Hi Kristine, I kayak fish with my daughter (4 y o). We watch a lot of kayak fishing videos mainly Greg Blanchard and Alex Rudd. The other day she ask me why there is no women who kayak fish .... I said they are so she would like to watch women fishing. I will watch your videos with her now. Thanks for being an inspiration for young (and not so young) girls. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I thought that it was pretty rad when you first boarded your kayak. You walked from the shore, with a little hop from shore to kayak, with such ease and security. It shows how familiar that your are with your kayak. Pretty awesome there Kristine
Another GREAT video. Excellent content AS USUAL! I always learn something new, thank you. AND , on another note…..CONGRATS on the article in Outdoor Life! Yes, love this idea. Please more. Can you explain as you go through the day more... why using what you are, why going where you are, show more graph pics, but also how u pick where without graphs... and how u know when to change baits or locations. Thank you.
That's cool I think it's a good idea, I'm definitely interested to see how you approach these lakes. Always wanna learn more!! The locals told me same thing when we moved here last summer. That our little lake didn't have much in it besides bream. Well I've caught more 4&5poumders than I can count, also have caught 3 6+lbs a 7 & 8.98lb. it actually has ton big bass in it!
@@kristinefischer2289 yeap I figured I would find out for myself. Such an awesome channel, my son and I target bass pike and( musky when we can) was wondering if you have considered trying (musky) in the grass river in Northern New York.
I'm amazed by how easy you make this look. I bet the locals jaw will drop when they see your footage. Question what size weight did you throw at 16ft when you got the walleye?
Haha I wish that ski boat came back ! Everyone we talked to had little good to say about it- I really think there’s good fish there ! I was throwing a 1/4oz tungsten round ball here - my fav ones are linked in the description- they are hard to find sometimes!

Hey Kristine, I'm another "granny fisher" with a question: I put 3 rods in the yak when I go, a Penn spin cast, a Kast King baitcaster, and a light weight crappie/pan fish spinning. The Penn and the Kast King are all on med-heavy rods. Love the Penn but the baitcaster gives me fits. I've read tons of articles and watched loads of videos on setup and casting, but still end up with birds nests. After a few hours spent picking line I get disgusted and go back to the spinning reel. I know a baitcaster can be extremely efficient in most situations and would love to get over the "nesting". Do I need a better reel? Different line? I'm using 20lb 8 braid. Any help is appreciated!
Were you throwing a swimbait or a Texas rig couldn't tell...looked like you were throwing onto a point then too.....enliighten me please. Good raw fishing. Love it keep up the good work
That's cool you go fishing together, do you both run Garmins& LS, or does he run something else? I'm still on fence between ultra106 & lvs34 or Solix10 with mega 360, I could still add mega live later. Exspensive decision to make!!? Still undecided? Any advice on electronics? I fish from a PA12 360 so I have plenty of room. That was a really nice walleye! Those are good eating! I used to do alot walleye fishing up north before I moved down to SC.
Hey, Kristine, I'm old enough to be your granniemaw and I just stumbled onto your channel. I love it! I've never held a fishing pole in my life but, boy, howdie! You sure make me want to get out there and have fun. This is an amateur question but do you ever keep the fish you catch to eat them? Do you ever order fish in a restaurant or is that the last thing you want to eat after catching them all day? Just curious...love your videos! 🙂
Hey this made my day! I hope you get out on the water and give it a shot! I will sometimes keep them, but mostly I’m catch and release. I’ll keep a few smaller walleye or a few days ago, we kept two slot red fish to eat. I always let the bigger fish go! I do order fish from a restaurant :) walleye and perch are my freshwater favs. If I’m around the coast, i love seafood
As a fellow New Yorker I can tell you now they were not telling you there was no fishi at the lake or questioning your fishing abilities it’s probably a really good lake that they just did not want you to fish which is stupid but unfortunately that’s probably the truth For some reason vocal anglers freak out when they see cameras thinking that their lakes That their local honey holes are going to get exposed. I personally love the fish new water and break it down it’s just unfortunate that some people take the whole secret aspect of fishing way too serious
The locals tried to discourage them from going. They knew that lake had some good ones. There were a few segments where I'm sure I saw the locals in poorly made ghillie suits on the far bank-line! 🤣
Not sure how far north your are, but you better bring some water to the susky!!! She is very low. I was asked to run the camera crew around in my inboard jet and there are areas, right now, I cant even get in.
I often compared latitudes between Europe and north America. And often times, what Americans refer to as north. Is more southern in latitude, compared to here in Europe (British Isles and Scandinavia). It's also the reason why many of the bass anglers in Europe come from Spain or Italy no doubt.
When it comes to fishing in really northern places. It flips the switch like that. Either the fly rod catches zero. And the spinning rod mops up it all. Or the other way around. In terms of fishing with multiple people. It's the most useful thing. You have a real time sample of what works. What doesn't work (lots and lots of times, it helps to have someone fishing slow baits, someone fishing retrieved baits like wire spinners, and someone fishing static suspending lures like flies). For example, in this instance. Unless someone had fished a fly rod. Out of the three people (and three people all of whom had high levels of competency in fishing). One never would have concluded. That a more static, suspending style of presentation. Would have offered any advantage whatsoever. And I don't even know why in that instance. The fly rod even did as well as it did.
