Aha, so THAT is HOW a mature musician plays this work without undue drama in the introduction played as an improvisation and the allegro part with impeccable voicing and speed! This must be the GOLD standard that others can only aspire and dream about.
@beethovenbd exactly, some people see Cziffra as a brilliant technical pianist icon, but we forgot he was a very sensible musician as this record justified it.
Excelente concertista.
Mendelssohn is a very talented musician, although his works are not so dramatic like those of Chopin, Liszt, Schumann or Beethoven, since he had an easy life and not so many troubles as those indicated. I love this piece, and also his songs without words and his Concerto No. 1, which is really virtuosic for any pianist.
On the contrary, clarifying the musical line above all the other competing notes is quite an accomplishment. He also performs the miracle of revealing the forest through the thick trees and bushes of 16th notes in the Rondo section.
How can you say "mechanical" when there was such tasteful phrasing together with the well considered rubatos? The mistake that Russians make (as far as I could tell) is that Mendelssohn and Grieg should be played aggressively. Not at all.
Don't you think this sounds just a bit fast at the adante in the beginning? Everything else was wonderful! Just wasn't sure about the beginning, but I guess he can play however he likes since he's so good.
Just absurd to play the presto as fast as he does. Yes it's clean and articulate, but it's also just thrown away. He's playing is technically brilliant but just too fast
this great man is way beyond human on a musical level. Always so unique, original, freaky, disturbing, enlightening, other worldly
Rest in peace Grande Maestro George Cziffra ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉Giuseppe Perego Monza 16.2.1962 Grazie
It is indeed a thrill to discover this incredible pianist late in my life
Amazing! How clear and with passion, like Cziffra, for me he is one of the biggest pianists!
Love his interpretation of the fast part.
I'm playing this piece in Carnegie Hall on December 21!!!!!!
Yes, but in what YEAR??...(ROFL)
Please tell me you recorded your performance.
Sorry I missed it
If you listen to Cziffra's interpretation, you will lose hope in playing the same piece. HE PLAYS IT TOO WONDERFULLY!!
Wow, one of the very very few performances for this piece without any pedal but still having the perfect touch and musicality. Amazing!!!!!
Jenny Gao I’m hearing pedal here, but he uses it masterfully, never saturating the piece with it.
Combines poetry and virtuosity in equal measuure.

Vive ce morceau ! =)
Extraordinary techique, extraordinary interpretation
Excellent performance! Cziffra's playing is very exciting and note perfect.
Cziffra I miss you...and the other Piano Legends too :(
Nice pedals in the presto, never heard such an interpretation of this piece.
Transcendental!
I think the presto is played very well and he brings out the melody very well.
Briliant Performance !One of the best Rondo I ever heard , u can’t compare this virtuoso , and unique sound with anybody .
Have listened to many great pianists playing this piece. This one is outstanding!

So this is how it should be played.... melodic lines one never knew existed.... and what clarity and finesse!
Superb performance!
This is very beautiful. I almost shed a tear. Not too fast, thankfully.
What??
by far the best version i think
Fantasztikus!!!

Very good summary about Mendelssohn. I heard the concerto no 1 the other day and it is indeed like a rocket, very intimidating for any pianist.
He wrote many serious and solemn dramatic pieces, or sections of. Have you heard the oratorios? The organ sonatas? The many lieder?
It was Cziffra, and the others.
excellent performance:D
a prove that this man was more then just "virtuosic ramblings" as some would like to say.
charme romantique. merveilleux
Cziffra has his place alongside the greatest. Technical brilliance is equal to musical interpretation unless you are a snob..
"Snob beats slob"...(ROFL)
On the contrary, clarifying the musical line above all the other competing notes is quite an accomplishment. He also performs the miracle of revealing the forest through the thick trees and bushes of 16th notes in the Rondo section.
I do like his violin concerto and his Italian Symphony also !!!!!!
vraiment tres beau
amazing of great art of piano, colours and magic virtuosity
Incredible! this man does not belong to this planet.
With all respect, the presto is
so mechanical, fast, and nearly unrecognizable
Sooooooooooo Amazing!!
wow!!
that is so......good!!
Cziffra's fingernail clippings are more worthy of the piano than I ever will be. :(
Me too. I'm in awe.
@Chakiejan Are you playing in the Winner's Recital for the American Protege Romantic Music Competition?
Dear Jenny, Cziffra does use pedal throughout.
The beginning is great.
Thank you for sharing.
Is there any chance of someone telling me on what recording this particular performance is?
Wow incredible
hey.. im 11, im learning it, and i might get better in the future. im stuck on the part where it is very fast at 3:20!!!
wanderful!!
good!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think he will be reading your plea for less rubato.
He's dead
delizioso
Check out Salhernor's version :) plus, it's an actual version.
so is the middle...and the end =)
Prefinjena izvedba Mendelsona
clean...nuff sed
4:42 HOLY FUCK
How can you say "mechanical" when there was such tasteful phrasing together with the well considered rubatos? The mistake that Russians make (as far as I could tell) is that Mendelssohn and Grieg should be played aggressively. Not at all.
Or even Liszt. I was listening to Berman play transcendental etudes and I thought his sound was brutal-- far too heavy, and even unpleasant
when was this performed/recorded?
cool
He plays it very fast !
Arrau also plays this beautifully, Too bad the sound quality isn't as nice as this. Definitely going in my favourites.
2:23 sounds like liszt gnomenreigen
I don't like the Adagio at the beginning, but I appreciate his idea and its always pleasing to listen to different way to interprete
@MALBGM
passionate piano love? haha :)
How's that fanfic coming along?
why are people only interested in the Presto?
personally i think the most beautiful part is the Andante.
this is pretty pimp
This is how I always imagined it
So am I! ...I don't need your name for security, just tell me what you won and I'll check it. I won second place in the Junior category, I live in NY.

who would say that?
thx god my opinion counts still more for me as otherones...!
Don't you think this sounds just a bit fast at the adante in the beginning? Everything else was wonderful! Just wasn't sure about the beginning, but I guess he can play however he likes since he's so good.
@mybotteghino wOnderful yes...
2:23
A special, slightly creepy and peculiar rendition.
The piece has some cheesy sections, doesn't it? But I love the main theme of the rondo, so brilliant!
Not "cheesy", just fundamental. Lots of kids start out on this...
CLASSICALFAN100 ...and it’s the hardest piece in my repertoire.
Technically, yes, but also musically. Ti create an atmosphere and phrases in both sections (especially Presto) as things go by so quickly
207265
the andante is horrifically fast
Reid Black An andante it's not meant to be slow.
The tempo is too unpredictable to me...
Just absurd to play the presto as fast as he does. Yes it's clean and articulate, but it's also just thrown away. He's playing is technically brilliant but just too fast
I guess he played it prestissimo. ?
troppo veloce
