure, though
Huh, I did a little more digging and found an old forum post from 2005 which says that "DSI was unable to publish it [in the US] due to trouble with the age rating". Not sure how reliable that info is, but it might make sense and explain why the ESRB had a published rating.
Eh no reason not to believe that, interesting stuff
Ayyyy both of my favorite youtubers
check out sonic battle and fifa 2007
technically interesting for the gba
I just want to let you know I love you very much. Your videos are everything I’ve wanted to see for a while now and didn’t know how to search it. I love seeing low tech systems do the absolute most in their power with graphics.
i didn't expect another part, nice :)
Man Mazes of Fate looks like a really good game, why haven't I heard of this! Thanks for showing me haha
Thanks, I'll make another soon :)
My pleasure, m8. Also, it was made by a pretty unknown team in Argentina I believe and was released in 2006, when the DS had already been out for over two years, definitely a hidden gem.
Underground was the one...
I used to play Smashing Drive all the time with my best friend. I still have the cartridge and I play it every once in a while, it's so nostalgic.
I miss the GBA. It's crazy how I had one since launch and still have yet to play 5% of the library.
Payback looks really awesome and fun.
The intro fro smashing drive is one of the most beautiful things ive seen on the console
I've played Playback 2 a TON on my phone. I had no idea the original was on GBA, that's absolutely crazy.
I was so glad to see Drome Racers. Immediately what I thought of when I saw the title. It was one of my favorite games as a kid. I also had NFS Most Wanted on the GBA which I believe was 3D as well.
Reminds me of the snes mode 7 “3D” and the ps1 true 3D, this is what I imagine the Nintendo PlayStation disk system for the snes would look like
Payback looks a little like Chinatown Wars, with the tilted top-down view that follows the player's directional facing.
5:17 HOW DOES IT SOUND THAT GOOD?
Wow, I didn't know Smashing Drive was ported to the GBA, let alone a port that look this impressive! This port wasn't even released during the very end of the GBA's life cycle.
Most games which saw a home console release and got ported to the GBA are a different beast when compared to their home console counterparts, Smashing Drive for the GBA is literally a port of the home console versions or in this case, a very faithful port of the original arcade release.
Loved dark arena on gba! And vrally!
Great vid. if youre still gonna make these kind of video. try playing "Asterix And Obelix XXL" .
You did a GREAT Christmas gift to me minimme !!! Grazie! (thanks in italian)
Thank you so much !
Great video !
P.S. You have intention to make a video about the Raylight Games company ? GOOD IDEA !!!
Grazie! I'm thinking of making a video about either Raylight itself or cool tech demos on the GBA
Have a nice christmas!
minimme
It would be amazing! (^_^)
Same to you, and Happy New Year!
Hi!
Mini game u can relive your childhood using iemulators
😊
🙏
holy shit you were going almost 400 MPH in that racing game
You sort of sound like Danger Dolan. (Sorry if that's a bad thing)
But he hardly does his own content anymore..
Good to see you do. ;)
I'm told this super often, not sure if it's a bad thing though haha
Thanks man glad you're watching :)
Biggest problem with payback is that you die in one hit. If you had more health, the fact that you can't tell what is going on 1/4 of the time wouldn't matter so much. Course, it is still the best GBA game for messing around IMO, GTA Advance may run better, but it is boring as all get out!
Heyyy I actually like GTA Advance more haha
Smashing Drive looks so much like Twisted Metal 2, aesthetics-wise; makes me wish there was a Twisted Metal game on the GBA.
I think you should include Need For Speed: Carbon. Hands down the best graphics, physics, music, and sound FX out of any GBA Racer I've played.
Not sure if you were aware (or if anyone will ever see this) but Payback was eventually ported to mobile (or at least iOS) and it also has a sequel there. Runs and looks MUCH better on those than on the GBA though.
payback 2 is pretty much a remastered version of payback 1
now I know what payback 2 on iPhone and Android is a sequel to.
