  • Why I chose the Niner Air 9 2-star hardtail mountain bike.
After spending years on my full suspension mountain bike, I decided to take a step backwards and purchase a modern hardtail. In this video I will go over the reasons I chose the Niner Air 9 as my hardtail of choice.

This is my first NEW hardtail in years and I am having a blast on it. What modern hardtails have you all been happy with?

I have the 2023 Ibis DV9 and I am loving it, fast and nimble. I bought the frame and installed a mixture of Shimano components, DT XT1700 wheels.

Dope. Would you consider it an xc racer? Can you put 29" 2.5s ? Thanks man.

Nice review, thanks. At $399 for a frameset now, it's tempting as a second bike to add to my FS bike. My current HT is a Trek X Caliber, and it uses this weird QR 141 Boost rear hub spacing and a 100mm QR front axle, that you can never find good wheels for, and the Formula cone and loose ball hubs suck. I ride it for commutes and parkway workouts, but it would be nice to have a proper hardtail, with through-axels and a better fork on it. I'm between this Niner, or going with a Specialized 27.5" rig. 27.5" Parts are being blown out everywhere, and I kind of like the chubby tires, ha. You can get near $1200 forks for like $400-500 because nobody wants them now. Good wheels are being blown out too. I already have a 29" Pivot FS bike and a 29" HT so it might be cool to try something different.

I have a Giant Fathom 29er custom build. Bought the bike and stripped it down and sold all the OEM parts. Man, I love that hardtail for sure! I built it up rugged. Definitely not XC.

Ive had Orbea Alma for two years now and I love it. It has a decent about of flex in the frame that can be very forgiving. I am a big dude so I probably am not getting everything out of it but I have no regrets.

For weight reference, my LG came in a 28lbs on the build sheet. If I was to guess, it was 28.9lbs, lol. The wheels are heavy for sure. But it ships with tubes and the claimed weight of the 2.6 Nobby Nic with Super Trail is 1020g and the 2.4 980g. My 2.35 Rock Razer with Super Trail is 870g for comparison.

I ride Giant XTC SLR1, bought after watching your first impression video of that bike, and I must say I really like it. no experiences with full suspension, but XTC is really great climbing bike, which I really like. Crest works fine, but I'd rather have something from Fox or RS, just because it's easier to find guides and parts for self servicing. other than that, this bike is great. (lock out lever sucks tho :D )

I couldn't agree more! The only reason I went with the air 9 was because of the hefty discount and it was available. At full retail the XTC is definitely more bang for the buck

After owning 5 full suspension bikes, I went back to hardtail. I was just tired of the complexity, maintenance, and noise. The other thing I realized is that, at my age, I just don't enjoy the kind of technical riding that warrants full suspension, so I just don't do that kind of riding anymore.

    • @theakh4238

You can still get your azz handed to you on a hardtail. But I'm in the same boat. Give me some well groomed blue diamond with flow and I'll rip that as hard as I can and I'm good.

Bro how do you have the exact same taste in bikes as me? Your rave reviews of the Orbea Occam H30 were part of convincing me to buy one myself, and now you're reviewing this Niner Air 9 which I also bought a couple months ago

I'm not a fan of Specialized but I grabbed a Specialized Fuse 29 Comp 29 (red) and upgraded the handlebar/pedals/chainset) ..... its been a fantastic ride for me. Tbh I honestly would have expected you to go to for the Giant SLR :D, but then again I don't think I've seen a Niner Air 9 over here in the UK, it seems like a real nice bike (nice shade of blue too!).

    • @MossieRidesBikes

I was pretty close to buying the XTC. The updated geo on the niner and the 120mm fork pulled me away though. I'm not a huge fan of specialized as a company but the fuse is a solid bike!

I simply can't afford a full sus bike of any quality. Been riding a Vassago steel SS for years. I rode Pisgah and Brutal Loop 2 with a rigid fork on that bike. It can be done. Just bought this bike, and I can't wait to ride it. I will likely swap over my Stans Arch wheels, XT cranks, and XT hydraulics, though my rear brake is still an old school BB7 that has been flawless 😜.

Diamondback has this 29er hardtail that I just discovered and it's only being sold out of Canada only...
It's called the Diamondback Crimson, l would love to hear a review on your channel about it, that is if you're familiar with it by now...
It's probably been out longer than I discovered it... LOL

Interesting to hear 👍. Seems somewhat compliant. Did it stay the same after putting the whiskey wheels on? I have a newer Chisel, which is also a nice ride. Also since you have done FS as Single speed, do you have a recommendation of best FS platform to try SS on?

    • @MossieRidesBikes
      @MossieRidesBikes  Год назад +1

I didn't really notice a huge compliance difference with the stiffer wheels. They were substantially lighter though. As far as single speeding a full squish goes, I have only done it on a single pivot bike but the Shimano alfine works great. It's basically a derailleur that doesn't move laterally.

Rode a steel frame hardtail for years, but finally upgraded to this Air 9 after breaking a rear axle and realizing the upgrade path was weak for my old steed with old standards. The Air 9 actually feels more compliant overall while being much stiffer at the BB and headtube.

Any problems with the PF30 BB? I just ordered a frame, and since I've had a threaded BSA BB for my last 30+ bikes, I have some concerns about creaking with a BB shell that relies on friction to hold it in place.
