Mike: Why don't you use a phosphoric acid wash to prevent further rust on the steel parts. I kills rust by making it inert, changing the chemical properties. Put it on, metal turns black, put the primer on and end of problems. I goes where paint can not owing to viscosity. It burrows into every crack and pore in the affected material. Paint can not do that. I certainly hope that the work you are doing results on operational equipment. Engine might be impressive by their sheer size, but the do not teach anyone anything. People look, "Wow, that's impressive." and walk away with absolutely no concept of how those machines work. Only an operating engine can tell the real story. You have quite a project going. I hope you have a LOT of volunteers or paid workers, just as Salsburg does. Where is your location?

Thank you for the update Mike.
Glad the locomotives and equipment are getting the attention they need.
I'm enjoying your video's as they show what and how you and the other personnel are accomplishing the work

The L1, thank the Lord you guys are touching it! Since she's the last of her class this news, makes me have so much respect for you guys. It's one of my favorites to see when I visit and man do I want to see her with a fresh coat of paint. I am curious though if the K4 will be getting some love? I've asked in a few videos so I do hope you have an answer. Since 3750 has quite the history I'd love to see her also with a fresh coat of paint. Regardless I wish you luck and please keep us informed!

IIRC, the L1 was used as a basis for the USRA 2-8-2 heavy. Good design, good pullers.
A lot of work, but worth it.

Thank you for the update and all the hard work on #1670. Thank goodness that these locomotives were protected so many years ago, starting at Northumberland. God bless and stay safe to all staff, especially including yourself and Allan.

You make a great point with wanting to protect the locomotives if they’re in or out of the round house nine times out of 10 the Roundhouse is not going to be insulated, and though the weather changes aren’t dramatic up here in the East Coast, it does get hot and cold, and that can cause rusting on even the best metal my dad kept all his guns locked in his gun safe, and our garage and surface rust was starting to accumulate on the barrels

I'm so happy to see 520 get some love, I remember seeing it around 2011 and I had a moment where I looked up and saw the oily rainbow stuck on the tender. I felt so sad for it. Thank you for documenting the process of these giants finally getting some love.

It's good to see that this work is finally being done; it is several decades overdue. These former PRR engines have been sitting outside for so long that they look as if they are being scrapped. They should have been kept under canvas, to protect them.

Probably not honestly I keep mistaking this locomotive for 1361. What do you think about it they look kind of similar but it would be cool to see a doubleheader between the two

As much as the steam locos deserve the attention, what about 4800? There's only one Rivets and it's tragic to watch such an important loco return to the earth like that.

Im loving the documentation on the processes being done, keep up the good work 👍
Also please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought area for the cab signals was the box on the running board, I thought the area mentioned at 4:35 was for the Trainphone system.

Good question I'll have to look into that.

    • @mikesmetalfab
      @mikesmetalfab  6 месяцев назад +1

You are correct. I asked someone today and that was for Trainphone. I wrongly assumed that it was cab signals because it didn't have the antenna system up top. Apparently, that was removed before the locomotive was retired. We are in the process of getting the information on this tender because I have more questions than answers.

Ashpans Blowdown Valves and Grate supports were the most common areas that rusted out under Locomotives,
as they sat waiting for some fool to come and make them live again.

At the 0:13 second timestamp two birds land on quite literally nothing. Definitely a glitch in the simulation. In the top left corner of the screen.
