Scott Cooper is one of the best filmmakers working today who is highly underrated. Ive always said that Hostiles is one of the best westerns ever made, and ill stand by it. Stellar cast, great script, wonderful direction and cinematography, and a dark and emotional story.

Absolutely, I remember going to see it in theatres at the beginning of 2018 due to Bale and Cooper's involvement (big fan of 'Out of the Furnace') and thinking it was "good" but then the film ended up playing on my mind for days after and I couldn't stop thinking about it, especially Bale's performance, the soundtrack and certain scenes like the finale and the "I don't feel anything anymore" scene when you realise just how much his partner's PTSD has destroyed him.

I am so impressed how insightful your reviews are. I've been watching a lot of Siskel and Ebert episodes here on RUclips and the quality of your reviews is equal to theirs. I too love Hostiles but I doubt I could have said more than two or three sentences on why. Thank you for your work.

Stop making me remember that 2017 was so long ago.
But also, thanks for the recommendation! I had never heard of this one; I feel like the movie audiences were particularly unreceptive to these sorts of movies due to the political climate at the time and there's probably some fine filmmaking we collectively missed as a result.

A very accurate appreciation - of a superb movie. There seems to be a growing cluster of under appreciated modern films, that do very intelligent and moving things with the western genre. This is definitely one.

Wish I had seen HOSTILES in the theater. Have seen it on SHOWTIME several times, so you know nothing is edited and there are no brainless commercials interrupting this work of art. Terrific movie. Definitely a western of a different type. Terrific cast. Terrific acting. An issues-driven western.. The on-locale New Mexico/Colorado landscape is gorgeous as is the cinematography. What a shame that this film has been overlooked and ignored. This film IS a moder day classic.

I respect Christian Bale, and although not a huge fan per se, I love his portrayal/work in this film. Really a quiet struggle of duty and grief between characters from different backgrounds; each displaying integrity, dignity, and powerful perseverance. A treasure of an even-handed and pensive movie, with lovely cinematography, and the suspense and discoveries of a long journey. Rosamund amazing as always and Ben Foster in another role as wickedly demented wild man. Bale reading Roman history in the story's beginning brings to mind the Dylan lyric, "I get into trouble, and I hit the wall
No place to turn, no place at all
I pick a number between one and two
And ask myself, "What would Julius Caesar do?"

An Impressive movie but I kind of felt the native Americans in the film ended up being side characters and collateral damage along the main protagonists road to redemption. A familiar story.

It’s a fantastic modern western. Slow West. Old Henry. Lots of great modern under appreciated westerns.

Excellent film. I've watched it twice.
    Pike's performance is Oscar worthy
    Bale is exceptional as usual
The final scene is so touching when Bale makes his decision to accompany Pike's character and the young native

I've watched Hostiles several times. It's an excellent movie, although it does have a melancholy air about it. I agree with all your comments about it.

I don't know if we can call any film a "classic" unless it's at least 25 years old

I would suggest that you write to Sony Pictures Classics and ask them to change their name. I bet "instant classic" is irritating. I don't like that phrase either.

'Road to Perdition,' 'We Were Soldiers,' 'Gladiator,' 'Gran Torino,' 'Catch Me if You Can,' 'The Aviator,' 'Million Dollar Baby,' 'The Last Samurai,' 'The Departed,' 'Training Day,' 'What Lies Beneath,' 'Paterson,' 'Top Gun Maverick,' 'Hostiles,' 'Batman Begins,' 'The Count of Monte Cristo,' 'Chocolat,' 'Phantom Thread,' 'Cinderella Man,' 'LOTR' and 'Casino Royale' I consider all classics and all are less than 25 years old.

      When does music become classical?

I just watched it but I’m not sure if I love it. It has all the things I love about westerns but is still a little flat I feel. I’ll have to watch it again, this time on a real big screen.
