Tech billionaire suddenly decides watches are cool to impress his new cool mates. Billionaire buys expensive watches. What a journey that man has been on.
I cannot think of a bigger waste of quality pieces. He's buying Journes and DBs like new money buys RMs, APs and PPs. He hasn't spent enough time learning and losing and regretting watch buys and sales to know if he loves these watches. He owns and puts miles on these iconic pieces without the experience to know whether he actually likes them - those watches are in a home that adopts pets for holidays then runs serious risk of giving them back to the shelter.
@@josiah566Pretty sure he has someone picking out all the watch he picked up. He's infamous as the guy who dressed simply to not waste time thinking what shirt to wear for the day.
@ I’m sure he does - and while it might be educational to have someone advise and guide, it still isn’t enough time to internalize it beyond “my advisor said this was super cool”. I’m sure his appreciation and knowledge is growing, but in my experience it takes time to develop perspective to enjoy pieces like this. I like FP Journe as much as the next guy, but it took me a while to really learn and internalize just how special of a brand and how special Francois is as a brand leader and watchmaker. That kind of learning doesn’t happen over night ( though kudos if Mark doesn’t backtrack on his tastes - that’s the only scenario I feel these purchases would be worth it) In contrast, I’ve bought and sold most of my pieces in the early days of collecting - that’s when most of the trial and errors early learning and early regrets usually come because one is still learning what really actually speaks to them, and what certain terms or complications or features really mean both practically and in terms of what I want.
@@enkryptron who wouldn’t be?? Haha especially of someone who can start with a good advisor and that kind of budget. It smoothes out his learning curve but he is still learning.
If movements make the watch expensive why are pocket watches from the 1800s-1930s so inexpensive? Even Patek Philippe and well known watch maker pocket watches don’t hold good value. They have the same hand finished high complication movements. They just don’t have a strap to go on the wrist and people don’t use pocket watches so demand is lower. Movement DOES not make the watch expensive. Marketing does.
True. However movement DOES set a base price of a watch in the RETAIL market. Everything else (like marketing, demand, vintage factor, etc) influences the secondary market.
How can you say don’t use the argument demand when that’s one of if not the biggest factor 🤷♂️😂 People buy based on brand, model, appearance and who they see wearing it/how much “clout” it has in public. Then you have other factors like resale value, movement, features etc. demand is as important as anything else
Yeah sorry Nico he’s right, not exactly hating on it, some of the IFL stuff is cool, but so are some of the iced out watches, the main point is, don’t pay full price, let someone else waste the money and then buy it cheap
Not only are the IFL watches made in the factory or atleast overseen by the factory but they also can have the dial changed and be normal again. If you remove the diamonds from an iced out watch youre left with a golf ball that weighs probably half of what its supposed to... And if its made from precious metals thats kinda a big deal
@@turbocateyeS475 there are plenty of watches that get diamonds that can be changed back to normal, a lot of them just need the original bezel and dial put back on, they aren’t all drilled. But that aside, these custom modifications kill the resale value of the watch just like a bussed down. You think someone wants graffiti on their dial, or the other stupid pictures they put on there?
What would be a good next step up watch for my small, basic collection? - Casio G Shock 'casioak' - Rotary Skeleton Automatic - Tissot PRX Woukd like to add something better than the Tissot without breaking the bank.
As a machinist and someone who regularly works with aluminum, making a movement out of aluminum would be a nightmare to keep it in tolerance. Definitely takes a “crazy” person to make that watch!
Making contact with financial advisors like Elizabeth Regina Nelson, who can assist you in restructuring your portfolio, would be a very creative option. Personal financial management will be crucial for navigating the next difficult times.
Wow 😲 Elizabeth Regina Nelson has really set the standard for others to follow, we love her here in the Uk 🇬🇧 as she has been really helpful and changed lots of life's.
Unfortunately, not all of us were financially literate early. I was 35 when I finally educated myself and started taking steps. I went from $176,000 in debt with zero savings or retirement to now, 2 years later, fully debt-free and over $1000,000 net worth. I know that doesn't SOUND like a lot, but I'm incredibly proud of it. Now I'm fast-tracking my wealth building (investing $400,000 annually) and don't owe a dime to anyone. It's a good feeling!
So Anant Ambani and Virat Kohli buying famous pieces is hype jumping but Zuck buying the brand new Patek is insane watch collection worthy? Biased much?
Hey Nico, what's the difference between drilling holes in a watch to put in diamonds and painting the dial? I'm genuinely asking. The watch is ruined in both cases. At least imo.
Its stock if its sold through IFL or any of the companies they own or partner with. And it isnt ruined because the dial can be swapped. If someone iced out just a dial then it isnt forever ruined either, if they used a factory dial. But if youve ever seen a iced out watch before the diamonds were set youd see what ruined actually means. Half the weight of the watch is gone because they drilled hundreds of holes all over it... Thats a big deal if its made out of precious metals. Its also a big deal if you ever want to resell it. And it usually has aftermarket parts on it. Yes the movement may still be factory and able to be put in a different case but no one is selling an iced out watch for the price of just the movement. Also why ask a question, say youre genuinely curious, and then argue with the person when they give you a genuine and honest answer.
So, here’s how you become a Watch Collector when you are a Billionaire (who has never showed any interest in watches before): (1) pay a consultant who knows about watches to tell you what you should should be wearing; (2) buy (with your infinite wealth) those watches; and (3) wait for RUclipsrs to inevitably cream themselves 💦. You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy watches.
