@PatsGarageOnline I just found your page after purchasing a 2017 NSX, also in Curva Red. Great content!! Very much appreciated. I've subscribed and passed along to a few other owners. Thank you.
Thanks for video. I purchased my 2017 NSX used as a private sale from a wealthy Ferrari collector. It had 550 miles when I purchased. Interesting he had the NSX branded CTEK charger kit installed at his Acura dealer at the time of purchase (as well as every other possible dealer installed accessories). Ironically it appeared that he never used the NSX branded CTEK as his NSX sat in his collector car garage, virtually unused, for almost 3 years. I think he used another, inferior brand of trickle charger instead of the CTEK because in one photo the seller provided me, the car can be seen in his garage with the charger wire coming out of the front hood, instead of the passenger side door where the CTEK plug is located. When the NSX was delivered to me in enclosed transport, the 12v battery was stone dead and would not take a charge. It literally vented sulfuric acid fumes when I attempted to charge it. We theorized that this 12v battery was over stressed because he didn’t use his CTEK.
Hi Pat. I'm new to your channel since you got the NSX, which is what got me to subscribe. My son worked on the NSX development in Ohio and I've been thinking about getting an NSX for several months. Thanks for taking the plunge and posting about it. I hope you will continue to post as you learn about the car and maintain it. I'll be interested to see if you tackle and oil change. I saw a video of a dealer doing it, there are seven drain plugs, plus the oil filter is not easy to reach. I live close to Pohanka in Virginia, maybe I'll see you at a local cars & coffee.
Nice to meet you! I'll definitely be doing an oil change in the future and posting it. I live in N. MD but make it to Potomac cars and coffee from time to time. If your son is allowed to discuss anything about his work on the development of the car, I'd be interested in interviewing him on a Zoom conference call and post to my RUclips channel. Have him email patsgarageonline at gmail if he's interested. I'm curious in what work he did and what he thinks of the finished product.
@@PatsGarageOnline He is leery of having anything posted. He's not sure if Honda would object or not. I can tell you that the car was prototyped and engineered at the Honda development center near Columbus. I went there for an of open house during the NSX development; it is an amazing place. My son was part of the underbody department, working mainly on the front structure. It took a lot of effort on getting the aluminum components to fail in a predictable and consistent manner, i.e., getting them to bend and not break.
Good advice. My NSX is currently on a trickle charger. I just leave the quick disconnect handy under the hood and plug it in. Easy peasy. As you say, you need to start the car and charge up the lithium ion battery occasionally so it isn't damaged.
Thanks! Now, I'll have to leave a note card on the dash to remember to unplug it. With the i8, I've gotten in and started the car to be prompted to disconnect the charger. The NSX will not warn me, LOL.
Beautiful NSX!! I have 2019 in black and I chose to go with the factory charger. Installation was very easy and I prefer not having to open the hood to charge it, but I guess it's just a personal preference. Good Job!
Pat you are the NSX WARRIOR of the cyberspace! Thank you for such a detailed and educational video! My NSX came with the dealer battery charger May i use your method to charge the 12V battery
You should connect your charger negative connector before the battery sensor, not after. So the BMS is able to know that you charged the 12V battery. Just use the stud next to the sensor instead. Nice content by the way.
Thank you so much! A lot of the cheaper cars have been discussed on RUclips, so I don't put too much content up on the Volkswagen or Ford that we also have. The hours invested in production result in a handful of views, sadly.

@@karambir87 got a third party warranty for $5,000 all my oil changes are included spark plugs and so on with $100 deductible so I feel I'm good either a hundred thousand miles or 10 years. Hey Pat, came be way of HPO Justin, any video of potential maintenance costs yet? Currently have a 2018 Grand Sport Corvette and waiting on C8 but because of waiting line thinking about one of these .... it’s sweet 💪💯💯
Thanks for stopping by! I haven't done any maintenance on the vehicle yet, but I'm working on gathering information about that now. It looks like about 8 quarts of 0w40 engine oil and a filter is required every 10k, but I'll do it every 5k but there are 7 bolts that need to be removed to drain all the oil, and crush washers replaced. The DCT fluid also needs to be changed just like the C8. Brakes are carbon ceramic, so I'll likely sell the car to Justin before I need to replace them, LOL! Stay tuned for more...
Sadly, the only way to charge the high voltage battery is by running the engine in Sport + mode. It likely won't charge while the car is stopped. You may have to drive it.
