I really liked this! It is great to see what painstaking work goes into making Williamsburg such a special place!

So interesting! I would love to see a layout of both churches after you have finished the dig. Also of note, nobody in Williamsburg appears to either wear a mask or understand that you should wear it over your nose.

Interesting. I am a structural engineer from Pinehurst NC. I have done a lot of renovations over the last 25 years of older structures. I would think the methods and materials would be similar. In the mid 1800's the foundation would have been a reverse corbel brick foundation. The foundation brick would be laid perpendicular to the wall brick and would be 3 to 4 brick wide and stepped in until the wall thickness about 3 or 4 inches per step. Just a guess, of course, based on the one photo of the building. I'll be up there at the end of the month, hopefully I can get a peak.
The flat pavers look more like just a patio or walkway. Bricks back then had a bit more sand in them than bricks today. Earlier foundations probably would have been stone foundations or brick and stone is my guess.
