In Sledge's memoir "China Marine" it explains that the company he was in actually got sent to a completely new war in China between the Nationalists and the Communist party. His story there could easily have been its own miniseries, because they wound up having to now work beside the Japanese army while being integrated into the Chinese culture. He learned Chinese (sort of), joined a Chinese intellectual group including a missionary priest, and gained a Chinese name that literally translated to "golden scholar".
Read the memoir, it's crazy interesting and I'm sad that they couldn't go into it here.

Apparently Snafu just...didn't want to bother Sledge sleeping there. No one really seemed to be waiting for Snafu as he got home. Maybe just felt like he didn't want to be a bother to Sledge.
They do reunite though, after Sledge publishes his book "With the Old Breed" in the 1980s, and Snafu recognizes it as his old friend. They get back in contact, and stay in contact to the end of their days.

The cabbie didn’t accept Leckie’s money because he knows that the Marines didn’t have as much of a break from combat.

You... Have given me much joy watching your reactions and comments through this series. I am a retired Marine Gunny with 3 combat tours and the son of Marine WWII veteran that lived through the hell in the Pacific.

It's not just that it's difficult to say goodbye, but its the inevitability of seperation forever. It's the same as when you leave university. Everyone's in the same situation, and everyone understands, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. There's no point stretching it out or landing all the pressure on the last person because it'll be weird.

Oh another book is Islands of the Damn by R.V. Burgin he covers much of the same things as the other books but from his point of view and also explains what took so long for Florence to come to America. Basically as just his fiancé she was at the bottom of the list to come the the US wives and women with children of service men came first.

That last drink when the Lt. threw him the bottle was Johnny Walker Red, a fine drink.

Try Generation kill out for a next watch, it's similar to the Pacific and BOB for it being a military show but has a much lighter tone throughout, a good palate cleanser I would say.

I know its been said but you should really read sledge's memoir. I've read a lot off accounts of the pacific war and sledge is by far the best. Its intense, its graphic and it is very very sad.
