    Imma repeat. Do molten glass into liquid nitrogen. It would be cool to see if it just forms a prince ruperts drop or the pressures inside from cooling so fast, are so great that it explodes. Ya'know?

      Autistic Fingoloid You realize heat can travel through air, right? Almost all things that are put into liquid nitrogen trigger the leidenfrost effect, yet it still cools them rapidly.

    Ah his takes me back. I tried somethings very similar as a kid, only using a propane torch. The explosions were unexpected and more than enough to put me off. I can still remember the feeling of being peppered by hot shards.
    Not nice.

    I'm a bit curious to know the chemistry and physics behind this.
    My basic understanding is that the HHO puts energy into pyrite's bonds, causing them to break apart. In turn, the energy produced by breaking said bonds is enough to produce sufficient force to propel chucks of pyrite everywhere.

      +Crispin Freeman It´s half iron, and half sulphur, guess what, sulfur evaporates at 350° iron doesn´t even melt until 1800. All along the faultlines the sulphur builds up and then cracks it.

      Joshua Real Posibly, but if you look closely some of it does melt rather than explode. If you break it up and even heat it, it might melt instead of pop.

    Pyrite is hard, i work in the oil and gas industry and when we encounter pyrite it eats the tungsten carbide teeth off the drill bit in no time at all.

    A map gas torch will do the same, and easy/cheaper to get. But my question is why ruin such a nice example of pyrite? I know its worthless, but still it was a nice piece for display

    I wonder if it's water between the grains that makes it explode like that.
    Should have heated it in an oven at 110C for a few hours first. Then done the experiment.

    Try ferrocerium powder vs a big chunk of wood, ( Ferrocerium is a metal that can burn really hot, and is mostly used in fire starter rods, magnesium rods are also used :3 )

      +ChaoticWolf Ferrocerium doesn't burn particularly hot, it's used in fire starters because it's pyrophoric so it sparks exceptionally well.

      The hydrogen gas is burning but we don't know if the pyrite itself is burning. It doesn't seem to be smoking and it's definitely not on fire, so it's unclear what's happening.

      +Gonun It's HHO. That gurgling in the background is his electrolyzer, and IIRC he just runs the gasses straight to the torch.

      If you heat up pyrite it produces sulfur vapours, i suppose that it's the reason behind the violent reaction and the explosion of the Cristal.

    Fools gold, or Pyrite, isnt a metal but a crystal, so there are air pockets that blow up from the hot air and possible gas. And also because rocks dont melt (lava isnt melted rock, but molten, there is a difference)

      +dvanw6 -- But molten literary means "liquefied by heat". Molten comes from Melt. It's usually used for things with high melting points, but it's perfectly acceptable to say the butter on my toast is molten butter.

      +InDeepPudding When you heat something it expands. When you heat a crystaline structure quickly it tries to expand but the rigidity of the structure means it builds up internal pressure. When the internal pressure exceeds the strength of the material the stored energy is released.

    HHO gas is a good way to break up quartz rocks and melt the gold out of them. Makes it easier to crush the rock.

      it would most likely tUrn back into a powder or catch fire because the heat from the jickel ball would evaporate the water leaving the powder which could probably catch alight