The PS2 version of SRS was super fun. Not surprised it didn't translate well, though.
Unrelated to the video, but I've finally decided to give give Max Payne 2 a go on PC thanks to all the things you've had to say about the series. Saw it at a shop for $5, figured I couldn't go wrong.
Mate go for it, hope you enjoy it. Have you played the first?
Pretty awesome that you bought something based on my little recommendation!
minimme I haven't, would you recommend playing it first?
Yeah I think those two games go together very well. Like Max's arc starts and finishes over those two games.
But, 2 is probably still a great time without it, and there's no harm in playing 1 later!
The drag racing in lego drome racers is pretty fun :)
I LOVE Smashing Drive, it's so much fun and so over-the-top! Payback is pretty good too, but I'm not a big fan of the genre...
Smashing drive is the love child of Crazy Taxi and Twisted Metal. I wished we got a remake.
I hear about this game all the time but I've yet to actually play it. I should get around to it soon, thanks!
Star wars - flight of the falcon. though the fps can't keep up with many other games you showed us, I believe its worth mentioning.
Mhmm SD and Payback.
My fav 3d gba games
Great Multiplayer too !
Check out Banjo Kazooie - Grunty's Revenge. I don't recall how good the game was, but I remember it being visually fantastic.
I played that game sooo much as a kid, would be interesting to return to it
How do I not own dark arena! imo it looks better than original doom the old ebay watch list grows haha
rombits Just download a GBA emulator on your phone and get the rom for it. Won't cost you a cent.
Need For Speed Porche Unleashed, it has a slightly low resolution, but the framerate is good, and the car models are amazing
I'm pretty sure this is the final part but have a look at Cars Mater-National Championship. It has some pretty impressive graphics for a Disney game.
I remember playing Need For Speed on GBA. Each game has diffrent gameplay. I think most wanted is the best.
and also duke nukem was ported to gba, but has diffrent levels than original pc game. Also provides multiplayer, but Im not sure.
Am I the only one who expected Deja Vu to play at 1:52?
1:03 Dark Arena of Time?
You have forgot about Duke Nukem Advance. One of the best 3D game for this handheld. ;)
I'll check it out!
You should include Grand Tourismo for GBA next time!
probably you may include colin mccre rally and ecks vs sever on your next list ;)
Let's hope that next video will be honest, consise and accurate to the title of Impressive.
I now wish I own the game."
Payback GBA: "Payback's visual effects, 3D physics and fully polygonal world makes it an incredible feat for the Game Boy Advance."
Driver 2 Advance GBA: "It's still a remarkable achievement from much earlier on from in the Game Boy Advance life cycle."
Smashing Drive GBA:"An arcade racer, which features some of the most densely detailed and interactive 3D environments, I have ever seen on the GBA. Each of the short levels are filled with destructibles objects and vehicles, as well as many hidden shortcuts."
Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge GBA:"It's a decent little game with some interesting ideas and various mode, like multiplayer, but it's technical achievement are definitely the best thing about it."
Super Monkey Ball Jr. GBA: "Super Monkey Ball Jr. is a outstanding game and just about as good as a GBA translation of a game in this series it could be."
Tony Hawk Downhill Jam GBA: "It's a surprisingly little decent game from the Tony Hawk series that looks great."
James Bond 007 Nightfire:"Featuring a good variety of 3D levels and weapons with some decent effects and verticality. Nightfire on the GBA is a valiant technical effort for the system."
ATV Thunder Ridge Rider GBA:"ATV Ridge Rider is absolutely outstanding. Rather than using polygon to build it's world, this game opts to use a voxel-base engine akin to Outcast on the PC."
Star X GBA: This game is great, the textureless polygonal model are relatively complex and the screen is more often then not, crowded with them. There are frame rate dips, but usually it's very smooth and playable." (So you did admit, the game is fun and impressive)
And Lastly, SRS, though instead of recreating words exactly, I decided to twist it in the game's favour.
minimme in this world:" It's a dreadful video game."
My response: Wait, WHAT!?!
