just a heads up for anyone looking to do this, I have a golf mk7 2013 model and they use the old heater matrix like the ones in the Passat and mk6 golfs. I’d recommend removing the glovebox (RHD cars) and finding the part number on the heater matrix before ordering your part. This job is an absolute nightmare but once it’s done you’ll be glad you did it lol having heating in my car again seems like a luxury.
Good tutorial helped a lot. Just wanna specify that on left hand drive cars like I’m guessing most cars here are, you won’t need to remove the dash etc. Remove the trip pieces on the left/drivers like underneath along with one vent and you have good access to the water core. Changed it today, takes no more then 4 hours with coolant flush!
Thanks for sharing, I had trouble finding the last screw (behind the CD changer) which holds the glove box assembly in place until I saw your video. Mine is Passat B8.
Total nightmare of job.. did this last week trying to get the clamps to grip properly on the matrix was awful got there in the end.make sure you flush the old coolant out the engine before fitting the new matrix..My back has been aching all week
Some heater matrixes are different to this one - depends if you have Valeo or Denso. The Denso ones have pipes attached to the matrix and they join in a different position.
You don't need to disconnect the air bag, I had to get mine reset after disconnecting it, if your doing it in one day just pull the panel free then remove the glove box. the panel can be pushed back in place with out the glove box attached.
Anyone doing this job if your losing coolent out of expansion bottle and and heaters only get hot on 1 side It's matrix mine was flowing freely once removed and both pipes were getting hot so I thought it's not matrix that's at fault still fitted updated matrix unit with larger holes its like a oven in there now took 2 hours today with help from this video thanks again
I was losing coolant every other week and only had heat out of passenger side and cold drivers side. I thought the silica bag had split. Lucky for me I still had warranty. It actually turned out that the heater matrix was leaking into the car.

2 different types Denso and Valeo. VW could not tell me which one is fitted. If you remove the first few bits of trim, it exposes the side of the heater matrix and mine had Denso stamped on the pipes. Not actually done the job yet.
The metal pipes going into the centre console are leaking on mine. Is there an easy way to get them to stop dripping? I have tried tightening but no luck. Is there meant to be a seal?
Hi there is an o ring on them. There is 2 types of core i have the other linked in the Description and pinned in the comments. When you say tightened you must have the core with the pipes
@@murphyslaw2020I get hit sir sometimes for about 30 mins then goes cold I also am losing coolant about 600ml every month. Could heater matrix be cause of this coolant loss?
Have look in the Description I have some videos on the pumps. The water pump leak a small bit on them I'd look into it. I've done 20 + water pumps / timing belt kits for them leaking
What do you think about me trouble: when set hi, driver side blows hot air, passenger side blows cold air, all passenger holes. Flaps for hot and cold air works when seting temperature, sensors works too. Where is problem?
I had a problem on a different brand car were the flap had broken inside the housing it was only letting cold air on one side. The motor for the flap was still operating.
Blocked matrix can cause different temps on each side - usually the passenger (left) side is the cold one. I have just taken one apart that had no heat from left vents and even though thr matrix doesn't seem too bad, it is blocked enough to keep part of it cold.
Very useful - wish I had found this sooner. Quick question. All the heating / ac is working fine in my 2015 mk7 golf but there is an awful smell coming though the vents from as soon as the car is started - a burning / electrical type smell. Any ideas, no smell at all under the bonnet. Very much in the car can. Pollen filter has been removed and the smells the same. Cannot pinpoint the cause. Thank in advance for any ideas.
The fan motor does have a bit of a smell however this doesn’t seem to be the issue and it smells after replacing. There is clear burning on the earth connected to the electric element (heater booster?) in front of the internal rad which had the same smell as what’s coming through the aircon. So I believe this may need replacing?
The pre heather maybe be you problem disconnected / remove it and try run the car to see its smell goes . You probably need to block the hole with tape etc
You can see most of the pipe work from top / bottom of the engine bay. There is 1 or 2 electric water pumps so keep that in mind you may have to run the pumps
Hi it's very hard to say without looking at the car. Look to see if there is any signs of leaking coolant it can be red / pink . Check the water pump is not leaking this was a common problem on the older TDI golfs etc If the coolant is low the heating may not work at all If you continue to drive the car with low coolant levels /leaks it may do damage to the engine itself
@@murphyslaw2020 Thanks, just worried as I'm un able to drain the coolant first and as the denso pipes point upwards im hoping I'll only lose coolant from the core itself, I'll maybe clamp the hoses at the bulk head too, the denso pipes just look like they might be harder to get off

Hello, when I start my golf 7 2.0 tdi, the windshield and the side windows fog up when I turn on the air conditioner, after 10 15 seconds it gets better, could it be from this radiator?
