  • This morning our 2023 Year 9 students, new students at other year levels and whānau were welcomed to Palmerston North Boys’ High School with a Pōwhiri.
In his speech the Rector, Mr. Bovey, shared this whakataukī: ‘Kotahi te kōhao o te ngira e kuhuna ai te miro mā, te miro pango, te miro whero’, which translates to ‘There is but one single eye of the needle through which the white, black and red threads must pass’, explaining that although our young men come from diverse backgrounds they are now part of the same community, the school being the eye of the needle through which they all will pass.
We wish all of our young men all the best for a positive school year and encourage them to take on both the challenges and opportunities that are presented to them.

We have few efforts to initiate boys into men in America. Farming, sports, military all help to make that transition. I think this school is extraordinary. They are making that transition by how they teach and what they learn. Having a boys only high school also makes a difference. They all speak a common language and understand each other mostly without conflict. There was nearly a thousand students attending and another hundred getting ready to attend. The challenge by the headmaster and the school’s Hakka were awesome. The burden as a new student is upon you, not the school. What a great message for these new students.
