Today I am revisiting a subject called Motif #1 - which is basically a lobster shack in the middle of the harbor at Rockport Ma. It is a famous subject - you have only to google the line motif #1 Rockport to see a variety of paintings, and photos of this icon. It has been sort of a rite of passage to aspiring and accomplished artists in the Cape Ann region. Unfortunately like many such icons it has been over done. Like a great song that sees too much airplay it looses some of its appeal.
Regardless I am using the motif #1 to bring up some ideas of using design to find a more interesting view and to play with the color to create luminosity and glow. - even in the shadows.

Thanks so much, Doug! I too start from a point of tightness and with immersion I begin to loosen up,!
Lovely
Thank you
i like the way youre making a bigger painting, keep on making them like that :)
Many thanks - I keep trying new and different approaches, sometimes large, sometimes small, but I try to always have a big idea!
The subject painted here is very close to were I live and I’ve seen it often. My understanding is that it is called Motif #1 because it has been done so many times. That is one of the reasons it is an interesting challenge. An artist could be forgiven for wondering if it is even possible to create something new from a subject that has been painted so many times. Thank you Gary for showing us that it is possible.
Thanks for your kind remarks, Timothy, I too look for a new and unique way to express the common subject
This is one of your best, Gary. Always enjoy your videos So much to learn of values, color and design from you. Thank you!! Darrel