Hi I'd try a new cabin pollen filter first. Put the heating on the hottest setting and the AC off , let the engine temperature get hot you might have to drive the car. If the it's not hot it could be blocked it can be just warm might mean it's just starting to block
Thanks for the quick response. My filter is new, the car blows warm, it's just that the windows fog up when I start the car and when the air conditioner works, I'm fine as shit, a slight fogging appears again. Is there another radiator that sits behind the dashboard, I don't know where it's leaking my system and fogging up my windows :(
Great video! Would this be the same process for a 2013 Seat Leon FR TDI 150? I’ve been putting off changing mine for a couple of years now because I thought I had to take the entire dash out.
How did you flush the system? I'm doing a 1.6 TDi at the minute. Took the hoses off the radiator, expansion tank, and the heater matrix at the bulkhead expected to see more coolant out of the system. Am I missing something? 🤦🏻♂️
You need to run the electric water pumps on some models you can run them from the diagnostics or maybe remove the hoses at them to help get the coolant out. Hope that helps
Hi yes they can give problems with the core getting blocked. I haven't had many of the newer engines give trouble yet in the workshop but the older 1.6 TDI give some expensive problems to fix egr comes to mind
@@murphyslaw2020 yeah it seems to get blocked because of a silica bag bursting in the coolant expansion tank. i think that's the main reason for the heater core failure. so it's well worth taking the bag out, just in case. @@murphyslaw2020 Any tips on how to plug the pipes going back into the heater core securely? My seals around the o-rings arent working even with the clamprings on tight causing leaks - tnx & cheers
Hi Id just used some grease on the o-rings to make sure they seat properly not sure if that will work for you. Last thing id do is try some sealer around the o rings this is not the best but could work
@@murphyslaw2020 Ok job done - I slightly lubricated the o-rings with coolant (note only silicone grease lubricant should be used in case anyone else is thinking of adding grease) and inserted the rings in the groove then pushed the coolant pipe into it until they made a tight fit. My mistake was that i had the rings on the shaft-end of the coolant pipe and not the other way around. Also I noticed that the new o-rings were slightly less thicker than the originals so I I didn't use them just to be sure.. i used a bit of teflon on the lower pipe but dont think it was necessary - tnx mate.
I'm not sure why people aren't bothering to flush these out because I just stuck a hose directly in one that's completely blocked and cleared it straight away! 🙉
I'm not sure there like a profile fitting. Are you thinking of back flushing the rad. We tried it on a different car it wasn't very Successful but it could work for you if that's what you're thinking
Na looking to replace the whole thing but having a look online some radiators have different size inlet and outlets. It’s either 16mm or 21mm so just a bit confused on that
Hi Someone commented that there is two different brands of radiator this was a oem from VW so didn't have to worry about it. Have a look in the comments it's been mentioned once or twice . If you had a good parts supplier that could take returns easy you could get both and return the one you don't use. That's What we do if there is multiple options but are suppliers are very good at no cost returns
Hi, nice detailed video! I am planning to replace the heater core on my mk7, but mine is a left hand drive. Should i also remove the heater core from the left side? (Steering wheel side) or should i do it from the right side?
Hi I'm not sure. But if I had to guess I'd say the heater core is on the same side vw try to use the same parts in most of there cars. Pull the bottom cover off and look for the coolant pipes. Good luck
@@murphyslaw2020 Hi, yes I did. Got the matrix out this afternoon, was blocked. reverse flushed with mains water - much clearer. Hopefully will be nice and warm in time for cold weather. Not a bad job really.

Hey there man , maybe you could give an advice here , got a 2014 seat Leon Fr 184ps Cupa engine, recently lost heat and coolant cap burst , no hot air coming in to the car , touched the heater matrix pipes both cold , after squishing radiator pipe good few times heating is back to working but primarily on one of the side of the car … Went to local garage they haven’t found any leaks of coolant , rang them back again after the visit happened again , they now presume it is the head gasket. Any ideas , could that possibly be heater matrix?…
Hi I'd do a head test its really quick you use a liquid that changes colour and it tell you if you have exhaust fumes in the coolant system. You may have air getting into the coolant system water pump leaking maybe. Id also plug in and see if there is any codes there can be 2 extra water pumps that are electronic I have seen them fail
Have done head gasket test myself , showed no signs whatsoever, had launch plugged in to the car , no fault codes , no I’m not loosing coolant on standing , driving only when expansion cap bursts loosing around 300ml of coolant from expansion tank … Strange things , got the car back to the lad that changed water pump and timing belt , waiting for reply.