*minimme in an alternate dimension*
Street Racing Syndicate GBA:"SRS is another Raylight Studios game that uses the BlueRoses Engine. Ultimately, it's a shame that the frame rate does limit the fun factor, but it's impressive that the game tried to run on such underpowered hardware and tried something different, even if the potential didn't work out in the end."
My response:"Oh, so I guess that makes sense, though I think the frame rate and car physics are minor problems."
I'll be blunt this time.
It's car models, I'm happy with my comments in the video regarding the game.
There's a sequel to Payback on IOS and Android, called Payback 2
payback 2 is on Android as well :D
THAT'S AN AWESOME GAME VRO
make another one of these please I keep watching these videos in order
I want a sixth one
part five please
Duke Nukem Advance is the best 3D/fps for GBA
In Street Racing Syndicate's Story Mode you can actually modify cars with vinyls and bodykits... it's stunning.
But it is a crap game, you can definitely tell the CPU gets constipated while you're trying to play the game. I managed to get 75% on the game (and almost finished it) and then I realized that the game was made in such a way that you need to start a new save file (and delete your old one) in order to get 100%
Lego racers & dark arena could easily also run on snes with the super fx 2 chip.
Cindygate racing on gba foes have some amezing visuals but at the cost of high frame rates.
Back then i liked those 3D games for it ,but looking at it now it really feels more like being outdated and early 90’s, such as on 3DO or CD32 etc,,,
What About Herbie Fully Loaded???
Whats the name of the song in the background?
Ha, if you liked Payback 1 you should try payback 2! its on IOS and Android. Its a huge enchancement
Payback is on electronics now too
MORE GAMEBOYZ MORE GAMEBOYZ MORE GAMEBOYZ
Payback also has a sorta remake on mobile
it's a remake and a sequel at the same time
Please do a top fps gba games or do more of these
Working on another video right now, but I will definitely do that soon!
I'm here 2 years later. Anyone else?
need for speed carbon was a 3d game for gba with amazing graphic effects
Nfs underground have same graphics with better gameplay
@@raelfert5268 not same graphics, NFS carbon has better graphics and they're incredible for a GBA: shadows, lights, etc.
@@piticusomancuso953 hmmm i didn't knew. I never really gave attention to carbon since underground is way better (my opinion)
@@raelfert5268 underground and underground 2 have better controls and are better games than carbon, but not in graphics. Also, in My opinion, the best 3d racing game for GBA is V-Rally 3.
You should do a best fighting games for gba and if you do check out super street fighter 2 turbo revival its a fun game includes most of the character's and even making akuma and shin akuma unlockable through getting enough points in the arcade mode also add tekken advance ill let you do the research for that
Warning: playing 3D games on the GBA will drain it's battery quicker depending on the framerate
all parts of video is nice! I'm brazilian xD. +1 sub
Was the payback game on iOS related to the gba one?
yes, there's also a remake of payback called payback 2
I'm a bit confused as to what else you'd like to know regarding my opinions, but I appreciate the comments
I love SRS... No joke
You should take a look at Payback 2!! It’s like a pick up and play Gta 5
4:35 basically pc master race nitpicking, don't mind it, its usal and most of the time worthless at the end of the day
Urban Yeti
Serious Sam advance
Spyhunter
Sonic Battle
Iridion I & II
Thanks for the suggestions
Urban Yeti looks so weird
Oooh that’s why there’s only a payback2 on the AppStore. Cool.
What if they put the Nintendo switch U
my ass sittin over here thinking sonic battles 3d stages were impressive, all the while not knowing the extent of 3d games on the GBA
mah, i liked your videos, but i'am not speak english, So you could talk about the 3d games of the Nintendo DS?
Obrigado!
Apex insulted GTA but I would love to see a 3d or HD payback
How about gta advance?
Wait no Duke Nukem :O
Might need to *COUGH* totally buy legit copies of these games *COUGH*
Star X. Pretty much Star Fox :)
As for your numbered points:
