I'm an archaeology student in the US, and at least here in the states, Jared Diamond is very highly criticized for Guns, Germs, and Steel for being ignorant of the archaeological record and making such broad claims that they end up being less than useful and innacurate. In laymen discussions, I've also heard it used as justification for imperialism, but I think those people are missing the point. Anyways, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on this as someone who is more advanced in the subject than I am. should he be read with a grain of salt? Do you also recommend reading responses to that book as well? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!
Hi Katie, yes definitely! I would always read responses to books but definitely for this one. If you cite him in work too then that criticism you've written is also brilliant to include but try and find a source that you can cite.
I am 22 (I know kind of a late start at life) trying to find what I want my life career to be so far I have found interest in Vet Tech, Archeology, Palentology, and Marine Biology, very hard to choose lol
What a great list! I have to say, I have an MA in Anth/Arch and I have not read a single one of those books! Maybe it's just that the focus is different here in the U.S? I have read PLENTY of other books, just not these. I will have to look for some of them.

I got my BA in Anthropology in 1990. I'm planning to go back to get a graduate degree in a few years when I retire. I've been trying to stay up to date, but haven't read books (following articles, reviews and podcasts mostly). What would you recommend for someone like me. I noticed all of these books were published after I left school. BTW Don Johanson got his BA at my Alma mater, University of Illinois
Jared Diamond isn't an archaeologist or anthropologist. Books on environmental archaeology would be much helpful than his books for a beginner. Also, I think 'A History of Archaeological Thought' by Bruce Trigger and 'Contemporary Archaeology in Theory' (Ian Hodder) would be better for a grasp of archaeological theory. Archaeology: The Key Concepts by Renfrew and Bahn for fundamental concepts in the subject.
It's the concepts within Jared Diamond's books that will help with understanding. He is a geographer and anthropologist & the two subjects go hand in hand; looking at how the subjects fuse is a great starting point. I agree with Bruce Trigger as an addition, yes! I also read his books during my degree at Oxford.

If you're into physics maybe have a look in radiography archaeology and also GIS and landscape survey. All these books are to get you familiar with the subject but the ones suggested in response to Tilley's phenomenology of the landscape may interest you.

If the person writing the book or text is qualified to do so then so be it idk what it is with college professors and students complaining about the lack of women and “people of color” in certain areas of work and study. Maybe they just aren’t interested in these subjects! Also archeology and anthropology aren’t super popular subjects so that answers your question why there aren’t more women or “people of color”
No, it doesn't. Both disciplines were founded on colonialism, racism, and social evolutionism. Consequently, both disciplines have always had an us vs them kind of undertone, which cannot be deconstructed without diversification of the subjects and listening to the voices and experiences of people from different backgrounds. Furthermore, every individual has different experiences and these lived experiences are very dependent on where we come from, who we come from, and what we look like. How can we properly understand artefacts, cultures and ancient people if we are only looking through the eyes (aka experiences) of white men?
Can you make more videos on your field of study? I follow you in hopes you put out more educational videos or videos about books more than your "day in the life" type stuff. Please don't take this as me being rude, I am just post school and I love anthropology.
Heeey I will when I have any free time. At the moment vlogs are all I can really do with the time I've got and they are what makes me happy and least stressed. After Christmas I have considerably less 9-5 teaching and less assignments so I'll be trying to do some teachingy ones then. Plus, i didnt want to make any educational forensic anth vids until I'd had enough of the teaching- this is new for me too! Thanks for your comment 💜

I think anyone should write on any subject aslong they have the evidence and research to back it up. Why should the authors own background make so much difference? The facts should be the facts right?
I think it really does make a difference. Authors choose to focus on and research what they deem to be important and this varies greatly by class, gender, sexuality, race etc... Particularly in the past, white male versions of history have been presented as the only 'truth' because that is how the west has viewed history- truth. These versions of history made it to the top and have remained there until fairly recently when their monopoly began to be questioned. This is why university reading lists are still predominantly these books but that is changing. I did a whole topic on 'history and memory' lol so I do enjoy talking about it. You're right though, facts should be facts but it mostly doesn't play out like that in archaeology from experience because no one truly knows what went on in the ancient world.
