Hey Stan, great segment. Many memories of earning Tot'n, and showing or demonstrating to the new patrol.

My fishin buddy has 2 sons that just recently joined the Scouts. As soon as this video popped up in my feed I had to send it to him.

That's awesome! I hope your buddy and his sons enjoy the video. It's great to see the next generation getting involved in the Scouts! YIS⚜

My units scouts like when teaching to ask the adults supervising if they missed anything. The scouts still do all the teaching. It also helps refresh their memory without embarrassing them. There was one campout I went n where I took over 3 hours sharpening it since I got bored and had nothing else better to do.

Oh, have you done a segment on JOTA or JOTI? Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet are big for the World Organization of the Scouting Movement. It's going on this weekend, Oct. 18-20.

This brings back memories. I remember doing that training way back in 1982 or around there!
I remember for some reason I had a Cub Scouts knife rather than standard issue. It was either a gift or I just thought it was built better at the time. It's even possible I still have the card somewhere.
The technical skills weren't that demanding, but the main thing they looked for was practicing the safety rules as a habit. I seem to remember one or two guys getting it revoked or denied because they were horsing around with a knife.
I don't remember them teaching the use of a splitting maul, and in hindsight that would have been helpful.

@@twindaddy_sh_mn1092 As many sweeping changes as there have been in scouting since I was a kid, or even the last decade, it's cool to see how some things have never changed. I don't think Tote N Chip was a new thing even back then. It's probably been around in some form or another going back 100 years.

@kenofken9458 I also appreciate that the core values of Scouting remain as the movement adapts to youth that live in a different world than the youth of decades ago. If you have a background in Scouting, might you be interested in becoming a Merit Badge Counselor?

@@twindaddy_sh_mn1092 Maybe I'll look into it. The truth of it is I've been out of scouting for 40 years or so and while I have some great memories of it, I was not the Eagle Scout by any means. As I remember, most of us got into it in sixth grade or whatever the young end was then, earned up through First Class or maybe Star and stuck with it until high school or shortly thereafter.

Hey Scouter Stan, great video on the totin chip I have another video idea for you, you should do a video about the fireman chip that's another skill you should talk about

Sounds good. I think we have that scheduled sometime in mid-November this year. It's a good suggestion and I'll mention you in the video. Keep the suggestions coming, I need 3 good ones otherwise Season 11 will be even shorter. YIS⚜

@@ScouterStan you should also do one about getting CPR Certified Because it's a very important skill you need but also it's required for scouts and scouters who want to do wilderness first aid which is also something you can talk about.

Thank you so much for the suggestion. Most of my videos are reviews of requirements and not the actual instructions. A video that is instructional like a CPR course needs to be put together by an authorizing authority like the Red Cross. I do mention it in the wilderness first aid video but don't go into the actual training for that skill. This is something that the individual scout or scouter should seek out the actual training and certification. That is a good scout skill. However, I'm not a certified instructor that can do the training video. Thank you so much for the suggestion and keep them coming. YIS⚜

By following safety rules, maintenance, and care practices, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience. Remember, safety should always be your top priority when working with sharp tools
