Somerset is a bustling area located within the Orchard Road shopping district in Singapore. The name "Somerset" is derived from Somerset Road, which runs parallel to the famous Orchard Road. The history of Somerset is closely linked to the development and transformation of Orchard Road from a rural, plantation-covered area to a modern shopping and entertainment destination.
In the early 19th century, the land that now constitutes Somerset and the Orchard Road area was covered in nutmeg plantations and fruit orchards. The area was named "Orchard Road" after these plantations. However, by the mid-19th century, the nutmeg crop failed due to disease, and the plantations eventually gave way to residential development.
In the early 20th century, the Somerset area began to transform as more residential estates, schools, and religious institutions were established. The region slowly emerged as a commercial and entertainment hub in the mid-20th century, with cinemas, hotels, and shopping centers being built along Orchard Road.
The name "Somerset" is believed to be linked to the British presence in Singapore during the colonial era. Some sources suggest that Somerset Road was named after Lord Arthur Charles Somerset, an officer in the British army who was stationed in Singapore in the 19th century. Others believe that the road was named after William Somerset Maugham, a famous English playwright and novelist who spent time in the Malay Peninsula, including Singapore, in the 1930s.
In the late 20th century and early 21st century, Somerset continued to grow and develop as a commercial and entertainment hub. Shopping malls like 313@Somerset, Orchard Central, and Orchard Gateway were built, along with the Somerset MRT station, which improved accessibility and further boosted the area's popularity. Today, Somerset is a vibrant and bustling part of the Orchard Road shopping district, attracting both locals and tourists with its shopping, dining, and entertainment options.

hi I will be at singapore around 11pm from changi airport what is the best way to get to somerset aside from taking a taxi/grab because my hotel is located near somerset mrt station and as far as I know mrt is already close by that time