The broader brushstrokes on the canvas. Come down to things like waves (there weren't any white toppers, or swells). Which can make the fly rod work really well at times on lakes. The sky overhead was a significant factor. Which means that fly lures can do much better (transparent, thin materials that flies are made of act like panes of stained glass against the sky). And when there is limited light available can do very well. That could be a part of it. The water clarity. The water was much more 'see through' than your typical warmer, southern latitude water. You add a small bit of color to that water. And very quickly, the fly rod can become redundant. And it changes back to 'lateral line' kinds of lures. That will work. Also distance of cast can matter. The ten-foot approximately, soft action fly rod that the Texas man was casting. Is going to reach places with a small bait presentation. A long, long distance over horizontal trajectory. There is no doubt about it. You try to do the same thing with any other conventional tackle. Wacky rigs, drop shots or tubes. That anglers use in that part of the world. And the fly rod is going to out-cast and out-fish anything at times.
The other thing we don't know. Are things like the casting angle. When Guillermo is throwing a fly rod he is standing upright on the kayak platform. And the kayak may have been pointed frontside in the direction of the shoreline. Does that imply then it is a parallel casting angle to the contours. Or not. Or slightly off parallel to the contours of the lake bottom. Definitely all of the conventional tackle casts. Where directly towards the shoreline. In other words, bait retrieves going from shallow to deep. Maybe the casting angle at more parallel angle is it (or going slightly off-parallel too, from shallow to deep across the lake bottom contours). Maybe that is what it is. Especially if it was a fast, jerked retrieve of the baits that were flies. Meaning they would hover a lot. Even though one can do a fast retrieve using a fly and fly rod. It's not always easy to do that. And still work with something 'ten foot' in length from a kayak. Consider that a lot of anglers who are tall men. Casting from bass boats. Higher than the water. Can't operate well with top water. Using a rod that is too long. And that is with rods under eight foot length. I don't think that Guillermo was doing many 'snap' type jerk retrives. Using a fly rod of that length. And it was a soft action as you could see how it bowed in playing that bass.
If you are to do a top water, surface disturbance (what they refer to in fly fishing as poppers), retrieve on a fly rod. A soft action rod might not be the first choice either. My guess is, that rod action that Guillermo was using. Lent itself to a subtle type of retrieve. I go back to the initial point. A more static, suspended type of presentation (can you emulate a retrieve lure using fly fishing tackle, you can to a certain extent). Larry Dahlberg mentioned it to April Vokey. In their interview not long ago. Trying to make a fly rod work like a bait caster. Seems like a silly thing to do. And coming from an angler like Dahlberg who understands all systems of lure fishing out there. It has to be taken seriously. It is some combination of all of those. Water clarity, sky conditions, temperature, wind conditions, casting angles and retrieve. Some combination of all. That made such a dramatic difference. Between flies versus lures. And I can't really say what it was. To be honest. We've only started fly fishing for predatory species in Europe. In the last several years. A lot of it is still a very open book. We don't understand what is what (on the fly fishing tournament lakes such as Sheelin in Ireland, a famous trout lake). They are more bait fish like fly designs. That are creeping into tournament fishing there. And I presume on other lakes. The sport in other words is changing. Over on this side.
There is one other thing. That matters with fly fishing. It's the size of fly. You can change from quite small, to quite large. Very quickly, and the changes that it has (even in fishing over the same piece of water). Can matter enormously. It can be like night and day. You need not change anything. Except size of lure. From less than an inch. To up to ten or twelve. And every setting in between. Color, style and pattern matter less. That could be one of the areas of conventional tackle too. Where fly fishing still holds an advantage (Croppie competition anglers are expert in the lighter tackle on the conventional side). And judging by how many anglers come from that Croppie fishing background. And are successful when they move up to bass (to opposite to Kristine, who moved down from Musky and Pike to bass in terms of the lure size). I think that anglers who really understand smaller lures and sizes. Know something about bass fishing maybe. That others don't. And it's evidenced there in that catch. Of those large small mouth bass on the fly rod. Where as I mentioned, you can't really get a solid 'lateral line' type of reactionary bite. From a fly rod and fly. Like you would from a crank bait, spinner bait or top water plug even. You can't do it. Maybe it was just that. The fish just were after something that was smaller. Than what the conventional tackle could offer. And that is why 'water clarity' matters. You only have to look at the color of the water. At the boat ramp. It was like a swimming pool. That was the first indicator of what was to come. Shallow, flat water depths. Combined with that water clarity. And a light breeze. Is there anything on the conventional tackle angling side? That could replicate what the fly rod did? Other than a drop shot that is thrown horizontally up to shallower water depths? And I understand that is something that northern bass anglers will do.
New bodies of water old bodies of water, it really doesn’t matter to me. I just want to see fishing. Just cast and catch, of course I know every cast won’t be a catch but that is why it’s called fishing not catching!!!
