  • Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of 1987. Some creatives at MB sit around one day contemplating what to make for their next big hitting toy. One plucky young exec. suggests putting a game inside a cassette tape. The others laugh. 3 weeks later Flipsiders is launched. It's a game in a cassette tape. A GAME IN A CASSETTE TAPE (and I'm not talking Commodore 64 here)..... sigh

Wow, someone made a video about this game... Haha! I had this as a young boy and a few other games in the series as well. It was a real novelty back then to have a fun little board-game that was totally portable. (And yes, we had tiny magnetic chess and checkers sets too, but these were original designs!)
Sadly, my copy of this game was stolen in grade school by a miserable miscreant named Mark Hanes. (Yep, calling you out 30 years later!) He was regularly in trouble and getting bad grades and even had to attend special classes for being unable to read well. Looking back I can only imagine that if he wasn't just an evil little brat, he must have been abused at home.
I didn't even take the game into my class, left it in my coat pocket in the hallway where all the coat-racks were for all students, and I'm sure he used a pretended bathroom visit to wander down the hall and pilfer everything in every pocket while no teachers watched. When I complained about the theft, my teacher spotted him with the exact same article, but he had put a sticker on the back of it with his name written on it and claimed it was his all along. Coincidence and my word vs. his. He wasn't punished and I was made to look bad for accusing.

Nostalgia Nerd Ya, the actual mechanics and design were great. The board really did flip out and unfold in 3 segments and was magnetic, and you had that little compartment on the top with the game pieces and markers, and the whole concept of using the "cassette wheels" as a spinner instead of dice or something, it was great.
The late 80's and early 90's were a fun time of compact toy design. Lots of great miniature things like Micro Machines and the Polly Pockets and so on. The whole concept of being able to have a cheap, well-designed and fun non-electronic toy that you could take anywhere to play with your friends... brilliant stuff long before everyone had little cell phones or more pricey hand-held video games.
And ya, bloody school! But if you're smart enough, even bad experiences teach you something. You might not get the lesson until you've matured, but it's still important to learn.

That's a lot of space on that tape... almost 5 terabytes! And yeah, as you said, it was yellow for the benefit of those (including Mr. Nerd) who are at least somewhat color-blind, some of us are just luckier, I guess.

I bet these were originally prototyped to be for Jem and the Holograms games. Milton Bradley just put out board games for Jem in 1986 that included cassette tapes with music. The colors are very Jem and the pattern in the plastic is very similar to an unproduced Misfits doll Graphix. One of the Jem fashion assortments was called “Flip Side Fashions.”

Funny that this video hasn't gotten more attention. It's something a little different, but I certainly find a fair amount of charm in silly old toys like this. :')

You are completely wrong, this game was and is great. Simple concept, easy to figure out. I just Checkered Flag in my parents basement and I taught it to my son.