Hi I don't think this car has a coolant heater control valve. (I'm not 100%) but I think the hot and cold air is mixed with flaps that open and close inside the heater box ran off motors that keep the temperature you have set ie 21* etc . some Toyota's (and other makes ) have valves on the intake coolant pipe to the heater core and close off the coolant to the core to stop it getting warm.
Great job you got sorted
I'm not sure why people aren't bothering to flush these out because I just stuck a hose directly in one that's completely blocked and cleared it straight away! 🙉
I flushed this car 3 or 4 times, it didn't work. it is like scale inside the rad. I even flushed it with the rad out still no joy
If you know what could be causing my glasses to fog up, please tell me, I will be very grateful. If anyone has had such a problem please share???
Did you drain the water out first? As there would be water through the radiator? I need to do this on my mk7 gtd
Yes drain and flush the engine coolant first
Do you lose any information when removing the sat nav? Do you need a code ect
No just unplug it. You don't have to do anything after its plug and play hope that helps
Hi mate what mm was the inlet and outlet for the radiator?
I'm not sure there like a profile fitting.
Are you thinking of back flushing the rad.
We tried it on a different car it wasn't very
Successful but it could work for you if that's what you're thinking
Na looking to replace the whole thing but having a look online some radiators have different size inlet and outlets. It’s either 16mm or 21mm so just a bit confused on that
Hi
Someone commented that there is two different brands of radiator this was a oem from VW so didn't have to worry about it.
Good luck
So step1 - remove heater core. Did I miss the first half of the video?
Hi did you watch the video in full ? There is an overview of the job at the start of the video
@@murphyslaw2020 Hi, yes I did. Got the matrix out this afternoon, was blocked. reverse flushed with mains water - much clearer. Unfortunately I made a mistake trying to get the pipes off and thought the flange was the bit that comes off with the pipe. Ended up damaging it so the pipe won't seal anymore. New matrix on order! Hopefully will be nice and warm in time for cold weather. Not a bad job really.
Nice video mate 👍👍👍
Anything that I could look at fixing before trying this ?
Just make the car is getting up to temperature and it's not a cooling system fault
@@murphyslaw2020 how much would you charge me to replace this? Presume you are in Dublin ?
Hi
sorry I'm not taking in outside work at the moment, I'm just too busy.
I'm sure a local garage could help you out
@@murphyslaw2020 Hello again, how many hours would you say that took you?
Hi I can't remember but it's was a good few hours. More time if you flush the coolant etc
Is it the same for a vw caddy van?
Very similar
Nice Video. All those electricals your removing / reconnecting. Did you disconnect the battery first or no need to bother? Many Thanks.
Yes disconnecting the battery would be good procedure. You may get fault codes if the plugs were undone and the ignition key was turned on. I have a diagnostic computer so wasn't a big problem for me. Hope that helps
hi there murphy i had a new heater matrix instaled in my mk7 and not even a year later the right hand vent near the window is blowing cold air and the rest are blowing hot air any thoughts on that
It has to do with the motor or the flaps inside the heater box . If your getting hot air on one side the matrix is more than likely ok
@@murphyslaw2020 do you have a video of the flaps
I think the flaps are working fine the motor definitely is because I can feel the cold air coming thre even at high speed with a we bit of warmth in it
@@murphyslaw2020 is it only dule heater controls that has the 2 flap motors on passenger and driver
I can see the one on the passenger side works
Hi all the models have the flaps. Just the Duel control ones have flaps for left and right
Is the heat from the working side getting really hot when the car is at full temp
Hi, haven’t watched the video but need to replace mine at some point, how long did it take you altogether?
You would do it in an hour or so. But I would recommend cleaning out the coolant system so that could add more time. Hopefully that helps
Heya Lad. Old video i know, but i've recently lost heat from the heater randomly after 30mins of driving. kept driving about 1.5hours later heard a suck/gurgling noise behind the dash-still no heat. not coolant loss etc, Turned vehicle off and had heat for around 10mins and faded out. This happened several times. both lines going to the heater core are hot??? no fault codes, does not overheat and sits bang on 90. heater blend motor appears to be moving and functioning as normal when opperated. vehicle is 2018 skoda ocatvia vrs 2.0tdi. waterpump has been replaced. could this be one of the auxillary heaters? or the matrix starting to fail? any help would be appreciated
Hi if it's the heather rad the pipes still could be hot. The one in the video were hot to handle but the core was fully blocked.

