This was the play where Shannon Sharpe was saying on his podcast that this play prompted the NFL to change rules to better protect the quarterbacks…Boomer even stated that this was the hardest he ever sustained during his career
Bruce Smith was a scary man, loved watching him play growing up. The game really has changed. Watching back then almost every game a poor wide receiver would get his head taken off, and the quarter backs would take brutal hits.
I remember this hit being the first time people started thinking about the dangers of concussions and that they might be more than just "getting your bell rung."
At first glance, it doesn't look much different than many hard hits we see today (2023), but Bruce got Boomer on the side of his face with his helmet. Boomer had to sit out 5 games in what was one of the earliest examples of concussion protocol. To this day he has no memory of the hit. He had no idea Bruce was there.

Watch is frame by frame, .it's a lot closer to being onsides than you think... in fact, I think Bruce was onsides. He comes out of his stance before the ball was snapped, the ball is snapped by the time Smith crosses the LOS, but I think he is reacting to the LT slightly leaning back.
Bruce Smith didn’t lead with his helmet, his helmet was to the side and did hit Boomer in the head but didn’t lead with his helmet. Was a normal tackle
I like how Boomer is laying on the turf and they keep showing different angles of the hit without knowing if he's seriously hurt. I hate to admit I enjoyed watching all the different angles though.
What rock do you live under? Ever hear of things like the Outland Trophy or AFC Championship 4 years in a row? Or NFL Comeback Player of the Year? What have you won?
There was actually a false start on the play, the ref blew it dead but the crowd was so loud most players did not hear it. You can see the left guard rock back slightly before the ball was snapped.
Exactly. The tackle itself was clean, even by today's standards. I think the real damage is the way that Esiason landed, on his shoulder, and on that old nasty Astroturf. That shit had no give to it at all. Just a carpet on cement.
This was Rich Kotite coached team. How in the world to you lead you blocking scheme away from Bruce Smith? And no, Bruce was not called offsides, they called a false start on the Jets.
Boomer gets roasted about this on a monthly basis here in NYC on his talk radio morning show "Boomer & Gio"...they play the audio and the guys joke and laugh about it...he's a good sport about it. The Leonard Marshall blindside hit on Joe Montana in the 1990 NFC Title game is just as brutal. Montana looks like he saw a ghost or woke up from a year long coma when he finally walks off the field. Football back in the day was no joke. QB's & Receivers are protected now and rightfully so.
Bruce Smith was just too damn fast and strong, even by today's standards. Looked like he killed Boomer, but blame your offensive tackle for fucking up the play. Bruce was doing what any player in his position would've done, he didn't lower his head as to strike with the helmet; otherwise, you would not see Boomer on television today in decent health.
@@richardlorith6936 But they never had and answer for Thurman Thomas....the Dolphin slayer. Collinsworthless, Bruce wasn't off sides. Watch the left tackle rock back in his stance right before the snap. Bruce doesn't go on the tackle movement, he went the EXACT moment the ball was snapped.

I’m glad Bruce Smith was able to hold up a bit on that hit so he, Bruce Smith, didn’t suffer long term stress and anxiety from this hit. Hitting someone like this can cause that. I’m also glad that Boomer was only, according to Marv Albert, “shaken up”
*Bruce Smith makes a clean, well time sack on the quarterback* *Cris Collinsworth the whole time* "tHaT's A dIrTy HiT!!!! fInE tHaT mAn!!!" Twenty years later & the dude STILL doesn't have a clue.
Just watched an interview boomer did with Bruce Smith. Boomer says he doesnt even remember this game or even after the game for some time. Bruce said that's the first time he hit someone that hard. Colinsworth is ahead of his time when he said leading with the head should be illegal
Watch that again, Bruce has his head and his shoulder going into Boomer. Bruce's head never stops or jolts upon contact which means his helmet was up over Boomers shoulder pad while Bruce's shoulder hits Boomer in the upper chest/shoulder. You can see this by Boomers head going downward as opposed to up or straight back if he was hit in the helmet. Now, saying that, I don't think you said Bruce did that, but it kind of comes across that way.
Chris is annoying in the Commentary and that type of Mentality chipped away slowly but Deliberately and led to what you have in 2021 where the Defensive Line has to count to 5 and complete a intricate series of Dance moves before making any sudden movements in the Direction of the Quarterback , and also the Dance moves have to be judged and can incur Penalties when ever they feel like throwing a Flag for whatever reason
I just heard about this on the morning show. on WFAN the fan from Boomer himself, had to check it out. I totally forgot about this. You could really see the concern on Bruce Smith's face. What a stand up guy. I felt bad for Bruce. Thank God Boomer was okay.

@Andrew Furrer clean play from a great player and great man off the field.

Because he did. To this day. He still says it was the most violent play of his career.
I love how 26 years later, Bills fans STILL can't stand Cris Collinsworth's bias analysis.
Where is the bias? The refs screwed up.
What did he say wrong??
He’s brutal!
Bruce’s helmet was to the side. He didn’t initiate the hit with the helmet.
He sounded ridiculous on this play...the lineman on the Jets flinched so Smith thought the ball was snapped

Even in the 90s Collinsworth hated the Bills! Wow!
well he did play with boomer for a while and they're friends..
He has been brutal against the Bills his entire career.
You’re such a B! Collinsworth is being a good commentator. Calling it as it is.
So? The Bills suck!
Collinsworth is a loser. Sucked as a WR and worse as an announcer.

I’m surprised Collingsworth has been around this long.
Classy moment from Bruce Smith. He genuinely looked concerned, and Bills-Jets is a tough rivalry.
Bruce Smith was a scary man, loved watching him play growing up. The game really has changed. Watching back then almost every game a poor wide receiver would get his head taken off, and the quarter backs would take brutal hits.

I can't believe Boomer Esiason didn't lose possession of that ball.