Thanks! It cannot start in EV mode only, since it was programmed to start the engine. But, it can be driven lightly in EV mode and I hope to create a video on that.
In conclusion, the next day I bought a new AGM 12v battery from Advance Autoparts and the car started right up. In a related topic, have you considered converting your NSX to be a plug in hybrid, much like your i8. The concept would be to install a larger, removable Li-Ion extender battery in the trunk and build the high power electronics that would the use energy from the trunk mounted battery to charge up the OE battery behind the seats. This would also use an “outside of vehicle” charge module to charge the trunk mounted battery over night. I think a 6-8 kWh battery capacity would be sized appropriately and would allow the NSX to drive between 15-20 miles all electric in “Quiet” mode. This concept is similar to many of the Plug-In kids that were available for the Toyota Prius before 2011.
I purchased a CTEK charger since my NSX didn't have the optional dealer installed plug under the dash. I hard-wired it to the 12-volt battery and will be releasing a video on this procedure. I will not convert the car to be a plug-in hybrid because that goes way beyond what I want to do with this car. The requirement that the car be driven every 3 months in order to keep the high voltage battery charged is sufficient for me. I'm surprised that the NSX you purchased didn't have any hybrid battery issues. If it sits for longer than 3 months the potential is higher that the small hybrid battery will fail, according to Acura. But it sounds like you had a terrific find in a very special car in your garage.
Only thing I would have done differently is added a nut on each terminal instead of undoing them and running a longer spur (as I do on my motorbike) so it could be threaded to the front grill and D/sided taped there.
I considered that, or go with the emergency vehicle method of auto-disconnect on ignition. Knowing me, I'll pull the CTEK power out of the wall one day. 😄
Hay Pat i followed all the steps of this video and the charger works as we expected. However, as all of us could predicted the infotainment is totally black now. Should I take the car to the dealer? Or any other option?

Hey Pat, I am interesting on adding an underseat powered subwoofer to the back of the front passenger seat on my BMW i8. But I’m not sure on where to connect the powering wire and how to get through the firewall. Hope you can help me with some ideas!! Thanks
If you you need a lot of power, you'll need to get that from a thick gauge 12v line or the battery itself. I know of no holes with rubber plugs between the cabin either the front compartment with the 12v battery or the back compartment where the 12v line runs to provide power for the engine ignition. So, you'd have to experiment at your own risk on this one.
I have many experienced on installing subwoofer but never in hybrids car especially with my new i8. That would be a great idea to connect from the 12v line from the back compartment, might install the subwoofer in the trunk instead. Thanks Pat 😃 you’re awesome!!!
Hello Pat, I own the 2017 Acura NSX and my alarm keeps going off randomly at least twice per month. When the alarm goes off, the headlights turn on, the dash lights also turn on and it makes a strange clicking noise as if the car is attempting to start. This happens often and I brought it in to my Acura local dealership and they didn’t find any issues with it. I parked it in my garage and the same issues keeps happening. Any advice what the issue may be? Thanks
Wow, that's a new one for me. I know that the NSX electronics get weird when the 12v battery is weak. It will show that it's well with a volt meter but it's not. The car is sensitive. I would swap out the 12v battery if it was my car. I had to do this once because I kept getting tons of errors on the dash. I couldn't figure out why the traction control ABS was throwing errors. A new 12v battery fixed it.
Hi Pat, I also have the CTEK device. It is a very good device I had to change my i8 already 2 batteries within 4 years. I am of the opinion that the small 12 v battery is also charged when I charge the high-voltage battery. Why is the small only 2 years bad. I am considering the CTEK device to use here too.
I wouldn't install the SeaTac charger on the BMW i8 because you can actually cause more problems by doing that. sometimes batteries have bad cells. The i8 has a very small 12-volt battery so when it does have a problem it's very obvious. these things usually only last three to four years so two years is a good run.
My daily drive to work and back is a total of 3 miles totaling to 12 minutes, 5-6 days a week. Guess I don’t drive enough for the NSX. Lol. Maybe that Sunday drive would be a longer drive, odd they didn’t do some kind of plug-in on it so you can run electric only
If you drive in Sport Plus mode you'd definitely be keeping the high voltage battery charged. That thing charges up quickly because it's so small. I can make 2 laps around the Walmart parking lot feathering the pedal and then the high voltage battery is exhausted.
@@PatsGarageOnline wow that is crazy. You’d think with battery technology it’s have some more range then that. Like a 10 or 15 miles at highway speed at worst wow.
