I remember the feeling after I first watched UTSL. I thought "wow, what a mess!" The next day I found myself thinking about some of the scenes and laughing. So I watched it again. Now it's one of my favourite films.
Great video. I recently did a series about this movie because I’m obsessed with it and I’m glad to see others are too. I’m excited to see where your channel goes from here 👏🏻
I recently watched this and was amused and baffled. However it left me thinking about it for days after the fact. I didn’t know how I felt about the movie at first but I have come to love it.
What sells Silver Lake for me is the slacker protagonist. This fits in a tiny sub genre which I've enjoyed called stoner neo-noir. Part of that is the excellent The Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice which is good. Silver Lake continues in that style of the bumbler backing into becoming a crime investigator. There’s a lot more about the movie but I’ll leave it there.
I love this movie, even though the ending might not be what you will expect, Sam does learn an important lesson and he’s awaken to see his life from a new perspective.
I think the "smell" that Sam has is because he is poor. The nurse in his bathroom says she will come back when the smell is gone. Sounds like she'll be back when he has money.
The Women in the movie are like Dogs to him, The ex had a dog, and moved on to new fame. Maybe he sees this as she (a dog in his mind), becoming more successful, as a dog taking his success away or just blaming her..... rather than blaming himself in any way.

Came here to say nearly the same thing even purchased on Amazon because I was tired of chasing it from paramount + and MAX

Loved your series
Not sure how any analysis of this film can ignore Sam's ex-girlfriend.
I absolutely love Under the Silver lake. Definitely my favorite film of the decade.
Love this movie. Sam is definitely a killer.
Sam is the ultimate unreliable narrator

Stoner neo noir tell me more
@@mrstation6905 ; have you watched The Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice?

Reaching with this one
I think it is just his true "Character" coming out, that is the smell.
Drunk as a skunk?

What actually happens to Sarah's Dog at the end? Did it get killed in the car crash or is it with her? Also the comics he reads seem to manifest.
Sam killed her dog.
I live in LA and every time I meet someone new I ask if they’ve seen this movie. The answer is always no.
One can imagine the hipster LA version of Twin Peaks, complete with the underground bunkers, similar to the Black Lodge.
The main clues I found are Hitchcock, Lynch, and De Palma.
Dont leave Polanski's Chinatown out, dyyyamnnit
@@markvito746 Of course. Missed it, I guess, because the tone is so different.