The 2nd pump helps with the heater rad
I now have exactly the same issue. Wondering if / how you solved this
If you can get it plugged into a Diagnostics scanner might show up something with the pumps
Hey there man , maybe you could give an advice here , got a 2014 seat Leon Fr 184ps Cupa engine, recently lost heat and coolant cap burst , no hot air coming in to the car , touched the heater matrix pipes both cold , after squishing radiator pipe good few times heating is back to working but primarily on one of the side of the car …
Went to local garage they haven’t found any leaks of coolant , rang them back again after the visit happened again , they now presume it is the head gasket.
We have also seen the egr cooler leak and the coolant burn off in the engine.
Are you losing coolant
Have done head gasket test myself , showed no signs whatsoever, had launch plugged in to the car , no fault codes , no I’m not loosing coolant on standing , driving only when expansion cap bursts loosing around 300ml of coolant from expansion tank … Strange things , got the car back to the lad that changed water pump and timing belt , waiting for reply.
I had a A3 do something like this and is was letting in air to the coolant system very very small leak was a nightmare to find. Let use know how you get on
@@murphyslaw2020 I’ve got the same problems with my golf no heaters and it keeps losing coolant. I can’t find where is leaking from anywhere. Any ideas??
Where is the heater control valve located?
Hi I don't think this car has a coolant heater control valve. (I'm not 100%) but I think the hot and cold air is mixed with flaps that open and close inside the heater box ran off motors that keep the temperature you have set ie 21* etc .
some Toyota's (and other makes ) have valves on the intake coolant pipe to the heater core and close off the coolant to the core to stop it getting warm.
Just to point out the vw has extra electric water pumps that helps with heating / cooling the system
Hope that helps
There is no valve, the matrix gets full coolant flow at all times
Awesome video 👍
Hope it helped
@@murphyslaw2020 I was looking at removing the dash so it helped me understand more parts of what is going on behind there and also that if the heater core does fail (touch wood) it can be replaced without dash>out
What brand was the heater matrix that you bought?
It was a OEM VW part.
Murphys Law I called vw and they said they had two different brands? Do u know the exact brand?
Sorry I don't know there was only one option for me. They should be able to pick it from your registration / vin number. If not you may have to remove the one you have to match it or maybe look into aftermarket that may be able tell you what brand will work. Hope that helps
@@murphyslaw2020 yeah cheers mate, VW told me i have to remove it first to find out, was just trying to see if i could find out beforehand. great video pal
Hope you get sorted 👍
How much did this cost you?
I don't recall but it was an OEM VW part. Iv seen them online from 60 euro up
Hey man im having the same problem of my car not blowing hot air i checked both the lines for the heater core and they are both hot im confused on what it can be
Hi there is flaps that regulate the air flow on motors. If you get the car good and hot the pipes should be very hot . Hard to hold
Murphys Law so maybe the blower motor ??
Murphys Law cause i get cold AC fine its just hot AC that doesnt work
If the the AC is working good the blower motor is fine. Just make sure the heater rad is get red hot
Murphys Law how long would that take i mean i can leave the heater for like 20 minutes and the car can be up to temp and it would still blow out cold air.
Hi , what where the simptoms ? Cheers
Hi the car had no hot air coming from the vent's . It might get a little warmer if the car was parked and fully hot.
@@murphyslaw2020 this is exactly what’s happening my 2013 golf but I’m useless mechanically, would you know how much this should cost to get fixed in ireland?
Don't bring it to VW. I'd say a few hours labour, 3 or so even less if they have done one before. Plus coolant /flush and the rad its self. I'd call your local parts shop and vw price the heater rad. If have any questions just ask
@@murphyslaw2020 perfect I’ll check it out! Based in Dublin here atm so should have plenty of options, cheers for getting back to me so quick
I'm not to far from you if you get stuck let me know
Nightmare job, I think I will just a new car!
Pua gash
worst and dumbest design ever
was a lil bumpy yesterday cause things werent working my way at all loll. I dont actually think its the worst design because a lot of car manufacturers use this design but i miss the good ol 1/2 piping and rubber hoses with retaining clips.
Great video by the way.
